The preview of The Chongqing Major 2019

Lord Matus
The preview of The Chongqing Major 2019

The Chongqing Major 2019 will be hosted in China with the prize pool in the sum of $1,000,000 and 15,000 DPC points on January 19-27. We will make a brief analysis of teams and will tell about their chances to win the tournament.

The format

Initially, all participants have passed regional qualifiers for The Chongqing Major 2019 and only EHOME has got to the tournament due to the victory at The Bucharest Minor 2019. Totally, 16 teams, which have been distributed in four groups, will play at the competition:

Group А

Virtus.Pro
TNC Predator
Chaos
EHOME

Group В

Team Secret
PSG.LGD
Forward Gaming
Thunder Predator

Group С

Team Liquid
Vici Gaming
The Pango
J.Storm

Group D

Evil Geniuses
Fnatic
Alliance
Team Aster

The group stage will be carried out in the GSL format with bo3 matches. The top two teams from each quartet will advance to the upper part of the playoff bracket, while two participants from each group, which have shown the worst results, will start their way from the lower part of the bracket.

In its turn, the playoff is a double-elimination bracket. Teams will play bo1 matches in the first round of the lower matches and all further matches, except the grand final, will be hosted in a bo3 format. The final match will be carried out between the finalists in a bo5 match.

The prize pool

The championship has received a “Major” status and this means that the prize pool will amount $1,000,000 and 15,000 Dota Pro Circuit points, which are required to go to The International 2019 directly.

The distribution of the prize pool:

1st place: $350,000 + 4,950 DPC points
2nd place: $170,000 + 3,000 DPC points
3rd place: $100,000 + 2,100 DPC points
4th place: $80,000 + 1,350 DPC points
5th-6th place: $60,000 + 900 DPC points
7th-8th place: $40,000 + 450 DPC points
9th-12th place: $15,000 + 150 DPC points
13th-16th place: $10,000 + 75 DPC points

The importance of the championship

The competition is incredibly important for any Dota 2 team because the tournament has a “Major” status by Valve. 4,950 DPC points are given for the victory at the competition, which guarantee a team advancement to The International 2019, so rosters will do their best.

The organization of the competition

The companies SLTV and ImbaTV, which have been in their business for a while, work on the organizing of the tournament. Each of the operators has more than 20 large and small hosted Dota 2 events, including championships, which are a part of the rating system. If SLTV can boast of hosting events with a “Minor” status, ImbaTV has experience of hosting such large tournaments as The Bucharest Major and The Kuala Lumpur Major, so there is no doubt about the quality of organizing.

The teams’ chances

Virtus.Pro — the odds on the victory: 5

“The Bears” are coming to the championship as one of the favorites because they are the reigning champions of the tournament in the “Major” series. The team has been the strongest at The Kuala Lumpur Major 2018. The players haven’t changed after the triumph and the guys have come to the event as the full roster, so it’s worth to expect a good game by them. However, we would not hurry to bet on their victory at the competition because Solo and the company have already guaranteed themselves a spot at The International 2019 and are unlikely to show their maximum and the CEO of Virtus.Pro has said in an interview that the guys have a goal to come to the most expected competition of the year in their best shape and the rest of championships doesn’t have a special value.

Team Secret — the odds on the victory: 5

The guys from team Secret have been on the top for a long time since the beginning of the season. Initially, the team didn’t find equals at PVP Esports Championship and ESL One Hamburg 2018 and was on the brink of triumph at The Kuala Lumpur Major 2019. Puppey and the company haven’t been seen on the professional stage for more than a month, however, we are fully sure that the roster will reach the top four. Secret want to win The Chongqing Major 2019 for sure, a problem in Team Liquid and a possible absence of motivation in Virtus.Pro makes Team Secret the main favorite to win, in our view.

PSG.LGD — the odds on the victory: 6

PSG.LGD failed the start of the season frankly because the 3rd-4th place at PVP Esports Championship and also the 5th-6th place at MegaFon Winter Clash is not what viewers expected from the vice-champions of The International 2018. The fact that the advancement to The Chongqing Major 2019 was tough for PSG.LGD (the team placed 3rd at the qualifiers in China) reflects some problems inside the roster. It’s worth also to remind that Fy and the company have looked well at MegaFon Winter Clash, even despite the loss to Natus Vincere in the losers’ final.

Team Liquid — the odds on the victory: 7

Team Liquid was probably the main favorite of the upcoming championship after a great performance at MegaFon Winter Clash where MinD_Control and his teammates had beaten Natus Vincere in the grand final without an effort and become the champions. The roster is hungry for victories because Liquid hasn’t played at large championships since the end of The International 2018 and we don’t consider MegaFon because, despite a good list of participants, Liquid hadn’t played in full force, about what they said in their interviews openly. Everything would be good if the replacement didn’t happen a couple of days before the beginning of the competition. Shadow, who is listed in Eclipse as inactive, will play for the Europeans instead of Miracle~. Team Liquid remain themselves even with a stand-in and they can enter the top six, however, we don’t see them as finalists and the chance to place first in the standings seems to be misty at all.

Vici Gaming — the odds on the victory: 7

The guys from Vici Gaming have a good start of the season and they managed to hold the second place at ESL One Hamburg 2018 and the 7th-8th place at The Kuala Lumpur Major over the past months and the team became a leader in its region after the release of the patch 7.20 and became the strongest at 2018 Sanya DOTA2 New-Stars Play and Dota2 Professional League Season 6 (2018 S2). In our opinion, the Chinese team has the biggest chance to win the competition because the team has a few decent competitors but something is wrong with each of them. Virtus.Pro, for example, is unlikely to play in full force, Team Liquid has come with a stand-in. With regard to PSG.LGD, they are in the same region with Vici Gaming, so they often play against each other. Ori with his team knows how to play well against this Chinese opponent. Team Secret and ViCi have a rich history with equal matches and results. As a result, we see that there are all circumstances for the victory of Vici Gaming at the tournament and everything will depend on them. We think that they will enter the top three, at least.

Evil Geniuses — the odds on the victory: 11

SumaiL and the company have been participating with an unstable success since the very beginning of the season: the 5th-6th place at ESL One Hamburg 2018 changed to “the bronze” at The Kuala Lumpur Major 2018 and the guys placed third at the qualifiers for the competition, having lost to Forward Gaming and J.Storm. The absence of gaming practice might play a bad joke with Evil Geniuses because the roster took part in its last official match two months ago and no one knows their current gaming shape. Knowing Evil Geniuses, we can state that they might appear from nowhere again and reach the top 4 due to their rich experience and individual skill.

EHOME — the odds on the victory: 11

Bookmakers offer odds on the victory of EHOME at the tournament in the sum of 11 and we think that it’s too high because as the practice has shown, the champion of the tournament in the “Minor” series can’t show something at the Major due to tiredness and an absence of new strategies. Due to this, it will be easy for the rest of the teams to prepare for the match against y’ and his teammates. In general, EHOME is a strong enough team, which has managed to hold its place in the Chinese region, however, the guys are not ready to perform on the tier-1 level yet.

Fnatic — the odds on the victory: 13

Fnatic showed themselves well in autumn and managed to become the best team in Southeast Asia over the time. The team has already achieved the second place at PVP Esports Championship and the 7th-8th place at The Kuala Lumpur Major 2018. Fnatic hasn’t changed its roster, so they are unlikely to lose their gaming shape. This means that they can repeat the success of the last Major.

Team Aster — the odds on the victory: 21

Team Aster have proved themselves in the Chinese region and found an approach to the top teams in the division, which is reflected by the first place at the qualifiers for the Major. Sylar and the company have left behind such opponents as Vici Gaming, PSG.LGD, EHOME, and others. However, the roster’s things are not so good at the international arena. Team Aster took part in ESL One Hamburg 2018 and The Kuala Lumpur Major but they were unable to meet the expectations of fans. The roster is strong for sure and can create problems for the best teams at the tournament but we can’t relate them to the top six.

Forward Gaming — the odds on the victory: 21

The guys from Forward Gaming have recently been showing a very bad Dota. The team has taken part in ESL One Hamburg 2018, The Kuala Lumpur Major, MegaFon Winter Clash, WePlay! Dota 2 Winter Madness, LOOT.BET Winter Masters since the moment of transfer under the tag of the organization and they haven’t been able to place higher than 5th-6th there. At the beginning of the year, the roster looked very bad but it’s worth to make a favor due to New Year holidays and the guys had the whole month to prepare before The Chongqing Major 2019.

The Pango — the odds on the victory: 26

Ghostik and the company have a status of the second team in CIS in the terms of power due to getting to the final of Maincast Autumn Brawl and I Can't Believe It's Not Summit! and also the 3rd-4th place at WePlay! Dota 2 Winter Madness. The team would be able to create problems even to the strongest roster if not the only issue - Zayac was unable to go to China due to visa issues and his place would be held by KingR. It can’t be said that Rinat is a bad stand-in but the team synergy will not be on the same level. Now, The Pango looks like the team, which will not be able to place higher than 12th.

TNC Predator — the odds on the victory: 26

TNC Predator passes the draft stage well, has great moves on the map and a good synergy but they still lack something. The team can’t steal the title of the best team in Southeast Asia from Fnatic and the guys held the 5th-6th place at the last tournament in the “Major” series, having lost to NiP with a stand-in. It’s also worth to notice that Armel and the company have a strong group and it will be a tough goal to advance to the upper bracket and they will not have a right to make a mistake in the lower bracket. As a result, the team will be able to enter the top six if only they have a successful performance in the group but such top teams as PSG.LGD, Vici Gaming, Secret, Liquid, VP, and some others will not probably allow them to get there.

Alliance — the odds on the victory: 33

The Swedish team has proved itself as a strong European team, which have a lot to work on to reach the tier-1 level. The roster holds the first place at various online tournaments like LOOT.BET Winter Masters, MegaFon Champions League Season 2, I Can't Believe It's Not Summit! but when it comes to large LAN tournaments, it’s difficult to notice the roster. Alliance competed in ESL One Hamburg 2018 и The Kuala Lumpur Major but they were not able to place higher than 9th place at both of them. Considering Boxi and the company’s recent performance, we are sure that the team will not be eliminated in the first round but getting to the top eight will be big luck for Alliance.

J.Storm — the odds on the victory: 34

J.Storm had invited Fear to its ranks and the team hasn’t played an official match since his transfer, so it’s very difficult to talk about their current gaming shape. During the old patch, Moo and the company managed to place second at World Showdown of Esports #1 and 9th-12th at The Kuala Lumpur Major, which can be considered a satisfying result for the tier-2 team from North America. Bookmakers don’t believe in the team too and offer odds on their victory, which are equal to 34. We fully agree with them because any performance, which doesn’t finish with the 13th-16th place, can be called successful for J.Storm.

Chaos (ex-paiN Gaming) — the odds on the victory: 34

The guys from paiN Gaming signed the contract with Chaos Esports Club before the start of the tournament, so have a higher motivation because no one wants to fail the first tournament under the new tag. By the way, despite the team failed the performance at The Kuala Lumpur Major 2018 but entered the top four at ESL One Hamburg 2018. In our opinion, the team can be called “a dark horse”, which will create a couple of small sensations but they are very far from reaching the top three or all the more victory.

Thunder Predator — the odds on the victory: 101

Thunder Predator is not the best team even in South America and the region is considered to be the weakest on the professional Dota 2 scene. The team hadn’t visited large tournaments before and the roster replaced a player at the beginning of January. To understand the team’s power better, we remind you that Thunder Predator managed to earn only $2,000 over the whole autumn season, which is incredibly little by the esports standards. The weakness of the region, the instability of the players in South America and the absence of the experience of playing at large LAN tournaments make Thunder Predator the main underdog of the competition, which is unlikely to win one series, at least.
