Valve has officially announced that the next Dota 2 world championship — The International 2026 — will take place in Shanghai, China. The tournament is scheduled for August 2026 and is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated events in esports.

This will be the second return of The International to Shanghai. The last time the city hosted the event was in 2019, when the legendary team OG claimed their second consecutive championship title.

The announcement of the venue was made during the final stage of The International 2025. Valve’s co-founder, Gabe Newell, addressed fans in a video message, emphasizing the symbolic significance of this choice.

The decision to bring TI back to Shanghai is closely tied to the strong performances of Chinese teams on the global stage. In 2025, one of the local squads, Xtreme Gaming, reached the grand final, further proving the strength of the region’s competitive scene.

Shanghai has long been recognized as a major esports hub in Asia. With its advanced infrastructure and extensive experience in hosting large-scale international tournaments, the city was a natural choice for Valve.

The return of The International to China highlights the growing influence of the Asian region in global esports and promises fans an unforgettable spectacle in 2026.
