IEM Rio 2026: Can Vitality Complete the Grand Slam?

Rio de Janeiro has a way of making Counter-Strike feel bigger than it already is. The crowd at Farmasi Arena doesn't just watch — it reacts to every round like the outcome personally affects them. Starting April 13, sixteen teams will find out whether that energy helps or breaks them, as IEM Rio returns for its fourth edition with a $1,000,000 prize pool and another shot at ESL Grand Slam points on the line.
Group stage: Group A is where it gets ugly early
The format hasn't changed much. Both groups run double elimination, all Bo3, with three teams advancing to the single-elimination playoff. The group winners skip straight to the semis; second and third place start at the quarters. Simple enough on paper.
In practice, Group A is a nightmare draw. Vitality, Team Spirit, Falcons, and G2 are all in the same half of the bracket before the playoff even starts. Someone with a genuine shot at the trophy is going home after two or three matches. Group B looks more manageable on the surface — NAVI, MOUZ, FURIA, Aurora — but has its own landmines.
The three qualifier spots are worth watching too. HOTU and Gentle Mates earned their way in, and both have nothing to lose. That combination occasionally produces upsets in the early rounds when the favorites are still finding their footing.
Vitality: the team everyone else is playing against

There's not much debate about who the favorite is. Vitality have already won IEM Krakow 2026, PGL Cluj-Napoca 2026, and BLAST Open Rotterdam 2026 this season. Three major trophies before April. At some point you stop calling that "form" and start calling it dominance.
Their first match is against RED Canids, which is not exactly a stern test. The more interesting question is what happens when they face Falcons or Spirit in the later group rounds. The m0NESY/NiKo pairing at Falcons has the individual quality to compete — they just haven't converted it into a trophy yet. Spirit, despite a forgettable 7-8 at Rotterdam, have a habit of showing up in semifinal situations when the bracket thins out.
If anyone beats Vitality here, it's one of those two. Maybe NAVI, who won ESL Pro League Season 23 and came second at Rotterdam, if the final matchup goes that way again.
The middle tier and what to actually expect from them
FURIA deserve a separate mention. Playing in Brazil, with Brazilian fans, in front of a crowd that knows every player's name — it changes the atmosphere. FalleN has been here before, in this city, on stages like this. Their results this year have been inconsistent, but writing them off before the groups are played would be a mistake.
Aurora are genuinely unpredictable. XANTARES and woxic can take over a map without much warning, and the team reached the EPL S23 grand final recently. MOUZ are reliable enough to reach playoffs in most events but haven't shown they can win one.
G2 are harder to read. Their recent wins came on the tier-2 circuit, so how much that translates to this field is unclear. But they have something to prove after their roster changes, which tends to focus a team.
The bigger picture

This is also the last IEM with this exact playoff structure. From 2027, ESL moves to an eight-team playoff format. So in a sense, this edition closes out an era — not that it will affect how the teams play, but it gives the tournament a small amount of added finality.
Realistically, the final is Vitality against NAVI or Falcons. Realistically, Vitality win it. But this is still Rio, the crowd is still the loudest in CS, and the groups are chaotic enough that something unexpected almost always happens before the weekend.
