Cloud9 Secure a Dominant Victory Over Fnatic at Shanghai MAJOR 2024: Opening Stage

The second match of the day for these teams saw both starting their game day on a rough note. Both squads had suffered losses in their previous matches, making this victory crucial for either side.

The match was a BO1 encounter, with Ancient chosen as the battlefield. Cloud9 began on the T side, delivering aggressive and confident plays from the very first round, forcing fnatic to adopt a reactive, second-number playstyle. Fnatic appeared uncertain about how to counter their opponent and displayed a lack of synergy among their players.

At one point, fnatic had an opportunity to bounce back, managing to secure a few rounds. However, the 15th and 16th rounds executed by Cloud9 heavily impacted fnatic's morale. In round 15, Cloud9 had only one M4A4 at their disposal, while fnatic had a full buy but failed to capitalize, losing the round 5-0. Losing such pivotal rounds can severely shake a team’s confidence. In the following 16th round, despite having a numerical advantage and a planted bomb, fnatic lost a 3v1 situation, allowing a Cloud9 player to defuse the bomb in the smoke.

Fnatic’s mistakes in this game were evident, but Cloud9’s preparation should not be underestimated. They showcased a strong performance against their opponents, with ICY particularly standing out, finishing the map with an impressive 25/5/5 scoreline and a 2.07 HLTV rating.

As a result, the teams now hold the following records: Cloud9 at 1-1 and fnatic at 0-2. Despite these setbacks, both teams still have a chance to advance to the closed qualifiers for the Shanghai MAJOR 2024.
