The review of The Chongqing Major 2019

Lord Matus
The review of The Chongqing Major 2019

The second Major tournament of the season 2018/2019 has come to its logical end. The guys from Team Secret have raised the desired cup over their heads. We will make a conclusion about each team and notice interesting facts from the Major.

The teams, which have disappointed

Alliance

Boxi and the company have been playing together for an enough long time and look pretty confident on the Tier-2 stage and online tournaments, however, they don’t do their best at a large championship one more time. The roster has placed 13th-16th on the outcome of The Chongqing major and this is obviously not a satisfying result for such a famous organization.

Team Aster

Team Aster has probably become the main disappointment of the tournament, which hadn’t won a map during the competition. The guys have prevailed at the qualifiers in China, having overcome such teams as Vici Gaming and PSG.LGD, so all fans expected them to reach the top eight at least but the roster spent only five maps at The Chongqing Major and only of them lasted more than 30 minutes. The roster has obvious problems in the terms of playing, however, it’s too early to write them off, because absolutely all Chinese teams have performed not in the best way at the competition.

Forward Gaming

The guys from Forward Gaming made a replacement in September and the team’s play hasn’t been well since then. The joining of such experienced player as UNiVeRsE had to reinforce the roster seemingly, however, can’t find a mutual language with the champion of The International 2015. It’s worth to notice that Forward hasn’t placed higher than 5th-6th at any championship since the joining of Saahil Arora to Forward Gaming and The Chongqing Major 2019 might be an obvious reason for a reshuffle because there is no progress after five months of collective playing.

Vici Gaming

Vici Gaming has held the 7th-8th place on the outcome of the competition and it can’t be said that this is a bad result but they had been expected way more. The team is one of the best representatives of China and the championship was hosted in the same region, so a home crowd had to help the strong roster to get to the top four but PSG.LGD and Evil Geniuses had a different opinion about that.

The teams, which have surprised

EHOME

Despite the championship was predictable enough, EHOME became a real discovery of the championship because it’s not easy to enter the top six after a victory at a Minor tournament. The team has triumphed at The Bucharest Minor 2019 and come to The Chongqing Major without new ideas. It’s almost impossible to prepare new strategies in a week but the team played so well that created a lot of problems even to the strongest rosters. Puppey told in his interview for Maincast that the match against Faith_bian and the company was almost the most difficult at the championship.

Thunder Predator

The team came to the tournament as an obvious underdog and many people bet on their elimination at the first stage after the group stage, however, the guys showed their character and fought against Forward Gaming, after which sensationally defeated The Pango in the first loser’s round. In their defense, they were not able to show maximum, playing with a stand-in. As a result, Thunder Predator has shown themselves well at the competition and the 9th-12th place can be called a very solid result for a team from South America and the main thing is that the roster has a potential.

The teams, which have performed as they had been expected

The Pango

Initially, The Pango was not on the list of favorites and the replacements, which had been revealed right before the start of the competition, left the guys without a chance to achieve a good result. The team showed itself well at the group stage and finished it on the third place, however, lost to the team from South America at the playoff stage. The 13th-16th place can’t be called satisfying for Ghostik and the company but the replacement hasn’t allowed them to show their maximum and the guys looked pretty well in the game.

TNC Predator

Ninjaboogie and his team can be said that they performed just like they had to because they had beaten weaker opponents lost to stronger ones. On the outcome of the competition, TNC Predator has placed 9th-12th and will go to Southeast Asia against to fight with Fnatic and Mineski for a title of the strongest team in its region.

J.Storm

As we had suspected, FoREv and the company doesn’t set the world on fire and any place, except the last one, can be called a good result. The roster held the last place in a group and they were lucky a bit with seeding at the playoffs because Forward Gaming was probably the only team, which J.Storm had known clearly after the regional qualifiers. Anyone can win a bo1 match and the fortune was on the side of the Korean-American mix this time but the guys lost to Fnatic at the next stage.

Chaos Esports Club

Chaos has come to the competition as “a dark horse” and fully confirmed this at the playoff when they beat Alliance and were competitive against the guys from Vici Gaming. By the way, the team played bad enough at the initial stage but group A had a status of “the death group”.

Virtus.Pro

“The Bears” performed on their level and advanced to the grand final of the Major, having shown that they are on an untouchable level and can lose only to themselves - Solo was not able to play in the semi-final of the winner’s bracket due to a bad state of health and his position was held by ArsZeeqq, the team’s current coach. The team defeated the best team of the Celestial with a score 2:0 even with the coach on the roster. As a result, the second place is a good result for the team, which have guaranteed itself a spot at The International, having two players of the main roster with health issues.

Team Secret

Puppey and the company have initially been considered to be one of the favorites of the competition because the team had placed second at the previous Major tournament. The guys demonstrated their advantage over opponents at the competition and won the rematch against Virtus.Pro in the grand final. Secret received a status of the champion and the victory was incredibly important for Zai and Nisha because such results had been expected from Team Secret, so we have put them in this category.

PSG.LGD

The team headed by fy had become significantly weaker after The International 2018 and doesn’t seem like the best team in the world now but gains momentum. PSG.LGD had placed 5th-6th at the previous rating competition and entered the top four at The Chongqing Major. Actually, Team Secret, Virtus.Pro, Evil Geniuses, and PSG.LGD play on almost the same level and the fortune was not on the side of the Chinese team this time. It has become known recently that the mid-player of PSG.LGD, Somnus丶M had taken a break to solve personal issues. It’s unknown for how long he left the Chinese team but PSG.LGD will not be able to progress on the professional stage in an appropriate way until his return.

Evil Geniuses

Always placing third, Evil Geniuses has decided not to change the tradition and become the bronze medalists again, which is a predictable result for the North American team. The team was performing horribly in its group, however, was gaining a good shape during the championship and looked like a pretty strong roster at the playoff stage. SumaiL and the company lost two matches in the final stage and both “offenders” of EG, Virtus.pro and Team Secret advanced to the grand final.

Fnatic

Fnatic was performing great during the season and didn’t lose its shape. Iceiceice and the company held the first place in their group, having defeated Evil Geniuses and Alliance. They were not able to cope with EHOME and PSG.LGD, which looked very strong, at the playoffs. As we had suspected, the team had enough strength to repeat the success of the previous Major and they didn’t only meet the challenge but even improved the last year’s results a bit.

Team Liquid

Team Liquid came to the competition with a stand-in and no one had expected good results from them but it became clear at the group stage that the team was stronger than the majority of participants even without Miracle. After a successful performance at its quartet, the roster lost to Team Secret but beat TNC Predator and made people believe in GH and the company again but they were unable to defeat Fnatic. Despite Team Liquid has already made their fans get used to the best places - the 7th-8th place with a stand-in is a very decent result for them.

Interesting facts

  • Even despite Team Liquid managed to hold the 7th-8th place at the tournament - the mutual understanding with a stand-in was not on the highest level.
  • Virtus.Pro was playing on an incredible level and beat PSG.LGD even with a coach. By the way, this fact reflects Chinese teams’ bad shape.
  • Ghostik from The Pango made 392 pings on a map in the match against Team Liquid.
Team Aster is the only team, which has a 0% win rate, having played five maps.
  • The grand final of The Chongqing Major was watched by 503,686 viewers, without Chinese users. By the way, matches with Virtus.Pro were in the top five three times.
