Following the announcement of the Mid-Season Invitational 2023, Riot Games has shed light on the next tournament of the Worlds series, Worlds 2023. The main championship of the competitive season will receive a global redesign of the format and a new way to qualify for the main tournament of the year.

Worlds 2023, which will be held in South Korea for the first time since 2018, will bring together 22 teams in one place. They will be divided into 3 separate stages depending on the performance: Play-In, Swiss System (Swiss), Knockouts, but before moving on to their consideration, we suggest taking a look at the new qualifying round for the Worlds - Worlds Qualifying Series.

Worlds Qualifying Series

The first-ever Worlds Qualifying Series tournament will feature teams that place 4th in the LEC and LCS in a split ahead of the Worlds. The winner of the bo5 match will travel to Korea, where he will join the 21 teams who qualified for the main tournament of the year by a different route.

The 2023 season will be a test season for the Worlds Qualifying Series. In the future, Riot plans to expand the list of WQC participants with teams from other regions.

Worlds 2023 format

As mentioned above, the World Championship itself will be divided into 3 stages. Play-In will be the opening one, where 8 teams will get.

play-in

  • 2 best teams from VCS, PCS
  • Best team from LLA, CBLOL, LJL and WQS winner
  • Play-In is a pair of double-elimination brackets with four teams each. Two teams advance to the Swiss round.
  • In each group, 3 matches are played in the Double-Elimination format, where the "top winner" from one group will play up to five victories against the "bottom winner" from the other for a place in the next stage - the Swiss Stage.

Swiss System

  • 16 participants.
  • 5 rounds in the "Swiss system" format.
  • The stage will begin with each team being randomly paired up against a team from a different region. Each of these couples will play more than 1 match.
  • Teams with the same results play in the second round (1-0 vs 1-0, 0-1 vs 0-1). Continues until the team reaches 3 wins, which guarantees promotion to the Knockout Stage. Matches for passing to the next stage or through are played up to two victories.

Knockout Stage

The main stage of Worlds 2023 will remain unchanged. The Knockout Stage will be attended by 8 teams that have passed the Swiss system.

All matches on the Knockout Stage will be played in bo5 format. As before, each round will be played on a separate day.
