Faker Shines: The Lone Azir Success Against Orianna at LoL Worlds 2023

Azir has faced off against Orianna multiple times in this year's LoL Worlds 2023, but only one player has managed to secure a victory with this champion in the matchup.

Both Azir and Orianna are iconic champions in League of Legends, and they have regained their prominence in the mid lane during this World Championship. Orianna, in particular, has become a highly contested pick for the role. However, when it comes to countering this strong late-game mage, some players have attempted to make Azir work. Unfortunately, throughout the World Championship, Azir's performance has fallen short, resulting in a dismal win rate of 2-10.

LoL Worlds 2023: Azir Finds Success Against Orianna, Thanks to Faker

The sole player who has demonstrated success with Azir against Orianna and managed to secure wins in this challenging matchup is none other than T1's star mid laner, Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok, renowned as one of the world's best Azir players.

Analyzing the game statistics from the World Championship, it's evident that these two mid lane champions have clashed a total of 12 times. Out of these 12 encounters, Azir has claimed victory in only two games, while Orianna has dominated with ten wins.

Faker's first notable victory with Azir against Orianna occurred during T1's Swiss Stage best-of-three series against BLG. In this match, Faker picked Azir while BLG's Zeng "Yagao" Qi played Orianna, resulting in Azir's first win in this matchup.

The quarter-finals witnessed a similar scenario, with Faker once again opting for Azir against Orianna when facing LNG. This decision secured another victory for Azir.

It's clear that teams and players need to explore alternative strategies to counter Orianna, as Azir doesn't seem to provide a reliable answer to her late-game damage, exceptional shielding, and strong laning phase. Unless, of course, you're the legendary Faker.
