The road to Bucharest — Quincy Crew
Yuriy SheremetWe continue learning about the participants of the anniversary The International 10. The second representative of North America – Quincy Crew is next in line.
«Five from Queens» is one of the most interesting and extraordinary teams at The International 10. Let’s dive into the history of the team and try to find out their road to Bucharest.
Quincy Crew’s portfolio
Traditionally before the start of the main review, we will briefly take a look at the parameters of QC. The main aspects are below.
- The date of the foundation of the club: August 29, 2018;
- The roster for The International 10: YawaR, Quinn (CCnC), Lelis, MSS, SVG;
- The region: North America;
- How the team made it to The International: the 4th place in the DPC rate;
- The main achievements: the 1st place at ESL One Thailand 2020: Americas, the 2nd place at Dota Pro Circuit 2021: S1 – North America Upper Division, the 1st place at Dota Pro Circuit 2021: S2 – North America Upper Division.
As we have learned about the main aspects, let’s move to a more detailed review.
The first appearance
Talking about Quincy Crew, we can’t but remember about 2 more teams: VGJ.Storm and Forward Gaming. «Five from Queens» owe its existence to VGJ.Storm.
Quincy Crew stood out on the competitive scene in August 2018. Resolut1on announced the creation of the new team after the end of The International 8.
The former players of VGJ.Storm became few agents but for a short time. The team was signed by Forward Gaming in September that year.
The former Quincy Crew spent under the colors of the new club a bit less than a year. It may sound ironic, but that period has become the key one on Quincy Crew’s way to Bucharest.
Forward Gaming
The first roster of Forward Gaming included 3 players who are now representing Quincy Crew. There were YawaR, MSS, and SVG. Besides, Resolut1on and UNiVeRsE were playing in the team.
The appearance of the roster full of big names in North America could not remain without attention. Especially when Forward gaming almost fully consisted of the roster of VGJ.STorm, which had placed 7th-8th at TI8.
FG definitely was very promising. The expectations were partially met.
Forward Gaming played in the closed American qualifiers to The Kuala Lumpur Major a few days after its foundation. Predictably, the team held the second place, having lost to the single leader of the region – Evil Geniuses.
The fact that two teams had to go to The Kuala Lumpur Major from North America was good for Forward Gaming. Forward Gaming was one of them.
Forward Gaming got in one group with paiN X, Alliance, and Virtus.pro at the tournament. The top 8 team of The International 8 finished third.
Not the most successful start sent Forward Gaming to the lower bracket where they defeated Gambit and were beaten by Evil Geniuses in the second round. The first appearance of Forward Gaming at the Major was over in the 9th-12th place.
After the performance in Kuala Lumpur, Forward Gaming went to play the closed qualifiers to The Chongqing Major. They repeated the result achieved in the closed qualification to The Kuala Lumpur Major.
Having placed 2nd in the qualifiers, Forward Gaming tried to overcome the result of The Kuala Lumpur Major. They failed to do so.
In Chongqing, Forward Gaming performed even worse than the previous time. They held the 13th-16th place and did not win a single match in the playoffs.
Forward Gaming made their third attempt to realize their potential at the Major at DreamLeague Season 11. But the team faced problems in the qualifying stage.
Resolut1on’s team placed 3rd in the closed qualification to DreamLeague Season 11. They were lucky because 3 teams were supposed to go to Sweden from North America.
The chance received due to the distribution of quotas at DreamLeague Season 11 did not help Forward Gaming. They finished another Major placing 13th-16th.
The series of such mediocre performances led to reshuffles. YawaR and MSS stayed in the team. They were joined by CCnC, Sneyking, and Kitrak.
The team went to OGA Dota PIT Minor 2019 with this roster. However, good results were not expected there too.
Having refreshed the roster, the team did not fix the existing issues and finished 5th-6th at the Minor, as a result.
There was a single replacement in the team later and pieliedie arrived instead of MSS. This minor change helped Forward Gaming to prevail in the qualifiers to EPICENTER Major 2019.
Despite the expectations, Forward did more than their best. The team held the 9th-12th place and it was definitely not enough for receiving a spot in The International 2019.
However, thanks to the direct invite to TI received by EG and the absence of decent competition in the region, Forward Gaming achieved victory in the qualifiers to TI9 in North America. A ticket to The International could become a sending point for the club organization but it did not.
The management of Forward suffered from financial issues and after making it to TI9, the roster of FG was signed by Newbee. In such a way, the tag Forward Gaming disappeared from the informational space and we have heard nothing about it since then.
The performance of ex-Forward under the tag Newbee could not be called successful. But it could not be called a failure as well.
The North Americans held the 9th-12th place and it was the best result for the majority of the players of the club in their careers.
Returning to the roots
Newbee disbanded the international roster after the performance at TI9 and the players returned home. Quincy Crew was back in action.
Quincy almost received its modern look in 2019. The roster included: YawaR, CCnC (Quinn), SabeRLight, MSS, and SVG.
Quincy Crew returned home and the world entered the pandemic era. But it just benefited Quincy Crew.
The pandemic year and domination in North America
The COVID-19 pandemic changed the balance of power in all regions of competitive Dota a lot. North America was not an exception.
It mainly happened due to the fact that the top teams like EG lost their motivation to perform at local events. TI 2020 was postponed, the future was bleak.
The unchanged leaders of the region took a break temporarily and their place was quickly taken by Quincy Crew. They had been there until 2021.
Quincy Crew prevailed at 8 tournaments and finished second at 4 more in the season 2020. But was there any sense in it? As it appeared later, yes.
Dota began returning to its normal state in 2021. Valve announced the new DPC season where the regional Dota scene had the biggest value. The work done by Quincy Crew in 2020 finally brought its results.
DPC-2021 and a ticket to The International
After the final distribution of the competitive Dota scene into the equal regions, EG returned to North America. They have become the main and only competitor of Quincy Crew.
In the first DPC season, Quincy and EG played for the first place in the tie-break series. QC lost and held the 2nd place
Quincy Crew went to the Major for the first time under the colors of Quincy Crew in April 2021. However, they were not able to advance higher than the top 9-12. Quincy Crew, playing with a stand-in held the 9th-12th at ONE Esports Singapore Major.
After that, the scenario was similar to the first season. However, the final changed a bit.
This time, Quincy Crew managed to beat EG in a fair battle and held the first place in the highest division of North America. QC went to The Kyiv Major as the first team of the region, which gave them power.
WePlay AniMajor was pretty successful for Quincy Crew: the team placed 5th-6th and earned 300 additional DPC points, which was the most important thing.
After the end of the season 2021, Quincy Crew had 1100 DPC points on their score, which made them the 4th team in the world. A direct invite to The International 10 was received.
Having earned the desired and important slot in TI10, Quincy Crew took part in the commercial event ESL One Summer 2021. The team finished 5th-6th there, after which it left in the shadows to prepare for the final tournament of the year.
And we are leaving in the shadows to tell you next time about one of the main contenders to achieve victory in Bucharest and also the first team of the region.
