Overview of the new agent in VALORANT - Deadlock: history, abilities and release date
Elen StelmakhOn the final day of VALORANT Champions Tour 2023: Masters Tokyo, Riot Games has officially unveiled a new agent in VALORANT - Deadlock. The Sentinel Girl has a number of unique skills that she can use to stall opponents and repair sneaky traps with electrical impulses. In this piece, we'll talk about Deadlock's abilities, learn a little more about the agent herself, and provide a release date for the character in VALORANT.
Agent Deadlock's history
At one point during VALORANT's research of the Kingdom Corporation's Los Angeles-based project, Landfall, the organization was able to pick up chatter about a loading of goods in Norway. Seeing this as something of an issue, Protocol sent Sova to follow the team and trace its final destination.
Leading it to a facility in the far north of the Svalbard archipelago, Sova arrived there and found no activity, no sign of life, apart from a faint beacon switched on from inside. Upon entering the facility, Sova eventually reached the isolation room and discovered the aftermath of the attack: the entire capture team was dead, except for one survivor, a blonde-haired woman with her arm completely torn off.
The woman was one of three elite hunters from the Ståljeger security forces who had been tasked with escorting a scientist from Project Landfall to the site and overseeing the extraction and transportation of a very special object - a bear that had been transformed by experiments on it. Her team also arrived at the facility and found it empty and almost without electricity, and upon entering the isolation cell, they discovered that the bear had escaped from its enclosure just before the freed animal attacked them, killing her companions and the scientist who was on landfall.
As one of the neighbouring cells was still working, the woman was able to lure the bear into it. When she tried to trap it inside, even though the cell was on, the bear stuck its head between the closing doors, biting her on the left arm and clamping it in its jaws. After this bite, substances from the bear's body entered the woman's system, causing her to lose her bearings and hear an echoing voice before the sound of the gunshot brought her out of her delirium. The scientist shot the bear in the last moment of his life while dying on the ground before collapsing.
Now that the chamber was fully charged, the woman activated it to cause a surge of energy to fill the chamber and burst out through the gap between the doors, destroying both the bear and the hand clasped in its jaws. Now that the ordeal was over, the woman slowly stepped over the body of the fallen scientist, picked up the beacon that had fallen nearby and activated it moments before finally collapsing.
After the rescue, the woman was taken back to headquarters where her missing arm was replaced with a new prosthetic arm, and she has since joined as a new agent - VALORANT.

Deadlock agent abilities list
GravNet
The basic ability that costs 200 credits. Introduces a gravimetric grenade which fires an electromagnetic charge that spreads like a spider's net. Enemies in range are forced to crouch down, slowing their movement speed considerably. This action lasts for 4 seconds.
Sonic Sensor
This basic ability costs 200 credits. Sonic Sensor is a deployable sensor that can be stuck onto any surface. It reacts to your opponents' footsteps, and once they make a sound, the sensor causes a stun if they fall within its range. Additionally, the sensor remains invisible for 3 seconds after being attached, allowing you to use it to quietly stun your enemies.
Barrier Mesh
This basic ability is available to the player at the start of each round, free of charge. It is a disc-shaped device that activates an "X" shaped electromagnetic barrier. This can be used to immobilise opponents against the wall. However, the opponent can destroy the electromagnetic support. thereby breaking one of the barriers. The barrier also lets bullets through, which can be used in different tactics.
Annihilation
An ultimatum ability, which becomes available after gaining 7 points. When activated, Deadlock releases a special charge that transforms its energy into a cocoon and draws your closest opponent to the point of detonation. If the opponent fails to break free from its confinement, it is killed. It's impossible to break the cocoon from the inside - you can destroy the protective shell with shots. The duration of the cocoon is 8 seconds.
Role and function of the Deadlock in the game
Since Deadlock is a Sentinel agent, her abilities increase exponentially when defending. Teams can use it to build versatile traps and disorient an opponent, creating a barrier to advancement. Many professionals have noted that Deadlock can seriously change the mark and make it difficult to play offensively. In addition, her skills can be safely combined with the abilities of teammates, which potentially gives an unthinkable advantage for the defense.
Thus, the developers have succeeded in introducing a completely new meaning agent that is capable of turning the perception of playing for the defensive side of the game upside down. Deadlock is undoubtedly part of the new meta, as her skills will be of great use on all active map rolls.
