Esports news Complexity Gaming
In brief:
Complexity Gaming is one of the most famous and oldest multigaming organizations in North America. Founded back in 2003, its rosters are now represented in a few big, including CSGO, Dota 2, WoW, StarCraft II, FIFA, and others.
In this material, we will remember the key moments in the history of Complexity in Dota 2.
The first appearance
Complexity appeared in Dota 2 back in 2012. Then, the North American organization signed the members of the team team FIRE. The roster consisted of:
· TC
· FLUFFNSTUFF
· ixmike88
· jeyo
· HANNAH_MONTANA
CoL was playing with this roster during the whole 2012. In this period, they managed to prove themselves, having held a few first places at weekly tournaments and won one of the most prestigious tournaments of that time – The Defense Season 2.
Also, the team managed to advance to The International 2012 that year. The team demonstrated nice results in the group stage at the main tournament of the year, having placed 2nd. However, CoL was unlucky in the playoffs and the team was eliminated from the championship, having held the 9th-12th place.
After TI 2012, Complexity held the 3rd-4th place at joinDOTA Masters Special Edition II. In December 2012, the roster of Complexity was bought by other teams: TC, FLUFFNSTUFF, and ixmike88 moved to Team Liquid, jeyo transferred to EG, and HANNAH_MONTANA went to Fnatic.NA.
After the incident, Complexity needed time to assemble a new roster. They managed to return to the professional scene only a year later, in 2014.
The return of CoL
Complexity announced its return to the professional scene in August-September 2014. The organization signed the mix stayGreen. However, not all members of that team found slots in Complexity. Limmp, MoonMeander, and Riser left in the main squad. DragonFist and Bloody Nine joined the team later.
With this roster, CoL was playing till the end of the year. During this time, the performance at Dota 2 Canada Cup – Season 3 can be called the most successful one where Complexity placed 3rd and Battle of America where CoL held the 2nd place.
Wagamama joined the team at the end of 2014, however, he did not last long on the roster. Complexity entered the path of reshuffles in 2015.
They were looking for a decent roster for almost a year, playing various qualifiers to big tournaments. However, Complexity lacked a bit everywhere. Over the year, they entered the top 3 of the North American qualifiers more than 10 times but they passed the qualifiers only three times.
In 2015, they achieved victory in the qualifiers to The International 2015, StarLadder I-League StarSeries Season 1, and MDL 2015 Winter. At the main tournament of 2015, Complexity participated with the roster of Zyzz, swindlemelonzz, MoonMeander, Zfreek, and Fly. The team managed to place 9th-12th at the championship, which was a decent result for the team, considering the past performances. However, CoL changed the roster after TI 2015.
The team was left by Moonmeander and Fly who founded their own team after TI. Mjw and wayto joined the team in September, however, they departed from the team in October. Complexity completed its roster in November, having signed Chassie, Limmp, and Handsken. CoL was playing with this roster till August 2016.
CoL managed to prove itself a few times at big championships during this period. They held the 5th-6th place at The Shanghai Major 2016, the 3rd-4th place at Dota Pit League Season 4, the 5th-6th place at ESL One Manila 2016, and the 4th place at EPICENTER 2016. However, CoL was not able to make it to the main tournament of the year – The International 2016, which encouraged changes inside the roster.
Handsken, Limmp, and Chassie left the team in August. Their slots were taken by justin, canceL^^, and Moo in September. With this roster, Complexity took part in The Boston Major 2016 where they placed 9th-16th.
2017 was spent in searches of an optimal roster.
The period of instability and attempts to find its play
Complexity made experiments on the rosters in 2017. Cancel^^ departed from the team in February and his spot was held by 747. Both 747 and monkeys-forever left the team in April. Their positions were taken by Feero and DeMoN in May. Having played a few qualifying matches and lost the qualifiers to The International, DeMoN left the team and Feero followed him and departed from the roster. Chassie and Limmp returned to CoL in September.
CoL tried to play at various championships being in the swing of regular reshuffles. But as it had happened previously with them the team stopped on the 3rd-4th places. The most successful performances were at StarLadder i-League Invitational Season 3 and World Cyber Arena 2017 North America Finals. They held the 3rd-4th place at the first tournament and the 2nd place at the second one.
CoL placed 4th at Perfect World Masters at the end of 2017.
2018-2019 and the decline of CoL
Complexity managed to proceed to a few big tournaments in 2018. There were ESL One Katowice and The Bucharest Major. The team placed 13th-16th at the first one and held the 9th-11th place at the second one. After that, Kyle left the team, he became an active media person and moved to analysing/casting later.
Chasie left the team after the 9th-10th place at EPICENTER XL in May, Adam and MoonMeander joined the squad.
The team lost the qualification to The International 2018 in June, having placed 5th there. After that, there were frequent reshuffles in the team. Adam, Moo, and MoonMeander parted ways with the team in August. Their positions were taken by Skem, Sneyking, and also EternalEnvy. Having played a month, Envy and SneyKing left the roster and Skem was suspended from the club activity due to his behavior at DreamLeague Season 10 where the team held the 5th-6th place.
Meracle, Deth, and Adam arrived instead of the departed players in November. The team tried to fix its play and secure a spot in the top of the region in 2019, however, it failed. The best results of CoL were the 2nd place at ESL One Katowice 2019, the 7th-8th place at ESL One Mumbai 2019, and the 9th-12th place at MDL Disneyland Paris Major.
Dota Summit 10 was the last tournament for CoL in July 2019. Complexity held the 4th position there, after which they disappeared from the competitive Dota 2 scene.
