Esports news Cloud9
In brief:
Cloud9 is one of the most famous and media multigaming in North America and beyond. The rosters of C9 are represented in many esports disciplines, including Dota 2, CSGO, League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch, and others.
We offer you to read about the Dota 2 branch of the American organization.
The first appearance
Cloud9 was not in a hurry to debut on the professional Dota 2 scene. It became known about the organization’s intentions to try the new niche in 2014. Then, we saw the first Cloud9 roster. It was the former roster of Speed Gaming, which consisted of the following players:
· pieliedie
· EternalEvny
· aui_2000
· bone7
· SingSing
Cloud9 spent a few months with this roster.
The first results
The performance at Monster Energy Invitational was the first test for the players under the new tag. C9 held the 2nd place at that championship.
Then, they were followed by the whole row of lost finals later: C9 held the second places at joinDOTA League 2014 Season 1: Europe, Dota 2 Champions League Season 2, DreamHack Bucharest 2014.
In May 2014, C9 placed 5th-8th at WPC 2014. Then, there was the 2nd place at DreamLeague Season 1.
The team held the 5th-8th place at HyperX D2L Western Challenge and ESL One Frankfurt 2014 in June. However, a spot in The International 2014 was a way more important achievement.
C9 managed to reach the 5th-6th place at the main tournament of the year, which was a nice result for the debut team at such competitions. However, not everyone was satisfied with this result, so SingSing left the team after TI and his spot was taken by FATA.
Cloud9 started the upcoming season with the updated roster.
The season 2015 and attempts to find an optimal roster
The team was doing well after TI 2014. C9 held the second place at World E-sport Championship 2014, achieved victory at NVIDIA Game 24, and held the 2nd position at World Cyber Arena 2014. In October 2014, the team placed 3rd-4th at ESL One New York 2014 and 3rd at StarLadder StarSeries Season 2 later that month.
Cloud9 decided to make a few replacements in January 2015. Aui_2000 and pieliedie were benched from the team, BigDaddy and Misery joined the active roster instead of them.
With the fresh roster, C9 managed to win the qualifiers to Dota 2 Asia Championship, which was one of the most prestigious championships at that moment. C9 held the 5th-6th place at the tournament.
The team placed 3rd at StarLadder StarSeries Season 12 two months later, in April 2015, and it participated in The Summit 3 in a month where it held the 5th-6th place.
C9 started preparing for TI 2015 in the summer of 2015. The team closed the top 3 at MarsTV Dota 2 League 2015 Spring, entered the top 8 at ESL One Frankfurt 2015, and held the 2nd place at Dota Pit League Season 3.
Cloud9 received a direct invitation to The International 2015. However, they performed not too confidently at the championship, having placed 9th-12th.
C9 decided to reformat the Dota 2 roster after The International 2015: the past players were removed from the active roster and their spots were held by the former Dark Horse squad. The new roster was represented by 4 Americans and a Canadian:
· Ritsu
· Brax
· MSS
· SVG
· 1437
However, the roster’s fate was not to live long. The team achieved victory at BTS Americas #2 and qualified to MLG World Finals and The Frankfurt Major 2015 in September. But C9 was unlucky at the championships: the team placed 7th-8th at MLG World Finals but the team had the devastating loss at The Frankfurt Major 2015 and held the 13th-16th place.
After the performance at The Frankfurt Major 2015, Cloud9 refused its roster and disappeared from the competitive Dota 2 scene till 2017.
The return of Cloud9 and new failures
Cloud9 signed a European roster in 2017. This time, the team was joined by the former players of Danish Bears:
· Ace
· 13abyKnight
· HeStEJoE-RoTTeN
· NoiA
· Ryze
Cloud9 was playing with this roster till May 2017. They held the 3rd place at ProDotA Cup Europe #13, the 2nd place at World Electronic Sports Games 2016, and achieved victory at OMEN Dota 2 Cup. However, the initial positive results quickly turned into not that confident performances.
C9 placed 9th-12th at ProDotA Cup Europe #15 in February and failed the qualifiers to The Kiev Major 2017 later.
In March, the team held the 5th-8th place at Dota 2 Championship League Season 11 and the 5th-6th at ProDotA Cup Europe #16. Cloud9 placed 9th-10th at Mr. Cat Invitational Europe in May but they failed the qualifiers to DOTA Summit 7 a few days later.
In July, the management of Cloud9 decided to get rid of the Danish roster in favor of Team NP, which had qualified to TI 2017. The following players returned to C9 again: EternaLEnVy, FATA-, MSS, Aui_2000, and pieliedie.
However, there was no triumphant return. The team held the 13th-16th place at The International 2017, which consequently led to the full disband. C9 left the competitive Dota 2 again.
2020 and another demise
C9 made an attempt to return to the competitive Dota 2 in January 2020. A new roster was announced then, which included: skem, vtFaded, MISERY, Flee, pieliedie.
C9 failed the qualifiers to ESL One Los Angeles 2020 with this roster. Later, the roster was changed: skem, vtFaded, and Flee left the team and the spots of the departed players were taken by EternaLEnVy, Ace, and Sneyking.
After another update, C9 managed to hold the 6th place at DOTA Summit 12 and the 5th-6th place at BTS Pro Series. C9 left the scene again in April 2020.
The organization and rewards
Jack Etienne is the CEO of the organization and Kunal Patel was a manager of the roster.

Since the foundation of the Dota 2 branch, different rosters have brought more than 2,100,000 dollars of prize money for the organization.
