Review of DOTA Summit 11
Ihor MatusSurprising teams
jfshfh178
From the very beginning, the CIS teams approached the championship as outsiders. The reason for that is weak game of the teams at matches that had been held before the minor. Low expectations about jfshfh178 were connected with their way at the LAN final. At the CIS qualifiers, the first places were taken by Virtus.pro and HellRaisers, while jfshfh178 got placed at the third position. It wasn't so hard as Old but Gold got the fourth place. This team announced their disband leaving only a couple of people in the roster Despite all the expectations, jfshfh178 managed to beat Ninjas in Pyjamas twice and to have a great fight with Invictus Gaming. Thanks to that, Pikachu and his teammates made it to the playoff and stopped at the fourth position in the tournament bracket. Hard work and efforts brought $42,000 and 90 rating points to the team. Taking into account the level of the teams jfshfh178 outdid, this result is really great for this roster.
HellRaisers
HellRaisers' situation is similar to jfshfh178, however, unlike the Belarusian team, Miposhka and his teammates made it to the championship themselves. HR's situation got worse when ALOHADANCE claimed that he didn't want to train with his new teammates and left the team. The players had to look for a replacement and found it in the person of CemaTheSlayer. The Ukrainian flew to Los Angeles together with the esportsmen and became a bronze finalist at DOTA Summit 11. The team got to a more difficult Group B. There they had to play with Chaos Esports Club, Geek Fam, and Ad Finem. Fighting with Chaos, the CIS team couldn't show anything but at the elimination matches with Ad Finem, HellRaisers suddenly won 2-1 and at the decisive battle managed to defeat Geek Fam also. Making two sensations, HR made it to the playoff and the series of wins was interrupted by the Chinese from Invictus Gaming. At the lower bracket, HR beat their countrymen from jfshfh178 and passed further where they had to play Chaos. The revenge match was not successful and the third place taken by the team provided the players with a prize of $54,000 and 110 Dota Pro Circuit points.
Disappointing teams
Ninjas in Pyjamas
Due to some famous players, Ninjas in Pyjamas have always drawn special attention of the audience. The same happened at this championship and this time this factor turned out to have a negative effect on NiP. The only team that ppd and his teammates managed to beat was paiN Gaming. Considering their result, the win over paiN cannot be considered as a worthy achievement. The Europeans lost against jfshfh178 and lest the tournament taking the 5-6 place. Their efforts resulted in $24,000 and 60 rating points for the team.
Ad Finem
Ad Finem could not make it to the final stage of the competition and it was a surprise for us. Moreover, we could not expect Ad Finem to get placed on the last position in their group. Fighting with Geek Fam, the Greeks was showing great opposition but they could not win any map. Their performance was finished by HellRaisers who beat Ad Finem 2-1 at the elimination match. We remember previous results of the Greeks on the international stage, but at the moment they do not seem to be prepared for the return to the Tier-1 level. At this championship, they took 7-8 place and the efforts brought them $12,000 and 40 Dota Pro Circuit points.
Participants that performed as it had been expected
paiN Gaming
Boring, unspectacular, poor — that is what we can say about the whole performance of the Brazilian roster. At first, we saw minimal opposition from paiN at the match with Invictus Gaming, where the first map got over in 28 minutes, and the second lasted 16. After that, we were pleased to watch the Brazilians in a more difficult battle with NiP, where the victory also did not get to paiN Gaming’s pocket. As a result, paiN was the first to leave the championship as it had been expected and their performance at the LAN final resulted in $12,000 and 40 Dota Pro Circuit points.
Invictus Gaming
Unlike the previous participant in the championship, Invictus Gaming also had a very boring performance making no intrigue. The Chinese team lost only two maps and beat their opponents one after another, rolling over on their opponents. At first, Invictus defeated paiN Gaming, jfshfh178, and after that, they dealt with HellRaisers. At the final of the upper bracket and grand final, Invictus Gaming beat Chaos Esports Club twice. The latter had a chance to win the revenge match but YawaR and the team could not take any map. In the end, Invictus became champions of the tournament and got the main prize of $72,000, 140 Dota Pro Circuit points and a direct invitation to MDL Chengdu Major 2019.
Chaos Esports Club
As it had been expected, Chaos Esports Club performed well. This roster held forth hope and after the roster had been signed, it was clear that the players would want to show their maximum. You should not forget that Chaos gained powerful coach support from Ilya ‘Illidan’ Pivcaev. We did not see the maximum from the players, however, we saw a great Dota performed by them. At the group stage, the esportsman defeated HR and Geek Fam, and then they beat jfshfh178. At all the three matches, they did not lose any map. The first spanner in Chaos’ works was thrown by Invictus Gaming, that ended up the win series of YawaR and the team. Nevertheless, getting down to the lower bracket, Chaos defeated HellRaisers again losing no map. At the grand final, everything went by the script we already know. The second-place brought Chaos $60,000 and 120 rating points. The debut of the players under the tag Chaos Esports Club was successful and receiving an invitation to MDL Chengdu Major 2019 is a result that could be called even more successful.
Geek Fam
Separately, Geek Fam players represent more or less significant figures in the esports world but they did not have enough time to achieve good teamwork. Lack of team cooperation and wrong decisions at some moments led Geek Fam out of the group to the playoff. GF started successfully winning over Ad Finem, but at the battles with Chaos and HellRaisers went down in flames. Winning no map after their victory, the Asians failed some competitions and took the 5-6 place in the tournament bracket. The team earned $24,000 and 60 Dota Pro Circuit points. The players have good potential and could have had better performances. They could have. but they did not.
