In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the success of your expedition directly depends on the strength of your party. As you venture through the dangerous lands of the Continent, you'll need to constantly strengthen your team to face increasingly powerful enemies.

Just like in any turn-based RPG, leveling up is the main way to develop your characters in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. However, the progression system raises a few questions — especially about the maximum level your heroes can reach and how experience is earned.

How to Level Up in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Even though Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 features a unique system of skills, items, and attributes for character progression, leveling up remains the main way to strengthen your party — just like we all love in the RPG genre.

The game offers five playable characters, each starting at level one and earning experience (XP) by defeating enemies and bosses.

Once your party is fully assembled with active and reserve members, keep in mind: after each battle, experience is awarded to all party members. Most of the XP goes to those who fought on the battlefield, but reserve characters also receive their share, allowing the entire team to level up evenly without anyone falling too far behind.

Personally, I think it's a great mechanic — it encourages you to try out every character and experiment with different party combinations. Another big advantage is that the game doesn’t turn into an endless XP grind that makes you feel exhausted after 20 hours of gameplay.

To speed up the leveling process a bit, you can use the "Rest" function at the Expedition Flag. It respawns previously defeated enemies, allowing you to farm XP in familiar areas. It's a sort of soft exploit to gain experience in an easier way.

When leveling up, characters earn Skill Points and Attribute Points, which can be distributed freely. To spend Skill Points, you need to approach an Expedition Flag. If you later want to reassign your skills, you can do it without any penalties using a special item called Recoat.

In addition, the game features a separate weapon upgrade system. You can upgrade your weapons up to level 33 by speaking with the Curator at the camp and using special resources called Chroma Catalysts.
