Key differences between Dota 2 and League of Legends
Maksym YushytsynResemblance of Dota 2 and League of Legends is seen with the naked eye even for a new player. The games are the most popular in MOBA, so the gameplay is almost the same. The developers of both of the games based on the user’s Warcraft 3 map. The base of the mechanics was the same in both of them.
In both of the games there are three lines you build towers on and creeps (minions) walk on. The teams contain 5 players in each. Each of the heroes (champion) is controlled by a player. The players earn gold and experience, buy strengthening items, increase the level of their characters. We can see analogues between heroes of Dota and LoL champions. For instance, Ursa is an analogue of Warwick, Drow Ranger resembles Ashe, while Winter Wyvern is similar to Anivia. The goals of the games are also similar — defeating the main building on the opponent’s base.
But still Dota 2 and LoL are completely different. The developers didn’t change only the main rules there. Small details and peculiarities are different in each of the game. The main differences between Dota 2 and LoL are represented below.
Different game mechanics
One of the main differences is mechanics of the abilities. The main skills in LoL are non-targeted. To put it another way, pointing the cursor at the enemy does not guarantee getting into the aim. ALmost all abilities in League of Legends work in the definite direction or area as, for example, Pudge’s hook, Nyx’s stature. Isolated skills like devocalization of Venge doesn’t exist in LoL. We can say the same about passive skills. If every Dota second hero has passives, they almost do not exist in LoL. Apart from that, every LoL champion has only four abilities. There are no heroes like Invoker in the game. On top of that, LoL characters break out and turn around immediately, which helps to keep the battles dynamic.
Before the map starts, players on each team in League of Legends pro matches can choose 2 "summoner spells". These are special skills who can be used for farming or moving around: blink, extra protection, fire shield and others.
By the end of 2017, Dota 2 hadn’t had the Talent tree — special improvements which gave bonuses to the character on the 10, 15, 20 and 25 levels. LoL has had talents since the moment it was released. It is one of the examples of successful borrowing of mechanics between the games.
It is a quite important distinction that in LoL killing inhibitors (Barracks) strengthens creeps only for 5 minutes. As soon as the time has ended up, the tasks restore. In LoL two teams can choose the same heroes.

Couriers and teleports
It is difficult to imagine a game without couriers for any Dota player. It is crucial to deliver items to your line not to lose extra time. Killing of the winged assistant can damage team’s mobility. There are no couriers in LoL. Tp get any item, a player has to return to the base, By the way, the shops on the LoL map is located only near fountains of both of the teams. There are no Side and Forrest shops in LoL as there are in Dota 2.
But lack of couriers in LoL is a bit compensated by global teleports. In Dota 2 the player may teleport with the help of scrolls, skills or items of Boots of Travel. In LoL every champion has an in-built ability to teleport to the fountain with a small recharge. The teleportation spell helps to fly back to the unity/tower in LoL, but with a bigger recharge.
Gold and creeps
Last-hitting in Dota 2 lets to get the enemy deprived of gold and even to earn it yourself since recently. In LoL there are no denies as the player cannot attack their units even if there are a few hitpoints. Also there is no hit points. ALso there is not anything like «reliable gold золото» in LoL. It is not lost in case of the player is dead. Also there are no runes in LoL, but instead of them there are additional camps of bid creeps which can result in a lot of experience and gold.
Fixed role division
In LoL, before the search of the match every player pots for a desirable role. There are five of them: a carry, an offlane, a jungler, a solo mid, and a support. Almost everything is the same as in Dota 2 but the jungle’s role is optional there and it depends on the patch. In LoL one of the player has to go farm in the forest. In the forest, by the way, there are bushes which give invisibility.
LoL is more demanding with new players. For instance, a new player can choose only a limited number of championships for the game. Every week the list of characters is changed. To choose unavailable champions, a player has to buy them for their in-game currency or real money.
Dota is harder and more demanding than LoL, the simplest example is that every item can be used as a spell etc. and in LoL it can't, there are many more mechanics in Dota than in LoL. If you compare LoL and Dota, Dota is a thousand times more difficult.
