The road to Bucharest — beastcoast
Yuriy SheremetThe calendar keeps rolling over, changing day by day, which brings us closer to the main and most expected event of the year — The International 10. We continue telling you about the road and history of the clubs, which will play at The International.
Today, we will finish with the representatives of South America, reviewing the first team of the region. It is beastcoast and this is their «Road to Bucharest».
beastcoast’s portfolio
Before moving to the history and directly to the road of beastcoast in Bucharest, we offer to learn about «the main places of power» of the South Americans. Let’s find out briefly about the main moments.
- The date of the club’s foundation: May 1, 2019;
- The roster on The International 10: K1, Chris Luck, Wisper, Scotfield, Stinger;
- The region: South America;
- How the team made it to The International: the 11th place in the DPC ranking;
- The main achievements: the 7th-8th place at MDL Chengdu Major and DreamLeague Season 13, the 1st place at OGA DPS South America Regional League Season 1: Upper Division, the 2nd place at OGA DPS South America Regional League Season 2: Upper Division.
The first contact is done, so we can move forward.
The first appearance
Despite beastcoast being the first team of the region in the season 2021, the club appeared way later than its countrymen from Thunder Predator and SG e-sports. Beastcoast missed the peak of the South American Dota scene, which took place in 2017-2018. The club entered the professional scene on May 1, 2019, but the most interesting thing is that the first roster had no players from South America.
In fact, beastcoast is from North America, despite the club location being in Peru now. The first roster included famous players who used to play under the tag TEAM TEAM: EternaLEnVy, Ryoya, Brax, tmt, ixmike88.
The main reason why the Peruvian team had no South American citizens was simple: TEAM TEAM qualified to MDL Disneyland Paris Major.
Definitely, the presence at such a large event is a strategic thing, so the management of beastcoast did the right thing. And it did not matter that the club completely failed in Paris, holding the last place in its group and losing to Complexity in the lower part of the bracket.
We are more interested in the moment, which has become the starting point for beastcoast in the story with a slot in The International. It happened on October 4, 2019.
Team Anvorgesa and the birth of the new heroes
In October 2019, beastcoast signed Team Anvorgesa, having parted ways with the North American roster. The updated roster included: K1, Chris Luck, Wisper, Scofield, and Stinger. These five will play at the main event of the year or even decade in Bucharest.
Having found a new house, the Peruvians who had already been famous and respected in their region, went to ESL One Hamburg. Beastcoast performed nicely in Hamburg: the Peruvians lacked only 1 point in the group stage to advance to the upper bracket and they even achieved victories in two series in the playoffs, one against Vici gaming, after which they lost to Alliance in a tough fight.
As soon as we have started, it is time to keep the level. The Majors are coming.
The Peruvian magic at MDL Chengdu Major и Dream League Season 13
MDL organized Chengdu Major in November 2019. Two teams from South America went to the tournament and beastcoast did not want to miss such an event.
They left no chances to their opponents in the regional qualifiers to MDL Chengdu Major. The Peruvians prevailed in the group stage without a chance, leaving no points to their rivals.
Beastcoast failed only once in the playoffs, in the final of the upper bracket against paiN Gaming. However, it made no impact on the hegemony of the Peruvians in the region — beastcoast went to the Major as the first team of South America.
The honor was big and the Peruvians wanted to prove that they were way stronger and more prospective than their North American predecessors. And they did it.
The second appearance of beastcoast at the Major was memorable. In Chengdu, the Peruvians got in one group with Invictus Gaming, J.Storm, and Gambit Esports.
Despite not being in the strongest group, the Peruvians failed to make it from the second place and guarantee a slot in the upper bracket. However, it was not their first start from the lows.
Beastcoast was lucky in the lower bracket too. In the first round, they played against Team Adroit, which was defeated without problems. In the following round, they competed against Fighting PandaS led by EternaLEnVy who used to play under the tag beastcoast not that long ago.
Having moved through the bracket, beastcoast faced Invictus Gaming, which had already beaten the Peruvians in the group. This time was not an exception, despite K1 with the company fighting well.
Beastcoast placed 7th-8th in Chengdu, which was the club’s best result achieved at the Majors. Beastcoast would repeat it two months later.
DreamHack organized the 13th season of DreamLeague in January 2021, it received the Major status this time. 2 teams also qualified from South America.
Beastcoast did not look like the absolute weapon from South America in the qualifiers to DreamLeague Season 13. They were outshined by paiN Gaming, which had been defeated by beastcoast in the past.
However, the personal match with paiN did not stop beastcoast from going to Sweden. And to protect the honor of the region.
Beastcoast had a way dangerous group at DreamLeague Season 13 than in Chengdu. Their opponents were Team Secret, Vici Gaming, and Chaos Esports Club. The Peruvians placed 3rd and the playoffs began with the lower part of the bracket for them again.
Beastcoast returned the debt to paiN in the first round, having sent the Brazilians back home. The Peruvians beat the vice-champions of TI9 in the face of Nigma in the second round and faced Invictus Gaming in the upcoming round.
The experience received in Chengdu was not enough. The Peruvians from beastcoast went home, holding the 7th-8th place.
The pandemic, the hibernation, and the beginning of the online era
The world struggled from the Covid-19 pandemic after DreamLeague Season 13. Dota 2 went online.
This scenario benefited the majority of teams, especially from South America, but not for beastcoast. Having built synergy at MDL Chengdu Major and DreamLeague Season 13, the Peruvians had to play with the highest-class teams. Beastcoast’s appetite could be satisfied only by the very few ones in South America.
During the online era, the Peruvians were demonstrating a pretty mediocre performance. The best results – the 4th place at OMEGA League: Americas Divine Division, Realms Collide: The Burning Darkness, and BTS Pro Series Season 4: Americas.
These results did not fit the team, which had entered the top 8 of the Major a few months before. Fortunately, the beastcoast's hibernation did not last long.
DPC-2021 and a slot at The International
Valve pulled out the competitive Dota scene from the state of anabiosis in 2021. The updated DPC system did not allow teams to play regional tournaments for fun. Now, they had to do their best, which made beastcoast happy.
In the first half of the year, the Peruvians found no equals at the in-region OGA DPC South America. Having placed first, they guaranteed them a spot at the Singapore Major – the first LAN event in one and half years. But COVID-19 stepped in.
The Peruvians were not able to get to Singapore due to quarantine restrictions. However, no one could take beastcoast’s 500 DPC points.
They tested their luck in the next season when they held the 2nd place in South America. And luck was not on their side.
Having placed second in the second DPC season, beastcoast went to WePlay AniMajor 2021 in Kyiv. Beastcoast held the 14th place there, having left the group stage in the last place.
In any case, 800 DPC points earned during the season was enough to make it to TI10 without going through the South American qualifiers.
After receiving a slot at TI, beastcoast played at ESL One Fall 2021 where they placed 5th-6th but it was not interesting. The main action will begin on October 7 when beastcoast will begin their performance at The International 10 in Bucharest.
