Diablo IV New Warlock Class Overview: Release Date, Abilities, Skins

On March 5, Blizzard hosted a Diablo IV livestream detailing the new class - the Warlock. It will arrive in the game with the release of the Lord of Hatred expansion. Below is a breakdown of its mechanics, skills, and features shown during the stream.
Diablo 4 Warlock Release Date
The planned release date for the new Warlock class is April 28, 2026. The release will take place simultaneously with the launch of the Lord of Hatred expansion. From this day on, all expansion owners will receive full access to creating a Warlock and will be able to start their playthrough with the new character.
Diablo IV Warlock Class Basics and Unique Resources
The Warlock is a caster specializing in summoning. They use demons and dark magic as tools to destroy their enemies. Class management is built around the balance of two unique resources, which are spent on different types of actions:
- Wrath: A traditional resource spent on casting basic class skills.
- Dominance: A special resource required exclusively for summoning demons and activating their abilities.
Proper management and restoration of these two power sources will be the main key to the Warlock's survival and effectiveness on the battlefield.
New Key Mechanics
The class brings a number of completely new effects and conditions to the game, which directly affect the combat system. Key terms players will have to work with:
- Hex: Increases Abyss skill damage taken by enemies. Effectiveness depends on the target's missing life and stacks up to 3 times.
- Eviscerate: Enemies under this effect instantly lose a portion of their Bleeding Life, after which they continue to take periodic damage.
- Shadowform: Grants the Unhindered effect. Any movement transitions the character into stealth but consumes stacks of the form.
- Demonform: Increases maximum health. While the form is active, killing enemies increases the damage of Demonology skills.
- Volatility: When using Hellfire skills, gives a chance to randomly empower them for the next cast.
Understanding and correctly combining these statuses will allow you to create powerful synergies and easily adapt to the behavior of various enemies.
Warlock Ability Arsenal

The Warlock's skill tree offers a variety of combat options, from direct damage to area control. Abilities are divided into several logical categories.
Basic Skills For starting a fight and initial resource generation, basic skills are used:
- Doom: Bursts a sigil on enemies, dealing damage and applying the Hex effect.
- Molten Bomb: Lobs volatile lava, dealing damage in a small area.
- Command Fallen: Summons a Fallen Lunatic that charges the target and explodes.
- Hellion Sting: A whip with a demonic tail with a chance to apply Eviscerate.
These skills form the foundation of the combat rotation and prepare enemies for more powerful attacks.
Core Skills The next group of abilities acts as the main source of damage:
- Bombardment: Smashes demons into the ground, dealing damage on impact.
- Blazing Scream: Sends forth a demonic skull, dealing damage along its path.
- Hell Fracture: Summons hellfire to fracture the ground with area damage.
- Dread Claws: Bursts forth shadowy claws.
- Umbral Chains: A shadowy chain that links enemies and deals damage.
Investing points in these skills will determine the main focus of your damage output.
Defensive Skills For survival in difficult battles, the developers have provided a number of defensive spells:
- Dark Prison: Creates a shadowy totem, tethering enemies to the area and preventing them from escaping.
- Tortured Wretch: Summons a tortured demon that Taunts enemies.
- Wall of Agony: Creates a barrier of frenzied demons that block the path and deal damage to enemies in front of them.
- Nether Step: Teleports to a target location, gaining Shadowform and a temporary speed boost.
Timely use of these skills is critically important for crowd control and avoiding lethal damage to the character.
Archfiend Skills To enhance combat potential, the Warlock can summon powerful creatures:
- Rampage: Summons a rampaging brute that smashes enemies with a chance to apply Eviscerate.
- Infernal Breath: A demonic head breathing fire over an area.
- Profane Sentinel: A demonic eye attacking enemies with a beam and applying Vulnerable.
- Tyrant's Grasp: A demon hand that pulls enemies towards you.
Archfiends provide reliable support, effectively distracting elite enemies.
Sigil Skills Zonal buffs are represented by a system of magical sigils:
- Sigil of Chaos: A destruction zone granting the Warlock the Volatility effect. Kills in the area increase the chance for enemies to explode upon death.
- Sigil of Subversion: A zone that applies Hex. Kills create shadow trails periodically granting Shadowform.
- Sigil of Summons: A ritual that extends the duration of summons. Kills summon additional demons.
Sigils require proper positioning in combat but offer significant tactical advantages in return.
Ultimate Skills The skill tree is completed by maximum power level abilities:
- Apocalypse: A massive sigil with a delayed detonation.
- Fiend of Abaddon: Summons a massive fiend to attack enemies.
- Terror Swarm: Summons an entity spewing a destructive swarm.
- Metamorphosis: (Details of the skill are currently not revealed).
Using ultimate skills has a long cooldown but can turn the tide of the most difficult battle.
Warlock Class Specialization: Soul Shard Fragments
Upon reaching level 30, a unique class mechanic unlocks. The Warlock must choose one of four Soul Shards, which will determine their playstyle and bind a specific demon to them. Available options:
- Legion Shard: Binds the Greater Demon Ae'gron. Focuses on summoning a multitude of lesser minions. Passive bonuses allow sacrificing minions for crowd control protection and empowering attacks on enemies with the Eviscerate effect.

- Vanguard Shard: Binds the demon Abodian. The playstyle is oriented towards close combat in Demonform. Archfiend skills receive additional effects, and attacks emanate fire, dealing damage to nearby enemies.

- Mastermind Shard: Binds the demon Laalish. Focuses on Shadowform, stealth, and damage from Abyss skills. Abilities allow executing weak enemies and increasing damage by consuming the Dominance resource.

- Ritualist Shard: Binds the demon Vollach. Allows siphoning the summon's lifeforce to increase the Overpower stat. Hex and Volatility effects become stronger and alter their mechanics.

Choosing a specific Soul Shard fundamentally changes the approach to the game, requiring the player to select equipment for specific tasks.
New Unique Items for the Warlock

With the release of the class, the developers will add a number of unique items to the game, specially adapted for the new mechanics. Currently, the following artifacts are announced:
- Anathema of the Primes: Core skills increase damage taken by enemies.
- Cage of Madness: Evade temporarily transforms you into a Lunatic, increasing speed and finishing with an explosion.
- Litany of Sable: Empowers the Dread Claws skill when gaining Shadowform.
- Cowl of Malefic Torment: The Doom skill deals damage over time to enemies with low health under the Hex effect.
- Lurid Pact: Every kill through Rampage increases the size of the summoned demon.
- Seal of the Ophanim: Empowers Profane Sentinel and summons an additional attacking eye.
- The Eightfold Idol: The Blazing Scream skill leaves elemental trails behind.
- Ae'grom's Schism: Grants a second charge to summon Ae'grom and increases its damage.
- Hellhound’s Sabatons: Empowers Abodian and links the hero to the demon with a fire chain.
- Rictus of Terror: Abyss skills execute enemies during the duration of the summon's ultimate skill.
This arsenal of equipment will significantly empower selected skills and open up new options for creating endgame character builds.
Diablo IV Warlock Lore and Class Quest
At level 15 in the city of Ked Bardu, a special class quest will become available - "Disciple of the Forbidden".
According to the game's lore, Warlocks are dark casters who bend the forces of Hell to their will. Their art originated in the Vizjerei clan, whose secret experiments with demonology once led to a civil war. The practice was outlawed, and the survivors were dubbed Warlocks. Today, they continue to study ancient seals, developing their willpower, knowledge of demonology, hellfire, and shadow magic. The return of Mephisto has become their main challenge, forcing them to step out of the shadows.
Lord of Hatred Pre-Purchase Rewards and Warlock Cosmetics

The developers have also revealed several exclusive cosmetic items to complement the release of the new Warlock class. Players who decide to pre-purchase the Lord of Hatred expansion will gain access to special rewards tailored for the dark aesthetic of Sanctuary. Depending on the chosen game edition, fans can unlock different tiers of thematic bonuses.
Owners of the Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred Ultimate Edition will receive early access to the first set of items. These specific rewards will become available starting March 11, alongside the release of Patch 2.6.0:
- Avel'hud, Nucleus of Perdition Reactive Back Trophy
- Embrace of Evil Town Portal
These early unlocks provide an opportunity to customize your characters with dark-themed visuals well before the expansion officially launches.
Furthermore, purchasing either the Deluxe or Ultimate Edition of the Lord of Hatred expansion grants additional items. When the new expansion officially launches on April 28, players will receive a dedicated cosmetic bundle specifically designed for the Warlock class:
- The Infernal Apostle Back Trophy
- Cross-Class Armor Bundle
Equipping these cosmetic additions ensures that your new Warlock will have a unique appearance right from the start of your journey.
