What is Solitaire?

Microsoft celebrated the 30th anniversary of the release of Solitaire in 2020. The game is currently regaining its popularity among young people and even older people who have given up the game for different reasons. To this end, Microsoft is investing in variations of Solitaire.

The idea behind Patience is to organise a pack of cards. To do this, there are rules to be respected, as in any game. So, the cards can't be sorted indiscriminately. On the contrary, every round has ways of drawing and fitting the cards together.

Also known as Solitaire, Classic Solitaire is a card minigame originally released for Windows operating systems. At the time, the card game was a hobby for anyone using computers with Microsoft's OS.

1. have a deck of 52 cards

To get started, you need a deck of 52 cards. Before you start, remember to remove the jokers. There are usually four jokers in traditional decks. To avoid problems, remove them before you start playing.

2. Shuffle the Cards

The idea of classic Solitaire is to sort the cards into columns and rows. To do this, the cards must be very messy. So shuffle the cards well before you start dealing them out in the next step.

3. Start dealing the cards

Face down, you need to deal the cards into seven columns. To do this, the first column, from left to right, starts with one card, the second with two cards and so on. After that, the last card on top of the others is revealed, making a diagonal.

4. Make the Pile and Card Fields Flexible

The draw pile is usually above the first column, from left to right. The four fields for placing the cards in order are above the first four columns, from right to left. Before you start playing, remember to respect the rules, which are detailed below.

Solitaire rules

The rules of Solitaire were created by an intern at Microsoft, who created the famous title between 1990 and 2000. The definitions are very easy and user-friendly. The most important part is moving the cards.

How to move the cards in Solitaire

You can move the cards in classic Solitaire in three scenarios. The first is to move between the columns of the game. In this case, you should consider some important points such as:

  • It is possible to move a card between columns if the card moved is of a different suit and of a lower value than the card above it.

Another possibility is to use the discard pile. In this case, you move the cards to the discard pile above the column. Here, we also consider the order of suit and card values. We almost always distribute the order of importance from left to right.

There is also the possibility of starting a new sequence when you reveal all the cards. In this case, the first card must be a King. It's worth noting that as long as it's a King, it doesn't matter what suit it is.

How Patience Buying Works

The draw pile is above the first column, the one that starts with a single card. When using the draw pile, you can move the card to the flexible card fields or place it in a column. If it can't be moved, it returns to the shopping pile face down.

How to set up the columns in Classic Solitaire

All games have their own rules and Solitaire is no different. To start the build-up, you need to move the cards between columns and the flexible card fields. If you want to win, the idea is to move and organise the cards in ascending order. You always start with the Ace up to the King.

Tips for Playing Classic Solitaire

Victory in Solitaire depends on being organised by suit and in the correct ascending order. If you want to achieve this result, it's worth checking out some of the tips we've put together and shown you below!

  • Always start by revealing the cards: by taking the card already revealed and placing it in another column or on the flexible cards, you reveal the card above. It's essential to do this in order to find all the cards;
  • Keep an eye out for cards that block you: keep an eye out for possible sequences, because if you run out of plays, it's over;
  • Use the flexible card piles: invest in rotating the cards and then try to retrieve them after revealing most of the cards in the columns.
