Patch 25.14 Preview for League of Legends: What to Expect in the Update
Patch 25.14 launches tomorrow — July 16, 2025. Developers shared details about the update and addressed popular matchmaking myths. They emphasized that “losers queue” doesn’t exist — the system doesn’t deliberately place players on losing streaks into weaker teams. Matchmaking only considers MMR and roles, ignoring honor level, number of pings, runes, or losing streaks.
New Champion Release — Yunara
The main highlight of the patch is the release of the new champion, Yunara. After a series of ability-focused ADCs (Smolder, Akshan, Samira), the team wanted to return to a more classic auto-attacking style. Yunara is designed to be a relatively simple yet deep champion, joining recent accessible releases like Milio, Smolder, Briar, Naafiri, and Mel. The key concept is her ultimate transformation, which emphasizes that traditional ADC power fantasy. Developers noted that not all of the initial ideas with her beads made it into the final version — some didn’t fit the aggressive theme — but they’re excited about the end result.
Item Changes
- Most attack speed items (except Yuntal) feel weak compared to the free attack speed provided by runes and boots.
- Lethal Tempo was brought back due to player demand, but balancing the issue will require another solution.
- Rod of Ages is getting a small buff: more AP and a stronger combo with Seraph’s will make it more appealing for Kassadin, Ryze, and Anivia.
- Catalyst will remain a solid situational choice for surviving tough matchups on champions like Viktor and Orianna.
Champion Changes
Dr. Mundo will remain unchanged this patch. Despite complaints about his “frustrating” gameplay, developers don’t see him as overpowered. He can be threatening with a good start but is often useless if shut down early. The expected buffs to Blade of the Ruined King should make counter-building against him more practical.
The patch will also include targeted buffs and nerfs for other champions. Special attention is on Riven, who was already planned for nerfs even before the viral clip of her killing Teemo under turret. She’s been performing too well, especially in the hands of skilled players. Developers also noted it was interesting to see how much discussion that video sparked in the community.
