The 2017 World Championship

The description of the 2017 World Championship
The 2017 League of Legends World Championship, usually referred to as Worlds, is a global eSports tournament. The top teams from across the globe struggle to win the World Championship prize. Venues for the championship are different every time and this time the event will take place in different locations all over China.
The dates
The 2017 World Championship starts with the Play-In Stage on September 23 and will come to the end with Finals on November 4.
The participants
Organizers have extended Worlds to allow the bigger number of rosters from various parts of the world to take part in the event. The distribution of slots by regions was made in the following way:
- Korea (LCK) - 3 slots
- China (LPL) - 3 slots
- Europe (EU LCS) - 3 slots
- North America (NA LCS) - 3 slots
- Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau (LMS) - 3 slots
- Southeast Asia (GPL) - 2 slots
- Brazil (CBLOL) - 1 slot
- Commonwealth of Independent States (LCL) - 1 slot
- Japan (LJL) - 1 slot
- Latin America North (LLN) - 1 slot
- Latin America South (CLS) - 1 slot
- Oceania (OPL) - 1 slot
- Turkey (TCL) - 1 slot
Innovations
The third slot has been given to the LMS as this region had shown stable and good results this year. Besides this, the GigaByte Marines received an additional slot for Southeast Asia because they had finished their participation in MSI.
As it was said above, the greatest number of teams will compete in the best LOL event this time. The more teams participate the more slots are given. Some regions had taken part in wildcard tournaments before. However, organizers have decided to give them slots to allow teams from their regions to go right to the main event of the championship. A trip to the tournament can be earned at regional qualifiers.
One more stage has been created to adapt the championship for the bigger number of teams. A Play-In Stage will be run before the group one. For the first time, it was used at the Mid-Season Invitational. This stage gives a chance to participants to win a slot at the Group Stage. You will have to reach the top four at the first stage to get to the following round.
The format
The 2017 League of Legends World Championship has been divided into three parts: a Play-In Stage, the Group Stage, and the Knockout Stage.
Play-In Stage
The Play-In is scheduled on September 23-26 and September 28-29. 12 contenders are divided into four groups. They will compete in Bo1 matches in a Double Round Robin format. According to their results, the best two rosters from each group will go to Round 2. There, the first and second slots face each other in a single Bo5 match to find out who gets to the Group Stage.
Group Stage
The Group Stage will be run on October 5-8 and October 12-15. 12 teams will be invited, according to their results before Worlds. These 12 participants will be joined by the four teams that fought their way through the previous part of the tournament. Altogether they will be distributed into four groups. Each one will include four rosters. Groups will play matches in a Double Round Robin, Bo1 format. The best two participants from each group will reach the Knockout Stage that is the final part of the event.
Knockout Stage
This stage will be carried out on October 19-22, October 28-29 and November 4. Eight teams will get to the third and the last stage of the championship. It includes the Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals. Matches will be run in the Bo5 format in a single-elimination bracket. The winner will earn a title of the champion of Worlds 2017.
