Match Prediction: OG - Gaimin Gladiators | Dota 2
DPC 2023 Tour 2: WEU Division I (Upper)The professional DPC season in 2023 is gaining momentum. Western Europe remains, in good tradition, the strongest and most interesting region of our time.
Day 5 of the second round of the DPC will be a showdown between the big clubs. OG and Gaimin Gladiators will clash in a head-to-head encounter.
The match is important due to the tournament position of the teams, and it also has a strong storyline. OG won the first major last season, while GG are the reigning major champions already this season. However, both clubs are off to a very timid start at DPC 2023: WEU Upper Division.
GG approach the match on the 3rd line of the table. The team has a 2-1 score, but is far from consistent and easy wins.
OG look even worse in their new run. The team is in 5th place, sharing it with the main outsiders of the race.
Let's try to figure out what to expect from the match: who will win, earn the necessary points and improve their standing in the standings.
GG Form
We begin the breakdown with an analysis of the Gaimin Gladiators' form. The reigning major champions are reckoned to be favourites.
Bookmakers believe in the success of GG. The odds of Seleri and company winning are at 1-3.
Looking ahead, the gap between the teams is big. Pre-match, the Gladiators actually have a three-fold advantage, and this is due to the banal performance, although even here everything is not so straightforward.
Gaimin Gladiators line-up
In the new season GG play in the same lineup, but with a completely different status. The team are now the world champions in the majors with all the attendant implications.

After winning the Lima Major 2023, GG have predictably become the number one target of the upper division. The team is being prepared with great relentlessness, and the performers (or some of them) seem to have caught the "star sickness", taking liberties with them and producing disastrous results.
We've already encountered the underestimation of opponents by Gaimin Gladiators this season. We've done so against the tournament's two underdogs, Ooredoo Thunders and Monaspa.
Gaimin Gladiators performance
GG finished the first season of Western Europe in second place. The team won 5 matches out of 7 thus securing their position.
In addition to DPC they played in outside tournaments. One of these was the BB Xmas Show where the gladiators tried out their new line-up. They did it tastefully, winning the grand final of those very Team Spirit.
The club then played the BB Universe - Comics Zone. This time they failed to repeat the success of Xmas Show: Team Spirit knocked out GG, leaving them in 3rd place.
Having qualified for the Lima Major 2023, they easily won the championship. After winning Group A the team was determined for the final play-offs.
The team had not lost a single card in the main stage of the Lima Major 2023. The Gaimin Gladiators easily defeated Team Aster, Entity and twice beat Team Liquid (in the top-seed and grand final).
The winning streak over the Liquid continued in the new DPC season. In the opening game of the second round, the Gaimin Gladiators shut out Team Liquid 2-0.
Next up, GG played against Ooredoo Thunders. What should have ended in a beating of OT turned into a 2-1 victory for the latter.
After Ooredoo Thunders, Gaimin Gladiators risked losing to another tournament underdog, the Greeks Monaspa. The match ended 2-1 in favour of GG, but the cards were certainly not easy to pick up.
Gaimin Gladiators Heroes
The most successful heroes are Treant Protector and Rubick (7 games and 77% of wins each).
Nature`s Prophet has also been chosen 9 times, but has "only" 55% of wins. Other frequent picks for Gaimin Gladiators are Lina (8 matches, 75% wins), Undying (7 matches, 85% wins), Broodmother, Puck and Batrider (6 matches, 83% wins).
OG Form
Let's move on to the breakdown of OG's playing form. In this game, the team is seen as an underdog.
It is hard to believe in a victory for the once major champions. Bookmakers put the odds of success at around 3.3.
With the current GGs barely coping with underdogs like Monaspa and losing to Ooredoo Thunders, OG had all the cards in hand. Not believing in the latter's success was provoked by the very sluggish play of Chu and company.
OG line-up
A key incident happened before the start of the second round. OG made a pinpoint substitution, the fruits of which are still being reaped.
OG players
- Yuragi
- bzm
- DM
- Taiga
- Chu
Chu's process of adapting to being a consistent performer has been thorny. Despite his experience as a player (Chu won ESL One Malaysia with OG), OG are unable to boast great team synergies.
However, OG's problems can also be attributed to the absence of Ceb on the coaching staff. The stellar Frenchman helped OG in their formative period last season, but has now decided to resume his career as a player and is playing in the close qualifiers for the second division himself.
It's hard to overstate the contribution of the two-time world champion, and the same Misha (now coach again) is more the brains of OG, but not the man to rally and strengthen the team spirit. All in all, it looks so-so.
OG performance
At DPC 2023: WEU Upper Division - Tour I OG finished 5th. The team played the regular season at 4-3.
The team defeated Entity, Secret, Gaimin Gladiators and Into The Breach on their way to the top 4 and lost to Tundra, Nigma and Team Liquid. That's how they got to the re-match.
In the round-robin replay, OG played against Tundra and Entity. Both OG and Entity lost twice, which ultimately kept them out of the Lima Major 2023.
In the first match of the new round, OG's opponent was Tundra. The same Tundra that failed at Lima Major 2023 beat OG 2-0 in their first home league match, but truth be told, OG had a chance on both cards.
The next match ended identically for OG, with no ghostly hopes. Liquid needed 37 minutes in the first and 29 minutes in the second to shut down their arch-rivals. "Liquid switched off Yuragi from the first card, driving them into maximum tilt, and Enigma via Guardian Greaves from DM was out of place.
Next, OG were close to a total collapse and 0-3 on the scoreboard, but were saved by TA2000. Ooredoo poured in on the first card in a way that a first tier team cannot afford, losing in 78 bloodbath, and then - floated, giving away the second card as well.
OG Heroes.
The most picked character is Rubick (8 matches, 50% wins).
Also took Lina (6 games, 83% wins), Treant Protector (6 games, 50% wins), Death Prophet (6 games, 33% wins), Tiny (5 games, 80% wins), Snapfire (5 games, 40% wins).
History of head-to-head encounters
Nominally the line-ups have not changed, and therefore we can remember the personal confrontation between the teams in the previous round. Then net victory was celebrated by OG.
Result
In this match we'll see a clash between two chaotic teams. Both GG and OG are not yet ready for the second round of the DPC.
In terms of play, I'm more impressed with GG. Their stodgy play against the weakest teams in the division (with the exception of Nigma) doesn't change the fact that GG won against Liquid, for example, while OG can only boast of an 80-minute clash against Ooredoo Thunders
I believe in a GG win, but I wouldn't be surprised if the OG card is given away. The odds are +1.5 on the latter.
Bottom line: +1.5 on OG.
