Heroic's Malta Misadventure: Shocking Elimination Reveals Cracks in Their Armor
Bogdan LashchenkoThe Danish team had a disastrous performance in Malta, which ultimately led to their failure to advance to the playoffs after suffering three consecutive series losses.
Monte managed to keep their hopes alive in Group B's Last Chance Stage at ESL Pro League. They secured a 2-1 series victory over Heroic (with map scores of 16-10 on Mirage, 20-22 on Overpass and 16-10 on Ancient), leading to Heroic's elimination from the tournament.
Throughout the series, the Danish team appeared uncharacteristically off their game, a trend that was noticeable in most of their matches during their time in Malta. Their level of play dropped significantly, and their usual consistency when facing teams in group stages seemed to have completely vanished.
The outcome was so unexpected for Casper "cadiaN" Møller's squad that this marked only the second time they were eliminated in the group stage since adding Jakob "jabbi" Nygaard to the roster in June 2022. The previous early exit occurred at IEM Cologne 2022, shortly after jabbii's addition, not including the BLAST World Final, where Heroic had to use a stand-in.
cadiaN's pre-tournament comments did not instill much confidence in the team's potential. The in-game leader expressed his concerns, stating that the team was not performing at the level they were supposed to and were capable of. He also mentioned a slight dip in individual form among the players, although he downplayed it as just a 1% or 2% difference. However, their performance in Malta suggested that the issues might run deeper, as Heroic struggled against teams ranked 22nd, 14th, and 11th, securing only one win against Rooster.
Following their match, Viktor "sdy" Orudzhev and Sergiy "DemQQ" Demchenko commented on Heroic's performance compared to previous encounters. Both players acknowledged that the Danes did not play at their usual level. sdy noted that Heroic had previously outplayed them, especially on their CT side, but this time, they couldn't feel the same level of dominance.
The first map, Mirage, showcased Heroic's lack of cohesion, despite initially taking the lead. Monte mounted a comeback, and their strong CT side allowed them to secure a 16-10 victory.
On Overpass, Heroic also started strongly but began losing rounds as Monte gained momentum. sdy's pivotal 2v5 play shifted the tide in Monte's favor, helping them reach map point at 15-14. However, a mishap with pistols allowed Heroic to force overtime and extend the series to a third map.
Ancient witnessed a return to form for Heroic, albeit too late. They struggled with timing and disadvantageous situations, allowing Monte to claim a 16-10 victory and secure a spot in the Last Chance Stage final. In the final, Monte would face the winner of the MIBR vs. Evil Geniuses match, competing for a spot in the EPL playoffs.
