The Most Famous Cheaters in the Esports History
Yuriy SheremetCheaters have always been a cancerous tumor of any game. They create problems for regular players but some even try to go a bit further and compete at esports competitions. It is very risky because there is an unofficial rule among players: «If you have violated the rules, you will have to receive a permanent ban in the disciplines».
MSI Gaming Arena 2019 or how the team of «schoolboys» eliminated professional players
The event was carried out a long time ago but it is still remembered. That’s not surprising because according to the experts, not a few people but 2 teams were accused of using cheats. And it is a serious blow to the reputation of MSI. Definitely, when your prize pool is equal to 60,000$, you should treat the questions regarding unfair play more seriously.
In fairness, it is worth noticing that the majority of attention was paid to the team Raregods. It had managed to become famous for its controversial moments in the esports field. It was criticized both by pro players and critics and regular players.
Everything started with the moment when the team began beating its opponents easily and, having left Syman Gaming and pro100 behind, it advanced to compete for a slot in the main event against Gambit Youngsters. At the same time, social networks were on fire, especially Twitter. It was full of clips with strange blind shots, lucky coincidences, etc.
The player with the nickname Keoz made a special impact, he did not just publish his clip but reviewed all the controversial moments. Definitely, the player with such an experience can provide such thoughts. «You are really lucky sometimes and have the feeling but it was working without mistakes in this case...», - Keoz commented on the situation.
The match against Syman Gaming, in theory, could be justified by «luck» but the match against pro100 surprised everyone, to say the least. Everyone was angry, including Western players, CIS players, and even regular viewers. What is more, ESL, which was responsible for the event, did not organize an additional investigation. It seems that they were too confident about their anti-cheat. It proved itself very well but cheaters always keep moving forward.
It may sound funny but the results of the tournament were official and, consequently, money bets could be made on it. Someone made money on Raregods having a sarcastic smile, while someone was trying to bring resonance to ESL.

Happy end… or not after all
In a way, justice has prevailed but less than it should be. During the match against Gambit Youngsters, the admin joined the game and disqualified the whole team. But! It was disqualified not for using the forbidden software but for playing with a minor player.
The esportsman with the nickname A1mFlex was just 13, which was 3 years less than the minimum age to participate in the tournament. The team, of course, tried to defend him and stated that he was «15, almost 16» but it was a bad argument. The team was banned, their opponents proceeded further. Everything seemed to be fine.
However, in fact, the team Raregods were not considered to be cheaters and it means that they still can stay in esports and take part in tournaments. The organizer responded to the situation with a big delay but not without the help of insiders and active players. The public resonance made its impact.
The adventures of Ruthless at MGA 2019
We have dealt with the previous team, so we can now pay time to their less famous mates. They received the main pack of hate after the team OneWay published an angry post on their official group, which stated clearly that the organizers and ESL ignored violations.
Then, the screenshots of messages were leaked, the members offered someone called Denis «an opportunity» to proceed to HLTV. To do so, he had to provide his account in the match with cheaters. What is more, this information was revealed directly and after his refusal and the screenshot leaks, Denis started receiving threats. He recorded a video but decided not to publish it to use it for his protection.
Jontha was also involved in solving the conflict. According to his statement, he had direct contact with the administration and asked for proof of all controversial moments to make the responsible persons meet the consequences.
Ending and the reasons for using cheats
It appeared that the reason for everything was a simple thirst for profit. The plan is simple and easy to realize: bet on yourself and receive profits with the help of software. It was proved by the team OverDrive, which leaked the information that Raregods tries to sell their slots on HLTV for 200 dollars or 15.000 rubles.
Then, there was the information that both teams had been involved in such a fraud for a long time.
Ruthless was banned for the former cheater in the team. There is no sense in talking about their reputation. But the most ridiculous thing about it is that the organizers ESL are still staying silent. In fact, the whole investigation was done by the community. Justice was partially restored.
Technically, the use of cheats by both teams is not proved. So there are a few options:
- Thousands of people hated the young team for nothing.
- Frauds earned good money on the indifference of ESL and MSI.
You can make your own conclusion. However, to be honest, all facts point at both teams’ guilt.
