It's not CSGO: 6 CS2 biggest problems

On 27 September 2023, Valve released Counter-Strike 2. The event is massive in several parallels: firstly, it is Valve's first game release since Half-Life: Alyx, and secondly, it is the company's new flagship and the future of esports.

CS:GO

The game became a success, there is no argument in that. During September an unprecedented number of players played CS2. As many as 31 million users got acquainted with Valve's new brainchild. The figure is really impressive, but, as it often happens, there was a spoon of tar in the honey barrel. And in the case of Counter-Strike 2, the concentration of tar is quite significant.

CS2 is a game with an exciting potential, but now it is in need of improvement. In this article we'll tell you about the main problems of Valve's new flagship game, which spoil the impression of the legendary title, as well as the reasons for the roughened Long Shot for the new shooter.

Problem #1 - CS2 is less smooth than its predecessor CSGO

It's not CSGO: (number) of CS2's biggest problems 1

The first thing a player who has previously spent time in CSGO encounters when playing CS2 is a feeling of "sluggishness". Counter-Stirke 2 is a less fluid game than CSGO was. Such a feeling spoils the impression of the game and clearly discourages. But the business card of the new part of the legendary shooter was Valve's updated engine - Source 2.

So far CS2 lags behind CSGO in terms of "smoothness". The possible reason is that CS2 is GPU-oriented, which leads to much higher loads on the hardware.

A possible way to fix the "viscous" feeling would be to adjust NVIDIA settings, namely NVIDIA reflex, but it is better to do it by the developers themselves. I'm sure VALVE have heard about the "viscosity" problem of their new flagship and are already working on its solution, because leaving everything as it is in a game released in 2023, and so loud - not a solution.

Problem #2 - CS2 is much more demanding on the hardware and loses in the number of frames

It's not CSGO: (number) of CS2's biggest problems 2

CSGO's unique selling proposition has always been its affordability. The game launched and even worked well on very outdated hardware, allowing everyone to plunge into the atmosphere of team battles in the legendary FPS-shooter. With the second part of CS things are worse.

Obviously, Counter-Strike 2 is more demanding, if only because of its novelty. Still, the game was released this year, and the predecessor appeared in 2012. Nevertheless, the problem of accessibility needs to be solved.

CS2 runs on Source 2 engine, the game itself has much more details, and it's better drawn, hence the frame loss. I realise that water physics and falling leaves are beautiful things, but that's not the point of CS. The point is tactics, teamwork and competition, not the beauty of graphics.

And okay, the game looks more refined and modern, but even on strong by the standards of 2023 machines, there are absolutely incomprehensible lags and frame rate drops. Perhaps it's due to the aforementioned curvature of the NVIDIA reflex technology and Valve are already working on optimising CS2. Still, a lot of work has been done since the beta, but there is still a lot of work to be done.

Problem #3 - subticks in CS2 and the feeling of "no shooting"

The announcement of Counter-Strike 2 was accompanied by incredible hype. At last the servers with tikreit 128 appeared in the game, but the reality turned out to be different. In CS2 they really reworked the system of tikreit and abandoned the standard value of 64, which burned a lot of nerves of CSGO players, in favour of the so-called "subticks". And this movement is in the right direction, but in practice such shooting mechanics causes a lot of dissonance.

The thing is that in CS2, unlike in CSGO, mouse click registration and shot animation are not synchronised as they were in CSGO. This leads to the fact that a hit is often counted when visually it looks like there was a miss.

This is another stone against CS2 and its "smoothness". Although technically, subticks are more accurate, because the game registers the shot after the mouse click, without synchronisation with the animation of the shot itself, it all looks very strange.

Problem #4 - Lack of familiar console commands and lack of "statistics"

It's not CSGO: (number) of CS2's biggest problems 3

CS2 has stepped forward in terms of UI and other conveniences. The main menu became more modern, in the match added animations when changing sides. Stylish blackout on the shopping phase and that's about it. Cool! Only until you realise that the game doesn't have the option to hold a weapon in your left hand.

Obviously this is a Minor issue and will definitely be fixed in the next patches, but is it so technically difficult to add the ability to change hands on Long Caper? It seems to me no.

In addition to the aforementioned lack of the ability to change hands, the game lacks a number of familiar CS:GO aspects. For example, after death it doesn't show how much damage you did to your opponent, which is quite annoying.

These little things together only add to the feeling of underdevelopment. But the game was tested for more than three months.

Problem #5 - Cheaters, Cheaters, Cheaters

Cheaters and FPS-shooters. Name more iconic duo - I'll wait.

Where Counter-Strike 2 definitely does not lag behind its predecessor CSGO is in the matter of cheaters. Everything is the same here, but there is nothing to be surprised about.

When announcing Counter-Strike 2, Valve talked about all its charms: the game is off-ticker (almost 128, but not quite), new smoke mechanics, improved maps, sound design and inventory transfer from CSGO. And it seems, not a word about the new anti-chit. And the problem is really acute, otherwise professionals wouldn't complain about the abundance of cheaters.

Apparently, by such methods they are trying to raise the rating in matchmaking. By the way, CS 2 mods and modes are another Achilles' heel of the game.

Problem #6 - lack of variety in CS2

At release, CS2 received several modes that are classic to the series. However, compared to CSGO, there are fewer of them. At the time of writing, the following modes are available for play in CS2:

  • Deathmatch
  • Classic Casual
  • Wingman
  • Classic Competitive
  • Premier Mode

It seems that there is a lot to do, but it's not quite true. In fact, the only playable mode is Premier Mode with an updated ranking system, which is worth talking about separately. The other modes are either not popular (the search in Classic Competitive Mode lasts at least 4 minutes on "Kalash" ranks), or severely truncated (a number of maps are missing).

At release, the game did not have Arms Race, Demolition, and Flying Scoutman modes. There were and are no custom maps and no Danger Zone.

In general, it feels that CS2 was made in a hurry, because with a lot of problems the game doesn't even have the same number of mods and modes as CSGO.

What do professionals say about CS2?

All of the above CS2 problems are very real. Perhaps, some of them are exaggerated because of subjective judgement, but I'm not the only one who notices them. A large number of players complain about the unplayability of CS2 and its lagging behind its predecessor.

In addition to the above-mentioned ropz, other professionals also speak negatively about CS2. Among them is Snappi. The captain of ENCE is quite categorical: "Now it's a bad game: there is tikreit 64, a lot of problems, and CS2 itself came out prematurely". However, the ENCE leader realises that his job requires playing CS2 and he has to improve in a really new game despite his dissatisfaction with some of its aspects.

And professionals have no choice. Neither do ordinary players.

CS2 perspectives

CS2 will completely replace CSGO, whether you like it or not. It was clear on the day of release, 27 September, when CS2 became available to all players. CS 2 has completely replaced CSGO, leaving the latter on the sidelines of history. It's pretty sad, but it's a fact: CSGO is the only version from the legendary franchise now unplayable. It's not exactly clear why Valve did this particular thing. Perhaps they were afraid that their new brainchild would look weaker against the backdrop of the time-tested CSGO. Or maybe it's aggressive marketing. Here we can only guess.

The only thing that is clear already now is the transition to the new version. The leading tournament operators are gradually switching to CS2. ESL has already announced the first major championship on the new version of the game - IEM Sydney 2023. Also tournaments of ESL Challengers series will be played on Counter-Strike 2. The Faceit platform is keeping up with the trend and has also added CS2 to the platform. Bottom line. There will be a lot more to come, and hopefully by the time CS2 ѕtunet ѕtupndart еѕроrtѕa, Valve will polish their new flagship and allow players to get the same emotions as CSGO.
