Is there a cross-platform in Red Dead Online?
perepelovskyThe latest big update for Red Dead Online was released a few years ago. Since then, the company Rockstar Games has released a few cosmetic patches and made insignificant changes to its multiplayer. There is full confidence that the developers have forgotten about Red Dead Online and they are unlikely to support the online add-on with new big content.
After all, multiplayer still has its special player base who enter the game daily in search of beautiful landscapes and the atmosphere of the end of the 19th century.
The question is whether Red Dead Online is cross-platform. And does multiplayer allow players on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation to dive into the Wild West world at the same time?
Red Dead Online is a multiplayer DLC for Red Dead Redemption 2. The multiplayer works in a similar manner to GTA Online providing players with an opportunity to unite in teams or fight each other, using the Wild West setting as a perfect cowboy platform.
What is happening with Red Dead Online now?
Despite the nice launch of Red Dead Online, it turned out to be a disappointment for millions of fans in the end. By 2022, the platform was abandoned and the developers from Rockstar Games almost refused to release any significant content for the game.
However, fans created a petition called “#SaveRedDeadOnline” at the beginning of 2022, which was addressed to the developers. Fans of the series asked Rockstar Games to save their creation from imminent death, to which Red Dead Online was slowly coming.
Of course, these efforts led to nothing, the developers released an incredibly fun update in the summer, in which they added a few small events and bonuses.
Any updates that were released in Red Dead Online over the past few years were mainly pointless, events repeated, and the world was the same as it was after the release of the DLC.
Some fans might think that adding cross-platform to Red Dead Online could save the series. But it seems that the developers have the opposite opinion and they do not want to invest efforts into a popular western game.

So is there cross-platform in Red Dead Online?
At the moment of writing the material, there is no cross-platform in Red Dead Online. It means that players from different platforms, like PC or Xbox, can’t meet in one session. However, if one player buys the add-on on Steam for PC and his friend, for example, buys Red Dead Online on Epic Store, they will be able to play together without problems.
The fact is that two years have passed since the release of PS5 and we have not seen an update for Red Dead Redemption 2.
The demand for cross-platform games was becoming way bigger in recent years because players want to have an opportunity to play with their friends on another platform. But, unfortunately, Rockstar Games did not consider it for Red Dead Redemption 2.
But never say never. The developers from Rockstar Games might decide to please Red Dead Redemption fans after the release of GTA 6 and will start developing Red Dead Online with full force. However, this scenario is unlikely to happen.
Probably, we will not see cross-platform in Red Dead Online. The reason is not just Rockstar Games’ laziness but the apparent reluctance of platform holders to share profits. For example, Sony has always treated an opportunity to play on different devices negatively.
The reasons for the absence of cross-platform in Red Dead Online are as follows:
- Possible technical issues with the implementation of the function
- Changes of certain gameplay elements, which will require additional configuration
- Problems with legal issues for concurrent play on different platforms
- The different services of network connection in Microsoft and Sony
However, relying on the experience of GTA Online, it is unlikely that Rockstar Games is planning to unite players from different platforms. Yes, cross-platform is not typical for the developers. This is a usual situation for the games made by Rockstar Games. So it is not worth expecting that this function will appear in Red Dead Online soon.
