How to Get a Map in Hollow Knight: Silksong – Your Guide to Navigating Pharloom

When starting Hollow Knight: Silksong, players face a small problem — there is no map available. To navigate Pharloom without getting lost, you’ll need to collect Rosaries and purchase one from a vendor in The Marrow. Similar to the system in Hollow Knight, this NPC offers not only maps but also additional tools for exploration, including the Compass, Quill, and various Map Markers. In this blog, we’ll cover how to get a map in Hollow Knight: Silksong and which items are worth picking up first to make navigation easier.
Where and How To Get a Map in Hollow Knight: Silksong
To get a map in Hollow Knight: Silksong, you’ll need to make your way to The Marrow — the second major area of the game. The journey begins in Moss Grotto, where you must first defeat the Moss Mother to unlock the path to Bone Bottom. From there, head to the right until you reach Sharma and the large Bone Gate. You can bypass it from above by climbing higher and opening it from the other side, then continue moving to the right.

In the next room, you need to climb to the upper right corner, then move upward and to the left until you reach a large chasm. Along the way, you’ll pass the Flea Caravan. Once you reach the upper left corner of this area, continue moving left. In the following room, you’ll have to jump across the bells and keep heading left until you hear singing. This is where you will encounter Shakra for the first time.
After the warrior-cartographer introduces herself, she will offer a selection of goods in exchange for Rosaries. Among them will be the first maps: the Mosslands map can be purchased for 40 Rosaries, while the Marrow map costs 50.

If you find yourself short on Rosaries, you can always take some time to explore the surroundings and collect more. Enemies drop them upon defeat, and some can be found in hidden caches. For example, there is a secret room just above the Flea Caravan containing 24 Rosaries. Once you purchase a map, you’ll be able to open it using the left bumper, and a new Map tab will appear in the status menu, showing not just your current location but the entirety of the areas in Pharloom you’ve explored so far.
Shakra and Other Mapping Tools

In addition to maps, Shakra offers several useful tools that make exploring Pharloom much easier. It’s best to purchase these early on to help with navigation and to gradually fill out your map with new details.
The Compass is a yellow tool that shows Hornet’s current position on the map, but it only works while equipped. Price: 70 Rosaries.
The Quill is a passive item that automatically updates the map with new details each time Hornet rests at a bench. Price: 50 Rosaries.
Bench Pins mark all discovered benches on the map with a unique icon. Price: 60 Rosaries.
Shell Markers can be placed manually at any point on the map, making them useful for noting obstacles or areas you plan to revisit later. Price: 40 Rosaries.
Where to Get More Maps in Silksong
At the start of the game, Shakra will be the main way to acquire maps for new areas, but she is not the only source. For example, at the beginning of Act 2, Hornet can discover a map of a new zone directly on a signpost. Don’t forget to also make use of fast travel to speed up your exploration. And if you are not yet familiar with the Fast Travel System in Hollow Knight: Silksong, this short guide will help you deal with the basics. While exploring uncharted territories, keep an eye out for key items in the environment and always listen for Shakra’s singing — it will lead you to more maps in Silksong.
