Everything you need to know about Worlds 2023: tournament schedule, venues, tickets, participants
Yuriy SheremetThe premier tournament of the modern League of Legends in 2023, Worlds 2023, promises to be a canonical spectacle. Riot Games have squeezed the maximum out of the championship and have already started preparations for this year's tournament, which will take place from 10 October to 19 November in South Korea.
The 2023 Worlds stanuput is not only a close battle at the pinnacle of the discipline's best players, but also the location of the tournament, namely South Korea. Simply put, South Korea is the epicentre and powerhouse of League of Legends: the world's strongest teams such as T1 and reigning world champions DRX live and play here and the love of LoL is absolute.
However, the upcoming Worlds 2023 will also be iconic because of the format changes and the innovations from Riot. Here's the main thing you need to know about the biggest tournament of the year:
Worlds 2023 schedule
Worlds 2023 will take place in Autumn, from October 10 to November 19 in South Korea and will be divided into several stages with a break in between: Play-In, Swiss Stage, Knockout Stage and Finals. Worlds 2023 will visit two cities and four venues in total.
Stage | Date | Venue | Location |
Play-In | 10-15 October | Seoul | LoL Park |
Swiss Stage | 19-29 October | Seoul | KBS Arena |
Knockouts | 2-12 November | Busan | Sajik Gymnasium |
Finals | November 19 | Seoul | Gocheok Sky Dome |
It's worth noting that the last time the Worlds series tournament visited Korea was in 2018. Back then, Invictus Gaming took a lightning win, defeating Europe's Fnatic in the grand final.
Worlds 2018 was a real shock for local teams, as LCK representatives failed to qualify for the top 4 of the tournament, with the best result being a top 8 for KT Rolster with Deft in the line-up.
The LCK residents will be avenging the wrongs of the past in a new format. Let's take a closer look at it!
Format for Worlds 2023
For the first time in the series' history, Worlds 2023 will feature the "Swiss" group stage system, which has been used for several years in CS:GO Major tournaments. In addition, for the first time ever, the championship will receive a Worlds Qualifying Series qualifier, which will kick off the year's main tournament.
The Worlds Qualifying Series will host the Top 4 teams from the LEC and LCS schedule. The winner of a single bo5 match will go to the Play-In (8 in total) where they will join 4 teams from PCS and VCS and 3 from CBLOL, LLA and LJL.
At the end of the Play-In, 2 teams advance to the next stage. They join the 14 members of the Swiss Stage, starting the battle to qualify for the Knockout Stage.
The team with 3 wins in the Swiss Stage advances to the next round. The team with 3 defeats will drop out of the tournament.
Knockout Stage - Worlds 2023 main stage. The top eight teams will battle it out to be the world's strongest team in a Single-Elimination format with boo5 games.
All participants in Worlds 2023
Along with changes to the Worlds 2023 format, the number of participants has also changed, as well as the procedure for selecting them to Worlds. Instead of 24 teams last year, the League of Legends Worlds 2023 will see 22 teams.
