Esports news Victory Five
In brief:
The Chinese region was always famous in the competitive League of Legends for its scale and level of play of local teams. LPL is the biggest continental league, which includes 17 residents and a place, which bright the esports League of Legends environment 3 world champions: Invictus Gaming in 2018, FunPlus Phoenix in 2019, and EDward Gaming in 2021.
There are serious battles inside the region and the prize pool is a record for all regional leagues: about ~600,000 dollars are up for grabs each season, which makes different teams enter the race.
Victory Five was one of the regular residents of the Chinese League of Legends. Until 2022, the team was competing for leadership in the region.
V5 has not achieved victories in international tournaments but entered the list of the most colorful teams in the Chinese region.
The history of appearance
The club Victory Five was created as the project of the billionaire Stanley Ho’s son Mario Ho. Macau is considered to be a homeland for Victory Five.
The club joined the LPL ecosystem in November 2017. Riot Games announced the expansion of the large competitive track and the addition of two teams to LPL: the LDL champions and Victory Five.
The first attempts: Victory Five in the 2019 season
Despite the club receiving a slot to compete in LPL at the end of 2017, the team became an active resident of the titled Chinese league in 2019. The spring split of 2019 was the debut tournament for Victory Five in the LPL track.
The starting roster for LPL Spring 2019 included Jinoo, Ben4, Corn, y4, and LeY. The young V5 roster could not boast of significant achievements and multi-year experience of performing for the titled clubs: y4 and Ley who used to play for Royal Never Give Up before moving to Victory Five were the most experienced ones in the Chinese stage.
Due to the absence of loud names under the V5 tag and the big regional competition after the victory of IG at Worlds 2018, Victory Five failed to show a decent play at the first split.
The team failed the group stage of the spring tournament, having won only 4 maps out of 15. This performance led the club to 13th place in LPL Spring 2019 and further roster changes, which did not bring the club success.
A few months later, V5 played at LPL Summer 2019. The team managed to improve the result but with minimal advancements: V5 placed 12th at LPL Summer 2019, having finished the tournament in the group stage with a result of 5-10.
The following stagnation and solutions to problems
After the end of the unfortunate 2019, Victory Five entered the new season with new hopes and ambitions. Unfortunately for the club management, they faced the cruel reality of the Chinese region and the local competition.
Victory Five did not win a single series in LPL Spring 2020. The team failed the spring split, having finished its performance as the last team, which launched the process of roster changes.
In the summer of 2020, V5 revealed the reimagined roster. It had to solve problems of the previous roster, namely, to create V5’s play.
The roster included Biubiu, Weiwei, Mole, Samd, and ppgod. Mole, who used to play for Bilibili Gaming and Edward Gaming, became a leader of the roster.
Changes were significant and Victory Five became dangerous for their competitors. It was notable in the performance of the Macau club in the regional season.
The team finished the regular season 5th, which was the peak result in two seasons. They were one victory away from advancing to the second playoff round but the minimum goal was achieved: Victory Five made it to the main stage of LPL.
V5 managed to beat the 2019 champions FunPlus Phoenix there but they finished their road in the summer LPL in the next round, having lost to Suning with a score of 1-3. The top 5 in the local league hinted at the possible rise of F5 in future championships, but the reality turned out to be less rosy.
In 2021, Victory Five returned to its roots, namely, losing everything and everywhere. The best result of the season was the top 8 at NEST 2021, a local tournament where titled clubs play with test rosters, using mainly the academy roster players.
In LPL 2021, V5 beat its 2019 antirecord: the team placed 12th in spring, having played the regular season with a score of 6-10 and the penultimate place at LPL Summer 2021, having performed with a result of 0-16. Such a performance led F5 to familiar mistakes: the team began reassembling its roster and preparing for the start of the 2022 season.
The first success of V5 in LPL and the merger with NiP
Victory Five revealed a refreshed roster at the start of the new competitive season. The team invited Rich, Karsa, Photic, and ppgod.
The core of the new roster was formed from the former members of Top Esports, which had already become respected in the 2020 season, but all the attention was focused on the South Korean legionnaire Rookie. The former member of Invictus Gaming and the 2018 world champion adapted to the new team without problems, which led to an improvement in performance.
During the group stage of LPL Spring 2022, V5 demonstrated the highest level of play, which suited the new rosteR: they lost only 2 matches out of 16 in the regular season and held first place confidently before the start of the playoffs. They looked strong on the main stage but reached only the top 3.
After losing to TOP Esports in an epic match with a reverse sweep, Rookie and the company stepped down to the lower part of the bracket where they outplayed JD Gaming but lost to Top Esports again later. The team finished LPL Spring 2021 in 3rd place.
V5 almost repeated the result of the group stage of the spring split in the summer of the same year, missing only 1 victory: the team finished 3rd in the regular season and advanced to the playoffs. It was less lucky there: the loss to LNG ended Victory Five’s performance in the top 6.
Victory Five’s last attempt to make it to the top of the competitive League of Legends was the regional finals in 2022. V5 tried to proceed to the top 2 there but they failed: LPL Regional Finals 2022 was over for V5 with the 4th place and missing Worlds.
V5 finished in 4th place at the final Chinese tournament. The club had to make it through the merger with Ninjas in Pyjamas.
The European club announced its intentions to return to the competitive League of Legends in August 2021 when it announced its cooperation with the Chinese company ESV5, which owned the LoL Victory Five team. They managed to realize the plan in 2023, having received V5’s slot in the continental LPL league.
How much Victory Five earned
Founded in 2017, the team has reached prize places at 10 tournaments. Over this time, the League of Legends team made 104,732 dollars.
The sum is 61 of the club’s overall earnings. The second place after the League of Legends team is held by the PUBG squad, which brought the club ~50,000 dollars or 29% of the organization’s overall earnings.
