Should you trust the Hot Numbers when playing live roulette?
Bogdan LashchenkoIf you've never heard of this practice, this article will interest you. The use of hot numbers is fairly widespread and familiar to experienced players. It involves placing bets on the numbers that have appeared most frequently in previous rounds.
But is it really? Is this a good strategy for winning at roulette? Or is it simply a belief that should be treated with caution? Answers and explanations to follow.
Did you say Hot Numbers?
If you've never played Hot Numbers before, why not give the technique a try by clicking here. Hot Numbers are based on the idea that a recently released number is more likely to win in subsequent rounds.
For example, if you see in the game statistics that the numbers 10, 15 and 29 have come up three times, you're going to place them in the Hot Numbers and consider betting on them to be a winning strategy. Well, why not? But where did this idea come from, and who launched this hypothesis?
Live, at the heart of the issue
Nobody knows when this technique first appeared. However, there is a plausible hypothesis to explain the appearance of Hot Numbers on live roulette games. One hypothesis is that each croupier has his own way of throwing the ball onto the cylinder. As he practices, his throw will not change. As a result, the ball is likely to land in the same squares.
Hot Numbers would be a sort of predictable signature of the croupier, different depending on the professional officiating at the table. A regular player could benefit from this.
The second explanation concerns the player's beliefs. There is a fallacy that an independent event becomes more probable if it has not happened for a long time or less probable if it has happened recently. I don't see why not. On the other hand, roulette is a pure game of chance and the results are random at each spin.

What about Hot Numbers?
What if the principle of Hot Numbers was just another form of entertainment for the player, without any basis or reality? Following the theory of probability, it is important to note that the European version of roulette with a single zero presents equal chances for each number on each spin.
No past event changes the odds for future spins. Consequently, the Hot Numbers theory cannot be considered a reliable method for increasing your chances of winning.
Roulette martingales
On the other hand, you can play by applying a technique known as a martingale. These strategies are designed to increase your chances of winning at roulette. There are many martingales, here are the main ones.
Classic martingale This is the simplest and also the best known, also known as Hawks' martingale. The idea is to double your bet every time you lose a bet, without adding an extra unit to your bet. For example, you bet €1 on red and lose, so you bet €2 on red on the next round. This technique is only valid for Red Black, Even, Odd, Miss and Pass bets.
The great martingale
This is a variation of the previous one. It consists of doubling your bet every time you lose, plus an extra unit. Let's go back to the example for the classic martingale. You bet €1 on red and you lose. You must then bet €2 (+ an additional bet according to the table of bets for the roulette game you are playing) on red in the next round.
The Piquemouche martingale
Another variation on the classic martingale. This time, you don't double your bet after a loss, but only after three consecutive losses.
The sawtooth martingale
This roulette strategy is designed to limit losses. You bet only on the simple chances (Red, Black, Even, Odd, Miss and Pass), then increase your bet by 1 each time you win. When you lose, you decrease your bet by one.
The table below gives you the names of other martingales used by players:
Paroli | Bet on a single chance and leave the winnings on the table after each winning move |
D'Alembert | Increase the bet by one after each loss and decrease it by one after each win |
Fibonacci | Follow the Fibonacci sequence 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc, and go back 2 rows after each winning move. |
Labouchère | Follow a sequence of numbers defined in advance by adding the sum of the first and last terms each time. |
As you can see, betting on Hot Numbers is not a strategy in itself. You can try martingales, but there's no guarantee that you'll win. So it's best to think of the game as entertainment, not as a way to get rich.
