Overview of the new Dota 2 hero Muerta: Character history, abilities, talents and links to other heroes
Yuriy SheremetOn the night of March 7, patch 7.32e was released in Dota 2. In addition to the rebalancing of annoying characters, recalibration of items and a new minigame, a new character, Muerta, was added to the game.
Muerta's appearance on Battle of the Ancients was the main infomercial for the long-awaited update. There hasn't been a new character in Dot for over a year and it's about time to get a closer look at the fresh hero.
Muerta's history
As expected, Muerta is closely tied to the folklore of Spanish-speaking countries, mainly Mexico. Muerta's real name is Celeste.
The girl lived in the town of Skirm, plagued by the raids of bandits led by Zell-a. One day, Zell's gang once again stole from the citizens of Skirm and stripped them of all their livelihood, a move which Celeste didn't agree with.
Celeste decides to defend the townsfolk by challenging the leader of the bandits to a duel. The duel was a foregone conclusion, with Zell sneakily shooting Celeste four times in the back. The woman is sent to the afterlife, but her journey is not over.
She is now at peace with Bone King, the lord of the afterlife. The otherworldly lord invited Celeste to play a game, and if she wins, he will grant her wish.
Celeste agreed to Death's wager and outplayed him in a card game (played, by the way, in Artifact). Having beaten Death in his game, Celeste chose to come back to life to take revenge on the bandits. Thus Muerta was born, who now sends the souls of scoundrels (and not only) to the afterlife.

Muerta's powers
Muerta is a character with the Intelligence attribute. In combat, she relies on her revolvers, as well as the help of spirits.
- Dead Shot.
The hero fires a ghostly bullet at an enemy or tree. Upon reaching the target, the bullet deals damage and slows, then ricochets off in the chosen direction.
- Type of Damage: Magical.
- Ability: Targeted
- Damage: 75/150/225/300
- Fear Slow: 1.3/1.5/1.8/2.0
- Deceleration: 100%
- Duration: 0.5 seconds
- Mana cost: 100/120/140/160
- Reload: 16/14/12/10
- The Calling.
Muerta calls upon 4 spirits that circle around a chosen area. Enemies within the area are slowed to move and attack. The wraith deals damage and silence to the target unit when touched.
- Type of Damage: Magical.
- Skill Type: Targeted Area
- Damage: 45/95/135/180
- Time of Effect: 10
- Slowdown: 30%
- Attack slow: 30/40/50/60
- Silence duration: 2/2.5/3/3.5
- Mana cost: 150/175/200/225
- Reload: 30
- Gunslinger
When attacking, Muerta has a chance to fire a random shot. Enemy units are a high priority target.
- Type of ability: Passive.
- Chance: 20/30/40/50%.
- Pierce The Veil
Muerta takes a disembodied form. Hero is invulnerable to physical damage and can pass through units.
When used with the Ultimax ability, Muerta's attacks become magical, allowing her to attack ethereal units but not to deal damage to magic immune units.
- Duration: 6/7/8
- Transformation Time: 0.3
- Additional damage from auto-attacks: 50/75/100
- Mana cost: 150/250/350
- Reload: 75/60/45
- Type of Intelligence: Normal.
At first glance, Muerta looks like a first rate hero, just as Valve describes her. The hero has a built-in passive ability that allows him to deal damage to multiple targets, and an ultimatum boost from his auto-attacks.
On the other hand, the hero has a semblance of control, thanks to and. Muerta's already obvious problem is the high cost of abilities and the rather large kuldowns. With a good intelligence boost (+3.3 per level), this drawback will be corrected later in the game.
Muerta's Talents
Muerta has two types of ability for both of these talents. From that, we can assume that a character can be trained by increasing his autoattacks and stats (left branch), or through abilities (right branch).
level 10
- +8 power/+100 damage Dead Shot.
Level 15
- +25 damage/+250 range Dead Shot
20th level
- The Calling calls for two additional Dead Shot spirits
Level 25
- +25% magic resistance/+25% chance to trigger Gunslinger
As with all added heroes, while Muerta has not added any boost from Aghanim's Shard and Aghanim's Scepter.
Muerta's Role in Dota 2
It's not yet possible to say with certainty how Muerta will be used. On the first day of release, there are two builds to consider: a carrie through auto-attacks with the left talent branch, or a castor through the right talent branch.
Nevertheless, both options do not allow her to play the role of a sopporte. Muerta has a high mana cost, not the largest of mana boosts to begin with, as well as large ability kuldowns. These factors combine to make her a poor bargaining chip to trade with enemy characters in a lane.
It also seems questionable on the central line. While Muerta is a decent matchup partner thanks to the scare effect from Dead Shot, her passive early stage ability is ineffective, and her Calling knockdown won't allow her to solo rolls, though it will be a good way to finish off creeps.
In general, you have to wait for Valve to recalibrate abilities/talents as they do with all new heroes, as well as add the effects of buying Aghanim's Shard and Aghanim's Scepter.
Muerta's connection to Dota 2 heroes and references
Valve have accompanied the release of Muerta with a short comic with references to Artifact, as well as mentions of two characters. One of them is the leader of a gang of lizard-like humanoids, Zell, and death's counterpart, Bone King.
It is possible that in the future we will meet up with these two again and see them on the battlefields of the Ancients. Perhaps as actors and playable characters, or perhaps as NPCs or opponents in some sort of event, as in the one that was added to the game before the character release.
On March 4, a heroine-related mini-event kicked off in the game. As part of the temporary event, characters presented the statue of Revenant with letters in memory of the dead. Among the descriptions of the letters you can recognize the messages from some of the characters: they are Juggernaut, Legion Commander, Sisters Crystal Maiden and Lina and others. All of them communicate with deceased loved ones through Muert's mediation.
However, this does not mean that the new Dota character is directly related to the above characters: it's more a play on the origins of Muerta, or rather, the source from which Valve drew inspiration for the development of the hero. Naturally, it is the theme of death in the folklore of Spanish-speaking countries, and Mexico in particular.
A direct link and reference to Muerta's Mexican origins lies in the mini-event that kicked off in Dot with the release of the character. In it, the heroes have to collect orange flowers, which can later be exchanged for special chests. These orange blossoms are nothing more than an allegory for orange velvets - special flowers used to decorate the graves of the dead on the Day of the Dead.
In the coming days we can expect the character's presence in the matches and Valve's intervention. Obviously, the hero will be refined or even redesigned in some aspects, but the essence of the hero will remain unchanged - it's a midrange character with unique mechanics and potentially the first Carrier-into-player in the history of Dota.
