Mortal Kombat awaits relaunch! What do we know about Mortal Kombat 1?
Elen StelmakhLast week, developers from NetherRealm Studios showed a story trailer for the new Mortal Kombat fighting game series. And not just showed it, they said that the series will be rebooted. In the announcement the developers managed to name the release date - September 19, 2023 - and also revealed the mechanics, plot and other features of the "nullified" number part. In this piece we've gathered all the facts we know about the future Mortal Kombat 1.
Mortal Kombat 1 release date
We have already announced that Mortal Kombat 1 will be released on September 19, 2023. In this case, pre-order holders will get access to the game a couple of days earlier, on September 14, and will get to the beta test in August. It is known that the game will be released on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch.
Mortal Kombat 1 key features (from the developers' point of view)
As the developers themselves assure, Mortal Kombat 1 will receive the longest-lasting support compared to the other members of the series. Probably it's about the following: don't expect a sequel in the next couple of years. On the other hand, if Mortal Kombat 11 was supported by the developers for a little over two years, the next part of the franchise/series will be supported for a little longer (maybe about three years).
What did the developers show in the Mortal Kombat 1 trailer anyway?
The previous installment ended with Liu Kang gaining divine power. With it, he was able to build a wonderful world, which was shown in the announcement. In it, Kun Lao is carefree working in the fields, Kitana and Milina are peacefully riding in a carriage, and Scorpio and Sab-Ziro consider themselves brothers.
In the next scene, the sky darkens and Shang Tsung emerges from a portal. He trashes the heroes, but then misses a punch from Liu Kang. God kills Zong with a spectacular fatality, and the title, Mortal Kombat 1, appears behind his back.
It's just as you figured: Liu Kang will restart the universe. Along with that, the universe will revive the legendary heroes that we gamers will have to fight for.
There are also a few innovations that can't be avoided:
- New characters and celebrities will appear in the game. According to journalist Jez Corden, we'll be playing as Homeworlder from The Boys, Peacekeeper from Suicide Squad and Conan the Barbarian. Fans can also expect to see Ermak, Quan Chi, as well as cameo characters Johnny Cage, Chameleon, Tremor, Ferra and Mavado.
- Cameo fighters are the very new mechanics. We'll now be able to choose a partner before a fight to complete a killer combo and assist with special attacks.
- There will be a story campaign with epic cutscenes. We will not need to have access to The International network to pass the campaign.
- The developers have promised to bring cross-play and cross-progress, but only after the release.
NetherRealm Studios has also revealed that one of the future DLCs for Mortal Kombat 1 will completely change the look of Johnny Cage, making him look like Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Which heroes are officially confirmed
The list is not long, but it will get longer and longer as Mortal Kombat 1 itself approaches the release date:
- Scorpion, Sab-Ziro, Liu Kang, Raiden, Kun Lao, Kitana, Milena, Shang Tsung and Johnny Cage.
By the way, we should expect more details from the developers at the upcoming PlayStation Showcase 2023. We also managed to talk about it in our previous article.
