Marvel Rivals New Hero Overview — Phoenix

Fiery power and telepathy — the new character Phoenix in Marvel Rivals reveals unexpected combinations and adds tactical depth to team fights.
On July 11, Marvel Rivals will welcome a new hero — Jean Grey, also known as Phoenix. Classified as a Duelist with a difficulty rating of 3 out of 5, this character promises to bring both fire and chaos to the battlefield — quite literally.
Phoenix’s Abilities from Closed Beta Testing of the New Season
We invite you to get acquainted with the abilities of the new hero joining the ranks of Marvel Rivals. Those who have already tested Phoenix have shared their opinions, describing her abilities as at least very strong, and at most, unbalanced.
Main Attack: Cosmic Flames
Phoenix’s primary attack unleashes a fiery projectile that applies 1 “Spark” to the hit enemy. Critical hits apply 2 Sparks. Upon accumulating 3 Sparks, Phoenix triggers a fiery explosion that deals area damage and heals Jean Grey. Sparks from the explosion do not stack immediately again.
The projectile is hitscan, meaning it hits the target instantly. Thanks to high attack speed and a large attack radius, applying Sparks and triggering explosions is effortless. The only obstacles to Phoenix’s efficiency are shields and highly mobile enemies.
Telepathic Illusion (L.Shift)
Phoenix leaves behind an illusion and instantly teleports forward. This illusion can be detonated to apply 1 Spark on nearby enemies. This ability is an excellent tool for repositioning or confusing opponents.
Dark Ascent (E)
This skill allows Jean Grey to fly and move freely through the air. It boosts her movement speed and replenishes ammo, with no cooldown but consuming ability charge. Phoenix values freedom, and this ability perfectly reflects her character.
Telekenesis Burst (Right Mouse Button)
This ability lets Phoenix control space and disrupt enemy plans from a distance. Here’s how it works:
- Jean Grey marks an area with psionic energy.
- The first blast briefly stuns enemies for less than a second.
- The next two blasts slow them down.
- Applies 1 Spark to affected enemies.
- Has a large area of effect.
The stun should be seen more as a way to interrupt enemy ultimates rather than reliable crowd control. However, the long range makes it a great option to attack snipers or retreating targets.
Endsong Inferno (Q)
Jean Grey soars into the sky with Phoenix and crashes down onto a targeted area. The ultimate deals damage over a wide zone and creates a shockwave that destroys enemy structures, shields, and additional health. It applies 1 Spark to enemies hit.
Direct impact damage is modest, but the enormous radius and the shockwave’s ability to pass through obstacles make this ultimate formidable.
While aiming the ultimate, Jean Grey is invulnerable. However, once the dive begins, a model with 400 health appears — she can be attacked and killed during this time. After the ultimate finishes, the hero returns to the activation point.
Mind's Grace team-up ability
This ability empowers Wolverine with the Phoenix Force. His usual “Wild Leap” transforms into “Phoenix Warrior”: Wolverine becomes enveloped in flames that deal percentage-based damage to both himself and nearby enemies. In this state, Wolverine heals whenever he deals damage.
Additionally, Jean Grey gains a permanent 10% damage bonus throughout the game. This is a great bonus for players who appreciate strong team synergy. We will analyze new team abilities in more detail in upcoming articles, so stay tuned for updates.
Features and Impressions
Phoenix’s fast attack speed and large radius greatly simplify applying Sparks and activating explosions. Her self-healing ability noticeably boosts Jean Grey’s survivability compared to other Duelists — a rare and highly valuable trait.
Overall, the hero feels both powerful and agile, though some weaknesses remain: shields and highly mobile opponents can limit her combat effectiveness.
New Legendary Skin for Jean Grey

Phoenix is a bright and exciting addition to the Marvel Rivals hero lineup. Her abilities perfectly capture the iconic image of Jean Grey in all her fiery and telepathic glory. Along with the character release, a special skin will be available for purchase, following the example of the recent Ultron release.
