Ambessa Medarda from Arcane – New League of Legends Champion: Release Date, Abilities & In Game Role

On November 9, the second and final season of the Arcane animated series by Fortiche Studio and Riot Games will be released on Netflix. The series will conclude the story of League of Legends’ most famous champions, such as Jinx, Vi, Caitlyn, and others. Among the characters featured in Arcane, one of the central roles is played by Ambessa Medarda – a Noxian general, who will become the next playable champion in League of Legends.

Ambessa Medarda, The Matriarch of War, will be the 169th playable champion in League of Legends, and the third champion after Smolder and Aurora to be added to the LoL champs roster in 2024. Ambessa’s release on the official League of Legends servers is scheduled for November 6, 2024, along with patch 14.22.

Drakehound’s Step (Passive)

Ambessa’s passive ability is all about timing and mobility. Whenever you use an attack or movement command while casting any of her abilities, Ambessa will automatically dash a short distance once the ability finishes. This passive also enhances her next attack, boosting its range, damage, and speed, while refunding energy. Use this to reposition and chain attacks for maximum impact in fights or simply to outpush minion waves.

Cunning Sweep/ Sundering Slam (Q)

This ability has two parts. The initial cast, Cunning Sweep, slashes in an arc in front of Ambessa, dealing damage. If you hit an enemy with this, you unlock Sundering Slam for the next cast, which allows Ambessa to slam her twin blades in a line, dealing additional damage to the first enemy hit. Try to land Cunning Sweep to unlock the more powerful Sundering Slam, and use the dash from your passive to reposition for both strikes.

Repudiation (W)

Repudiation gives Ambessa a shield and prepares her for a counter-attack. If she absorbs non-minion damage while shielding, the ability will deal increased damage when she slams the ground. Timing is key: use this ability when you anticipate incoming enemy damage to maximize its damage potential.

Lacerate (E)

Ambessa spins her blades, damaging and slowing nearby enemies. If you activate Drakehound’s Step after using this ability, Ambessa strikes again after her dash. Lacerate is useful for slowing enemies and following up with a dash for extra damage, making it great for both engaging and escaping.

Public Execution (R)

Ambessa’s ultimate is a high-impact ability that targets the furthest enemy champion in a chosen direction. She blinks to them, suppressing them on arrival, then slams them into the ground, dealing damage and applying a stun. Use this to isolate and disable enemies botlane champs in fights, disrupting their ability to fight back.

Based on Ambessa’s abilities and her primary resource – energy – it’s already clear that she is a top and mid-lane champion, with a priority on the top lane. Her strong 1v1 dueling potential and high mobility make her effective in trades against enemies.

In theory, Ambessa can also be played in the bot lane as an ADC, but she is level-dependent, especially since her scaling, particularly from her passive ability, is something exceptional. Her dependence on levels seems to be both her greatest strength and weakness, making her ideal for solo lanes where she can dominate any opponent. It looks like there will be serious competition between her, K'Sante, and Yone for the title of the most broken solo laner.
