Esports news JD Gaming
In brief:
JD Gaming is a Chinese club founded in 2017. The team has been a regular partner of the regional league LPL since its foundation. The club became the two-time winner of the tournaments in the LPL series.
JD Gaming emerged on the professional scene in May 2017. The team received a slot of QG Reapers in LPL.
The first results on the competitive scene
Demacia Cup 2017 was a debut championship for JD Gaming. 8 players of the club were playing there: Kabe, Clid, Xinyi, Doinb, Barrett, LokeN, LvMao, and BanBazi.
The remarkable thing is that 4 representatives of China and 4 legionnaires from South Korea were playing for JD Gaming at Demacia Cup 2017. However, it did not help them to achieve heights: the team finished its performance in the group stage, having left Group C after the first round.
After a warm-up tournament, JD Gaming moved to play matches at LPL Summer 2017. The roster still included 8 players and the results were mediocre. JD placed 5th in Group B, which did not allow them to proceed to the playoffs.
JDG finished its debut year in the competitive League of Legends at NEST 2017 where they continued testing their roster. JD Gaming had a more productive 2018 ahead.
The 2018-2019 seasons
In 2018, JD Gaming continued using the idea of the vast roster. The team was not ready to refuse the overdue players till the start of LPL Summer 2018.
To realize the non-working scheme of using 7-8 players, JDG had to hold the top 8 at LPL Spring 2018 and finalize the roster to participate in LPL Summer 2018. The team listed GimGoon, Xinyi, Alex, Cool, Lwx, and Crisp for the summer season. The last two players will be a core of JD Gaming at the upcoming tournaments in the LPL series and international events.
LPL Summer 2019, just like LPL Regional Finals, was over for JDG in third place. It was a serious boost in terms of quality but it was still not enough to have the title of the top Chinese team like Invictus Gaming or FunPlus Phoenix.
They managed to come close to such a title in 2019, and finally gained a foothold in 2020.
The 9th competitive season was passable for JD Gaming. The team reached the final of LPL Spring 2019 but lost to Invictus Gaming with a score of 1-3, it held the same 2nd place at the semi-official Rift Rivals 2019 later where JDG lost to the champions from Korea in the final.
The 10th place at LPL Summer 2019 was a significant failure, which was unexpected. They partly rehabilitated at LPL Regional Finals 2019 where JDG held 3rd place, having lost to IG in the even series (2-3).
Demacia Championship 2019 was the final tournament of the year for JD Gaming. The team placed 3rd there, after which it started active preparations for the 2020 season.
The first road to Worlds and the 2020 season
JD Gaming started a new season with a promising statement. Having a roster of Zoom, Kanavi, Yagao, LokeN, and LvMao, JDG held 2nd place in the group stage of LPL Spring 2020, after which they outplayed FunPlus Phoenix in the playoffs to beat TOP Esports in the grand final. By the way, the last one will become their principled opponent for years ahead.
The victory at LPL Spring 2020 provided JDG with a trip to its first international tournament – the Mid-Season Cup. JDG finished third in the battle against their colleagues from China and South Korea.
Then, JD Gaming played at LPL Summer 2020. Having passed the group stage confidently, JDG, also, advanced to the grand final, however, they were stopped by the familiar TOP Esports who stole JD’s chance to become the best Chinese team of the season.
However, second place gave JDG a chance to play at the club’s first championship in the Worlds series. The team held the top 8 at Worlds 2020.
The total failure in 2021 and the comeback in 2022
JDG faced giant difficulties in a new competitive season, although it had not made global changes: the roster was all the same and the performance dropped down dramatically.
The team lost everything possible in one year: the top 6 at LPL Spring 2021, the top 12 at LPL Summer 2021, and the top 12 at NEST 2021. The icing on the cake was the 21-24th place at the Demacia Cup 2021, which remains the most disastrous result in the history of the club.
JD Gaming made a drastic reshuffle in 2022 The updated team included the familiar faces who had been playing for the club in its early days – 369, Yagao, and Kanavi, and, also, the newcomers in the face of Hope and Missing.
The roster changes benefited the team. JDG looked like themselves at the spring split.
The team reached the top 3 in the group stage of LPL Spring 2022, which unlocked a path to the playoffs.
Having proceeded to the quarterfinals, JD prevailed over Weibo Gaming with a score of 3-2 but they were defeated by the MSI champions, Royal Never Give Up, in the next series (2-3). JDG lost to Victory Five in the third-place match, having finished the split in 4th place.
In the summer, JD Gaming managed to return to the crown of the Chinese region. The team shared the leadership of the group stage with their old rivals from TOP Esports and later, it defeated LNG Esports and outplayed TES twice in the playoffs: one time in the upper bracket final and the second one in the grand final.
The championship title of LPL Summer 2022 was a solid argument at Worlds 2022. The team corresponded to the status and looked confident in the course of the competition until the semifinals where they met T1, which finished JDG’s road as a result, having outplayed them with a score of 3-1.
The team let the youth roster play at the end of the year. The team entered the top 14 at NEST 2022 and the top 8 at Demacia Cup 2022.
How much JD Gaming earned
As of 2023, JD Gaming has earned 1,453,131.28 dollars at LoL tournaments. The share of prizes from League of Legends is 68% of the club's total prize money.
