Biography s4
Gustav «s4» Magnusson is one of the most famous and titled representatives of the Swedish Dota 2 scene. Gustav has managed to become a repeated champion at various tournaments in his career, including the largest esports championship. The player is a legend for a reason and has giant baggage of experience. We present to your attention s4’s path to becoming an esportsman.
The beginning of the career
Like the majority of esportsmen, Gustav started his path from computer clubs and video games. Since his childhood, he has spent a lot of time in front of a PC, which helped him to build a successful career later.
S4 started his road to the big esports from Heroes of Newerth. He was playing for team ADON there, which was signed by Lions eSportsKlubb later. Having achieved the maximum heights there, the player predicted the upcoming death of the discipline and moved to Dota 2, a more perspective game.
The Tough Bananas was the first club for the player. Having spent only 4 months there, s4 took part in a row of small tournaments, after which he joined Copenhagen Wolves.
S4 was a player of Copenhagen Wolves from March 2012 to July of that year but he was unable to achieve significant results. However, the success was near. In July 2012, s4 transferred to No Tidehunter, which was transformed into Alliance two months later.
Alliance and world glory
Starting from No Tidehunter, the team was demonstrating nice results. In 2012, the team held the second place at AverMedia Dota 2 Cup, the first place at DreamHack Winter 2012, the second place at Thor Open 2012.
The team transformed into the organization Alliance in April 2013. The team began a series of successful performances under the new tag. The team achieved victory at DreamHack Invitational 2013, The Premier League Season 4 in April 2013, the team won WePlay Dota2 League Season 1 and G-1 Champions League Season 5 in May. Alliance was gaining momentum.
The team continued dominating in summer 2013. They prevailed at DreamHack Summer 2013, the team won StarLadder StarSeries Season 6 and The Premier League Season 5 in July.
The culmination was the performance at The International 2013, the final of which with the participation of Alliance and NaVi was considered to be the very best match in the history of Dota for many years. In that final, S4 literally stole NaVi’s victory, having cast the legendary «The million-dollar Dream Coil». In this way, s4 with his teammates became the best players in the world in one year of playing the new discipline. Unfortunately, the upcoming year, as it usually happens, was the beginning of the end for Alliance.
Despite the results being good, there was a decline. The team started holding places outside of the top 3 more and more frequently and it even did not pass the group stage at The International 2014, having placed 11th-12th.
The performance at TI4 was the last one for s4 on the roster of Alliance. The next team for s4 was the superstar roster of Team Secret.
Finding himself
Having moved to Team Secret in August 2014, s4 and the team quickly became one of the most serious opponents. The game was just building during the first period but the team won two big tournaments in May-June: The Summit 3 and ESL One Frankfurt 2015. Secret was considered to be one of the main favorites at the upcoming The International 2015. However, the team sensationally lost to VP and placed 7th-8th, which led to total replacements inside the team. In August 2015, s4 returned to Alliance again.
The return provided a short-term success: the team achieved victory at World Cyber Arena 2015 and StarLadder i-League StarSeries Season 1. But the team held the 9th-12th at The International 2016, after which s4 left Alliance again.
OG was the next team for s4.
OG, the kings of the Majors, and the betrayal
Having become a player of OG in August 2016, s4 returned to big victories on the world scene again. It took just 4 months for the team to win the first Major tournament in the history of Dota 2, The Boston Major 2016, after which it achieved victory at The Kiev Major 2017 4 months later. OG quickly became the main contender for Aegis of the champions in 2017 but the team placed only 7th-8th at The International 7. After that, the team tried to return the past shape but the efforts failed. S4 with Fly moved to EG in 2018.
The transfer to EG was made for one purpose – to prevail at The International. Despite EG being close to this twice, the team held the 3rd place in 2018, the 5th-6th place in 2019, EG and s4 were not able to win the second Aegis of the champions.
S4 became inactive in September 2019 but he returned to his native gaming house, Alliance, in April.
The third transfer to Alliance and personal achievements
Gustav returned to Alliance in April 2020 in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. With Alliance, he managed to place second at ESL One Birmingham 2020 – Online: Europe & CIS, OGA Dota PIT S2: Europe/CIS, 4th at OMEGA League: Europe Immortal Division, and 3rd at OGA Dota PIT S3: Europe/CIS.
S4 was honored with many personal rewards in his career. He was recognized to be the best player of 2013 by Team Liquid, JoinDOTA, GosuAwards, and onGamers. Also, he was considered to be the best mid lane player in 2013 by JoinDota and, of course, he has the best play award of 2013 for the performance in the final of The International 2013 by JoinDota and Team Liquid.
The player has managed to earn more than 2,535,000 dollars of prize money in his career.
