What Kind of Format Could an eSports Slots Tournament Take?
Bogdan LashchenkoThe annual calendar for eSports events and tournaments is already a pretty full one. But there seems to be an almost infinite appetite for more. More events, different games, and alternative formats are all on the table.
But there’s one incredibly popular kind of game that has so far slipped under the radar. That is the phenomenon of playing slots online. From barely existing a couple of decades ago, now these are some of the most played games on casino sites and it could lend itself well to the tournament format and even make gaming tournaments more accessible.
This is because slots are quick and easy to pick up, especially in comparison to the more typical MMO games you see in tournaments. And, just as there are standout titles in the gaming world, the same is true about slots. Among the most popular are the Gonzo’s Quest and Rainbow Riches series, along with pop culture titles like Rick and Morty and Who Wants To Be a Millionaire.
So the big question is how could these games, which have millions of fans all around the world, be used to play eSports tournaments? The answer may be far simpler than you think. In fact, there are already slots tournaments that are being played both in casinos and online where they are proving to be very successful.
The Format
To make them equally big on the wider stage of eSports, there are a number of considerations. The first of which has to be the format. To create the level playing field needed, it would have to involve all contestants competing in the same game with exactly the same chances of winning. No problem here. After all, that’s the same as all eSports contests.
All would also have to be given the same initial stake money to begin with and a set time to play the game. Then it would just be a question of watching the action unfold as the clock ticks down. Then, at the end of the allotted period, it would be a question of seeing who had won the most from their particular game.
To create the tournament element, the lowest winning players would be eliminated with the rest going through to the next round. This would go on until an eventual overall winner would emerge. Of course, there are other typical eSports tournament formats that could be used too.
The Strategy
While playing on slots is, one level, a pure game of chance, there would be the option to introduce an element of strategy. That’s because wins are calculated as multiples of the stake wagered. So judgment of when to bet big could have quite an effect – equally, it could mean the player’s bankroll is exhausted and they’re out of the game.
The Prizes
Admittedly, the prize for a slots tournament would probably never make it onto this list of the largest eSports prize pools. But there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be pretty impressive all the same. So it could be the money the winners have amassed in the tournament or a set price pot.
This, like many other details, are certain to be ironed out if we do ever see this kind of tournament take shape.
We’ll just have to wait and see if it ever does.
