What are the Most Famous Online Games?

Many online games come and go, but ever wondered what games have stood the test of time? You're not alone. Everyone wants to play the biggest. But at a time when the Internet is flooded with new video games, what should you play?

We’ve scoured the Internet to find the biggest games in the world, particularly those designed to last for a long time. As such, some of the games outlined below are probably titles you will be enjoying with your kids many years from now. Let’s begin.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO)

Launched in 2012, CS: GO has been one of the most successful video games of the last decade. It ranks amongst the top five best games for eSports. It boasts of a fan base of over 50 million people and generates tens of millions of dollars in profit for developer Valve.

At its core, CS: GO is a first shooter multiplayer action game. It pits two sides together: terrorists and the counter-terrorists. Winning means defeating the opposing team while also completing separate missions.

The separate missions could be to plant a bomb for the terrorists or to defuse one for the counter-terrorists. The beauty of CS: GO, however, is that it's continuously being updated to feature more gaming modes, more powerful weapons, and better stability. And considering Valve makes lots of money from it, expect the game to be around for long.

League of Legends (LOL)

League of Legends has a cult status in the online gaming world. It’s one of those games every streamer and pro-gamer wants to be excellent at. That's because it has an unbelievably large global fan base that's highly engaged, especially in the eSports scene.

If you want to become a Twitch streamer or a professional gamer, consider learning how to play LOL. Keep in mind it's jam-packed with elite professionals, although you can play against newbies.

When it comes to gameplay, LOL is a multiplayer battle arena game involving two opposing teams and a Nexus. Each player is represented by a super-powerful character with unique skills. That means how you play is determined by the character you are controlling. With that in mind, the objective is to destroy the opposing side’s nexus.

Online Slots

Contrary to popular belief, online slots are some of the most played games online. Just take a look at the slot community on Twitch. Over a dozen channels have hundreds of thousands of subscribers each.

Surprisingly, most slots players aren’t found on Twitch. They spend their time on online casinos playing the best new slots. Others are busy discovering bonuses to help maximize their profits or to cushion losses.

And similar to video games, some slots are genuinely going to stand the test of time. Take Microgaming’s Thunderstruck as an example. Launched in 2004, the five-reel video slot is still one of the best-rated casino games today.

If you've never played slots, you will love that they are simple to play. You don't need experience or skills. All you need is to place a bet and watch as the magic happens. By magic we mean the reels can turn in your favor, or you could lose—slots are purely chance-based.

Dota 2

Some critics believe Dota 2’s future is in limbo. The game’s player count has been on a decline since 2014. What’s more, Valve doesn’t appear too interested in solving players’ pain points. But all these issues don’t erase one fact.

Dota 2 is still one of the biggest eSports games out there. A report by analytical firm Statista shows it records up to 750,000 concurrent players per month. Then it has annual tournaments that attract thousands of players and pay out millions of dollars.

When it comes to gameplay, Dota 2 works like League of Legends. There are two teams on the opposing side. Then there's a structure (ancient) each team protects and a handful of powerful characters controlled by each gamer.

Fortnite

Fortnite is yet another top video game that dominated the last three years but appears to be losing popularity. It still famous enough to attract 80 million competitors for the 2019 World Cup, though.

In fact, developer Epic Games had a budget of $64 million for last year’s tournaments, with $30 million of the money going towards paying World Cup winners.  So, why do experts believe Fortnite might not stand the test of time?

Fortnite can't seem to create fresh content fast enough. That means there are only too many times fans can play the same game before they start to lose interest. Last year, Epic Games attempted to save the franchise by announcing the release of Fortnite Chapter 2.

The updated game came with new features and NPC characters. It had more visually appealing graphics and a few more add-ons. Despite that, not everyone is showing an interest in the Battle Royale.

Dragon Ball Fighter Z

If Dota 2 is a game of the past, Dragon Ball Fighter Z represents the future. It's one of the fastest upcoming games and one of the best-rated console games on Nintendo Switch. From its visuals and storyline to the music and controls, DBZ seems to be doing everything right.

Well, few games are perfect, and DBZ is no exception. It might have attracted excellent ratings for almost every aspect, but it was highly criticized for its online gaming mode. And that's a massive threat against its future success.

For starters, DBZ Kakarot came with no multiplayer, meaning you couldn’t team up with friends to defeat powerful enemies. The issue has since been corrected. But the game’s most avid fans say needs plenty of fixing.

Summary

Some of the most famous games in the last five years might not be popular by 2025. Dota 2 and Fortnite are the aptest examples. On the flip side, some games like LOL, video slots, and CS: GO are projected to continue dominating the world years to come. And that's because their developers are continuously trying to make them more exciting, engaging, and advanced.
