The Ins and Outs of the Metaverse: A Guide for Everyday Internet Users

The Ins and Outs of the Metaverse: A Guide for Everyday Internet Users

You might've had a dream about hanging out with your gees in a virtual world that only exists in your computer. This vision might have earned you those “are you okay?” looks some decades ago. But guess what? The Metaverse had made this dream a reality. Keep reading to know more about what this technology brings to the table.

What Is the Metaverse All About?

You can think of the Metaverse as a playground. People don't just meet up to play games. They can have fun chats with each other, work, and do almost everything that you do in your everyday life. The only difference is that all these activities are done virtually.

One reason the Metaverse is popular in the world today is because it engages you deeply. You don't have to just look at a screen. You can take things a step further by wearing those goggles known as VR headsets. When you put on these headsets, it'll feel as if you're inside this digital space.

How Did the Metaverse Come to Be?

The Metaverse didn't just come out of thin air. The word itself was first written in a sci-fi book called Snow Crash. It was just an idea for a very long time. But this idea became popular when big tech companies saw its potential and started to invest millions of dollars into it. This led them to start building virtual worlds where thousands of people could hang out and do whatever they pleased (as long as it was legal).

You'd find that there are popular games that act as if they're mini-metaverses. Titles like Fortnite and Roblox allow gamers to do things with each other. And if you're with the right click, you'll be able to attend fun parties and events.

Facebook changed its name to Meta in 2021. This rebrand was the company's attempt to show the world that it wanted to become a leading name in the Metaverse race. To show its commitment to this goal, Meta is making VR headsets that allow people to get into 3D spaces where they can learn, interact with others, and play games.

DID YOU KNOW: According to Statista, there are 144 million daily active users on Roblox games across the world. The average Roblox user plays related games for about 2.4 hours each day. This level of interaction is great in a world where people's attention span is limited. But it's a thing because Roblox has virtual worlds where you can create buildings and relationships without feeling bored.

What Can You Do When You're in the Metaverse?

The Metaverse is so cool in that there are a lot of things that you can do. Top mentions include:

#1 Attend Virtual Concerts

You can watch your favorite singer sing their best song and feel like you're in the front row and they're staring at you in real time. Ariana Grande held a Metaverse concert that was known as the Rift Tour in 2021. This performance took place in Fortnite and attracted more than 78 million viewers.

#2 Go to Meetings

You can go to meetings hosted by your teacher or boss at the office in the Metaverse. Those that are attending can appear as any digital character they like. While meetings can be serious, this element can make everyone involved speak in a calm manner.

#3 Shop for Virtual Items

The Metaverse gives you the luxury of purchasing clothes, accessories, and other cool gear for your avatar. You could even go further to buy virtual land and build virtual houses on them. Like it is in the real world, certain items and lands cost more. Some platforms even allow you to exchange these purchases for real money whenever you want to.

#4 Play Games

This is probably the most popular reason why most people make use of the Metaverse. You can play action and adventure games with people from different parts of the world in this digital space. And with VR headsets in the picture, it's like you're one with the game.

Beyond regular video games, you can access a list of new crypto casinos on the Metaverse and play casino-style games across slots, table games, and live titles. And if you're lucky, you could be in line for a decent or massive win.

FUN FACT: The Metaverse part of the gaming market is currently valued at around $35.86 billion. It's forecasted that this sector will grow to an estimated $176.15 billion in 2031. This rise shows that this technology is expected to become even more mainstream in years to come.

What Do You Need to Start Your Adventure in the Metaverse?

You don't need to be friends with Elon Musk to get your adventure started in the Metaverse. But you must have some things for a great adventure:

  • A PC, Gaming Console, or Smartphone: You can use any of them for experiences in the digital world. Most Metaverse platforms will work on regular devices you've got in your home.
  • VR Headset: You need a VR headset for an adventure that feels real from start to finish. But note that this isn't a must-have on most Metaverse platforms. Set aside between $300 to $1,000 for a functional VR headset if you really want that WOW experience in the Metaverse These are slightly expensive; but their prices will fall when more companies start making them.
  • An Internet Connection: This is important because the virtual world has a lot of new information that it has to process in real-time. Your adventure could be glitchy if your internet connection is slow. Make sure you choose a provider known for high speeds for a smooth experience.
  • A Willingness to Explore: You can't buy this because it's in you. When you go into the Metaverse, make sure you explore your surroundings. You'll make mistakes. But there's no fine for errors. You'll get a hang of things after you spend some time in this virtual space.
