StarLadder Budapest Major 2025: Full Tournament Review

The most anticipated tournament of the 2025 season, StarLadder Budapest Major 2025, is now behind us. It was the final major event at the end of the year, after which CS2 players and fans finally got a chance to rest and recover. After a six-year hiatus, StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 delivered thrilling and intense matches, along with three full weeks of Counter-Strike 2 action. In this article, we’ll take a look at how the tournament unfolded—from Stage 1 all the way to Vitality’s championship triumph.
Tournament Format and Expectations
StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 followed the classic modern Major format with three stages and a playoff bracket, spanning nearly three weeks from November 24 to December 14, 2025. The total prize pool amounted to $1,250,000, with $500,000 awarded to the champions.
The first three stages—Stage 1, Stage 2, and Stage 3—were held at MTK Sportpark, where teams battled for survival under the Swiss system and constant competitive pressure. It was here that the main title contenders emerged, while the decisive matches were reserved for a much larger stage.
Stage 1 took place from November 24 to 27 and featured 16 teams competing in a Swiss format. Elimination and qualification matches were played as Bo3, while all other matches were Bo1. At the end of the stage, the top eight teams advanced, while the remaining eight were eliminated from the Major.
Stage 2, running from November 29 to December 2, kept the same format: 16 teams, Swiss system, Bo3 in decisive matches and Bo1 otherwise. Only half of the participants advanced, significantly raising the stakes of every series.
Stage 3, held from December 4 to 7, became the toughest test before the playoffs. Sixteen of the strongest teams remained, but only eight secured playoff spots, while the rest were eliminated just one step away from the arena stage.
The final part of the tournament—the Playoffs—took place from December 11 to 14 at the MVM Dome, the largest venue of the Major, designed to maximize the atmosphere of the decisive matches. The playoffs were played in a single-elimination format: quarterfinals and semifinals were Bo3, while the grand final was a Bo5 showdown.
Even before the tournament began, Vitality and FURIA were considered the main favorites. The French squad entered the Major with outstanding results throughout the year and the reputation of the most consistent team of the season. FURIA, meanwhile, were at the peak of their form, having won four tournaments in the previous two months. Their biggest argument was a Bo5 victory over Vitality in the IEM Chengdu final, which made many believe the Brazilians could be the main obstacle to Vitality’s second Major trophy of 2025.
Stage 1: Surprises, Underdogs, and Early Losses
The opening stage of StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 delivered plenty of exciting moments and unexpected results. Before it began, analysts and commentators highlighted FaZe Clan and Legacy as the main candidates to advance without a single loss. Based on the level of their opponents, it seemed unlikely that either team would face serious problems at this stage.
However, every big tournament—and especially a Major—comes with immense pressure. Overconfidence and underestimating opponents can have serious consequences. FaZe Clan started with a win but then lost their next two matches, finding themselves one step away from elimination, which came as a huge shock to fans. Still, karrigan managed to rally his teammates, and FaZe secured two crucial victories to advance to Stage 2 with a 3–2 record.
As for Legacy, the Brazilian team suffered a loss in their opening match against FlyQuest but bounced back by defeating Rare Atom and RED Canids, reaching a 2–1 record and moving closer to qualification. However, they were not ready for the dynamic playstyles of B8 and PARIVISION, losing both matches and exiting the tournament at 2–3.

The biggest surprises of Stage 1 were the impressive performances of M80 and FlyQuest, both of whom advanced to Stage 2 undefeated. M80 defeated B8 and PARIVISION and then swept NRG 2–0. FlyQuest took wins against Legacy and Imperial before closing out Fluxo 2–0. While some might argue they benefited from weaker opposition, Majors have repeatedly shown that even underdogs can shine on the biggest stage.
Among the teams eliminated in Stage 1, there were few major surprises. Still, much more was expected from GamerLegion, who managed to beat only Rare Atom and exited the tournament with a 1–3 record.
Stage 2 and Stage 3: From Chaos to the Elite
In Stage 2, the Stage 1 qualifiers were joined by eight invited teams. The pressure and level of competition increased significantly, with more experienced and higher-ceiling rosters entering the fray.
Before Stage 2 began, several teams were tipped to go 3–0, including NAVI, 3DMAX, and Aurora. A real surprise was FaZe Clan, who, after nearly being eliminated in Stage 1, managed to go undefeated. NAVI also lived up to expectations, winning all three of their matches.
Aurora, however, managed to beat only M80 before losing three consecutive matches and exiting the tournament at 1–3. FlyQuest, who had gone 3–0 in Stage 1, were eliminated in Stage 2 with a shocking 0–3 record, despite many believing they could at least put up a fight. M80 lost their opening match to Aurora but recovered with wins over Astralis and TYLOO, bringing them close to Stage 3. However, decisive losses against Imperial and Passion UA ended their run at 2–3.

One of the biggest disappointments was Astralis, who qualified for a Major for the first time in 3.5 years, only to be eliminated in Stage 2 with a 2–3 record.
Stage 3, the most intense phase of the tournament, produced fewer surprises. Team Spirit and FURIA were the first teams to qualify for the playoffs, both finishing 3–0. MOUZ and Vitality each suffered just one loss and advanced with 3–1 records. FaZe Clan, NAVI, and Falcons secured crucial victories in decisive matches to complete the playoff lineup.
Among the surprises was The MongolZ. Many expected them to struggle under the pressure of Stage 3, especially with newcomer controlez on the roster. However, the Mongolian squad proved they should not be underestimated, losing only to Imperial and advancing to the playoffs with a 3–1 record.
Playoffs: The Road to the Champion
After three intense stages, the playoff quarterfinal matchups were set: Falcons vs Spirit, The MongolZ vs Vitality, MOUZ vs FaZe, and NAVI vs FURIA. The first two matches went as expected—Spirit comfortably defeated Falcons 2–0 behind an outstanding performance from donk, while Vitality left no chance for The MongolZ. In the MOUZ vs FaZe matchup, MOUZ were considered favorites, but once again failed to deliver consistently in the playoffs, allowing FaZe to advance.
The most intense quarterfinal was NAVI vs FURIA. The Brazilian side entered the series as clear favorites but failed to handle the stage pressure, which NAVI capitalized on to secure the win. In the semifinals, Vitality edged out Team Spirit 2–0 in a hard-fought series, turning the tide of the first map in overtime. Meanwhile, FaZe Clan pulled off a surprise by defeating NAVI 2–1.
The grand final between FaZe Clan and Vitality was largely controlled by the French squad. Vitality won the series 3–1, claiming their second Major title of 2025 and confirming their status as the strongest team of the season. ZywOo was named MVP of the tournament, earning his sixth MVP award of the year and his second Major MVP, firmly establishing himself as the leading candidate for Player of the Year 2025.
