Sony hasn't disclosed specific sales figures for Gran Turismo 7, the racing game that launched on both PS4 and PS5 in March 2022.
During a GTPlanet roundtable interview, Yamauchi, the series creator, acknowledged the absence of publicly available sales or player data. However, he stressed the game's robust user engagement since its release.
Yamauchi underscored Gran Turismo 7's impressive success, citing its consistently high number of active users post-launch, a characteristic unique to the Gran Turismo series.
He highlighted the Spec II update, released the previous month, as the game's most extensive update to date, significantly bolstering the active player count. Yamauchi described the substantial surge in user numbers following the Spec II update as a rarity in the video game industry.
The Spec II update brought new cars, introduced the snow circuit of Lake Louise, and presented fresh challenges and events across all platforms. Additionally, it introduced exclusive features like the four-player split-screen Couch Mode and Quick Race with Sophy (AI driver agent) integration, exclusive to PS5.
Despite Metascores of 87 (PS5) and 82 (PS4), Gran Turismo 7 attained Sony's lowest user score on the review aggregation site, receiving a rating of 2.3. The game initially faced criticism for its use of microtransactions and encountered a troubled launch marked by significant server issues.
As of November 2022, the Gran Turismo franchise, originating in 1997, had surpassed 90 million sales, according to Sony's report.
Regarding the potential for a PC version, Yamauchi had indicated in December that Gran Turismo 7 wasn't actively being developed for PC. However, he didn't entirely dismiss the possibility, leaving the door open for a potential release in the future.
