NuCaloric: Rewards & Quests of the Marathon Faction

NuCaloric: Rewards & Quests of the Marathon Faction

NuCaloric is one of six factions available in Marathon, built around consumables — Patch Kits, Shield Charges, and the implants that make them more effective. Unlocking the faction requires completing the Introducing: NuCaloric contract on the Perimeter map, a quest that sends runners into a Tick-infested building in the Columns area. Progression through NuCaloric's upgrade tree eventually delivers free daily Advanced Patch Kits and Advanced Shield Charges directly from the Armory. The faction's capstone upgrades extend that survivability further, adding self-revive mechanics, noise reduction while healing, and access to Superior Shield Implants.

NuCaloric rewards accumulate through contracts, looting medical cabinets and Tick nests, harvesting plants, supply drops, exfiltrating NuCal Valuables, and bartering Salvage. Like all Marathon factions, NuCaloric runs a parallel upgrade track where Capstone Rank Bonuses gate the most powerful unlocks behind node investment. Reaching Rank 38 and unlocking 38 nodes opens the Reinforced capstone, which adds Superior Shield Implants to the Armory and expands barter access to Prestige Salvage.

NuCaloric Description

NuCaloric Agricultural is a philanthropically minded consumer megacorp founded by Gus Moraine. The company built its reputation responding to a devastating famine in the 2360s, with Gus Moraine centering public philanthropy as a structural part of corporate strategy rather than a secondary initiative. That history translated into practical dominance — NuCaloric became the primary provider of basic consumer goods across Sol. The faction's representative in Marathon is Gaius, and NuCaloric was one of the original sponsors of the UESC Marathon expedition, which ties the fate of the New Cascadia colonists directly to the company's interests.

In Marathon, NuCaloric operates as a contractor faction, using Runner operatives to gather historical data and specific intel. The faction's in-game footprint centers on medical and shield economy: its upgrade tracks unlock consumable stock in the Armory, reduce the time it takes to use those consumables, and build passive stats that diminish the damage of status effects. Its Armory barter system accepts Salvage in exchange for wares, with barter tier expanding at Capstone ranks I, III, and VI to include Deluxe, Superior, and Prestige Salvage, respectively. I think NuCaloric is the clearest entry point for new runners who want to reduce their exposure to attrition deaths before they've built strong combat fundamentals.

NuCaloric Quests (Contracts)

NuCaloric: Rewards & Quests of the Marathon Faction 1

NuCaloric offers 16 contracts total, ranging from early introductory missions to higher-tier data and resource objectives. Completing contracts is the primary driver of NuCaloric reputation gain, alongside specific looting and harvesting actions in the field. Two contracts are immediately notable for reputation volume: Survival Directive awards 150 reputation, while Data Reconstruction delivers 600. Standard contracts also become more rewarding as upgrades unlock — the Shield Comm upgrade adds Shield Charges to standard contract rewards, Health Comm adds Patch Kits, and Resist Comm adds Mechanic's Kits or OS Reboots.

  • Survival Directive — +150 Reputation
  • Data Reconstruction — +600 Reputation
  • Standard contracts (16 total, staggered through progression)
  • Shield Comm upgrade adds Shield Charges to standard contract rewards
  • Health Comm adds Patch Kits to standard contract rewards
  • Resist Comm adds Mechanic's Kits or OS Reboots to standard contract rewards

Reputation also accumulates outside contracts. Looting Medical Cabinets and Tick nests, harvesting plants, participating in supply drops, and exfiltrating NuCal Valuables all contribute. Solo runners or Rook players receive a 20% reputation bonus per objective, making solo runs a faster path to faction rank.

How to Complete Introducing NuCaloric in Marathon: Quest Guide

NuCaloric: Rewards & Quests of the Marathon Faction 2

The Introducing: NuCaloric contract takes place on the Perimeter map and requires two objectives completed in a single run: retrieve the NuCal Employee ID and download employee data from a terminal in the same building. Head to the Columns area in the south of Perimeter, positioned between the South Relay and Overflow zones. The building is a one-story structure marked with a large orange Tick symbol on the exterior and covered in brown biological material — three Tick nests are visible from outside. The front door does not open; instead, climb the ladder on the outside of the building to reach the roof, then use your knife to break the vent cover and drop through the hole into the storeroom below. Bring surplus ammo, since two Tick nests occupy the main room, a third sits in the side room, and leaving any nest intact will continue spawning Ticks while you search.

NuCaloric: Rewards & Quests of the Marathon Faction 3

Once inside the storeroom, open the access panel door to reach the main area and clear both nests before moving further. The side room to the right contains the third nest and, once cleared, holds the NuCal Employee ID on a shelf to the left. Pick up the ID, then interact with the terminal in the same room to complete the data download — the contract marks both objectives complete at that point and does not require exfiltration. I see the Columns location as a consistent PvP flashpoint, since only one building on the map hosts this contract and solo runners are especially exposed during and after the terminal interaction.

NuCaloric Upgrades

NuCaloric: Rewards & Quests of the Marathon Faction 4

NuCaloric's upgrade tree divides across six primary tracks, each unlocked with Credits and faction-specific materials. Materials required include Unstable Biomass, Reclaimed Biostripping, Sterilized Biostripping, Sparkleaf, Dermachem Pack, Neurochem Pack, Tarax Seed, Biolens Seed, Neural Insulation, Enzyme Replicator, and Hazard Capsule — sourced across Perimeter, Dire Marsh, Outpost, and locked containers.

Safeguard TrackUnlocks free daily Shield Charges, then Advanced Shield Charges; also increases Advanced Shield Charge stock in the Armory by 5 at Rank 12.
Restore TrackGrants free daily Patch Kits starting at Rank 3, upgrading to free daily Advanced Patch Kits at Rank 10, with stock expanded by 5 at Rank 12.
Regen TrackUnlocks Regen implants V2 through V4 for Armory purchase at Ranks 3, 10, and 21 respectively.
Reinforce/ UnfazedBuilds Hardware and Firewall stats in +20 increments across three ranks each, reducing duration of physical debuffs (Frost, Immobilize, Overheat, Toxin) and electronic debuffs (EMP, Hack).
Recovery TrackRaises Self-Repair Speed in +20 steps at Ranks 9, 19, and 29, accelerating how fast consumables restore health and shields.
Null Hazard TrackAdds +50 Hazard Tolerance per rank at Ranks 4 and 14, expanding your maximum data buffer protection restored by HEC consumables.

Upgrade materials come from map-specific sources: Unstable Biomass and Reclaimed Biostripping drop from Perimeter's Hauler area and Dire Marsh's Algae Ponds, while higher-tier materials like Biolens Seed and Enzyme Replicator require Superior or Prestige locked rooms. Hazard Capsules, needed for the deepest upgrades like Recovery Rank 3 and Field Medic, are gated behind Cryo Archive and Prestige locked rooms. Field Medic itself sits behind VIP Rank 1 and reduces the time it takes to use health and shield consumables, directly compressing the window of vulnerability during a heal.

NuCaloric Rewards (Bonuses)

NuCaloric: Rewards & Quests of the Marathon Faction 5

Completing the Introducing: NuCaloric contract awards a Protector V1 shield implant, a unit of Unstable Biomass, a Patch Kit, a Shield Charge, and 1,000 Credits. Despite the faction name in the contract title, all reputation from this introductory quest goes to CyberAcme — each objective awards +90 CyberAcme rep, totaling 180 rep for completing both. Crewmates receive +30 rep per objective just for being in the squad when an objective completes, regardless of whether they have the contract active.

Introducing: NuCaloric contract rewards:

  • Protector V1 (Enhanced Shield Implant)
  • Unstable Biomass (Standard Salvage)
  • Patch Kit (Enhanced Medical Consumable)
  • Shield Charge (Enhanced Shield Consumable)
  • 1,000 Credits

Beyond the introductory contract, NuCaloric's long-term reward structure centers on Armory unlocks and daily freebies. The Safeguard track unlocks free daily Shield Charges at Rank 1 and free daily Advanced Shield Charges at Rank 11. The Restore track delivers a free daily Patch Kit at Rank 3, upgrading to a free daily Advanced Patch Kit at Rank 10. At the top of the faction's capstone track, Rank 30 unlocks Hush.exe — a passive that reduces noise while healing — and Rank 38's Reinforced capstone adds Superior Shield Implants to Armory stock. Self-Revives become available at Rank 12 through the upgrade tree, and Capstone IV's Second Chance.exe gives those self-revives a small chance to not be consumed on activation.

NuCaloric: Rewards & Quests of the Marathon Faction 6

Marathon fields 28 weapons across eight types, from sidearms to sniper rifles, and loadout decisions carry real weight in an extraction shooter where every run risks your gear. The Marathon weapon tierlist breaks down the current meta across all weapon categories, identifying which guns dominate close-quarters and which control long engagements. S-Tier weapons — including the Bully SMG, Overrun AR, Longshot, BR33 Volley Rifle, and Outland — define the competitive baseline any runner should understand before selecting a kit. Faction progression interacts directly with weapon access, since certain factions reward rare gun salvage through contracts and liaison systems that unlock simultaneously across all six factions.
