New Dota 2 Patch 7.39d Activity Quartero's Curios: Free Sets and a Chance to Get an Arcana

On the night of August 5 to 6, 2025, Valve released the latest Dota 2 patch 7.39d. While many players were expecting a new Battle Pass, the update brought something entirely unexpected — a new in-game character named Quortero. This charismatic goat now resides in the main menu and generously hands out free cosmetic items to players.
Quortero — The New “Host” of the Main Menu

Quortero, the goat, acts as a guide for a new in-game event. When launching Dota 2, he greets players with jokes and charm, but most importantly — with free gifts. Valve describes him as:
Meet Quortero — a not-at-all-tricky fellow who just wants to sit in your main menu and shower you with cosmetics as you play. The catch? There is no catch — it’s all free.
His dialogues are packed with humor and a strange kind of charisma. He calls his place a "roadside stand," offers sardines (not literally), and gifts players free items just because. Of course, he also hints at a “tragic backstory” that, according to the developers, he’s more than happy to share — in great detail.
Free Rewards from Quortero: What Can You Get?

Valve introduced a new progression system in Dota 2 that will run until November 5, 2025. Players earn XP simply by playing matches:
- 650 XP for a win
- 250 XP for a loss
- Turbo mode: 425 XP for a win, 175 XP for a loss
As players level up, they unlock various rewards and visual effects previously exclusive to the Battle Pass, such as teleport effects, healing at the fountain, and Radiance and Aghanim’s animations.
Main rewards include:
- Level 10 – Witch Doctor set
- Level 18 – Vengeful Spirit set
- Level 30 – Legion Commander set

Additionally, upon first logging in after the patch, players receive the Papa Wanga’s ward for Witch Doctor — completely free.
At levels 5, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100, players earn a "Quortero’s Rarity Capsule." Each capsule contains one of over 100 previously released cosmetic sets. With a bit of luck, it might even include an Immortal or Arcana item. Valve hasn’t disclosed the drop chances for rare items.
Progression Without a Battle Pass
What makes this new system stand out is the total lack of monetization. Unlike the traditional compendium or battle pass, these rewards are available to all players for free. All you have to do is play, level up, and collect cosmetic items. This approach seems to be Valve’s way of re-engaging the community in the absence of major in-game events, as seen in the broader changes introduced with the patch 7.39d notes that accompanied this update.
Not The Long-Awaited Battle Pass, But Still Nice
Patch 7.39d for Dota 2 turned out to be more than just a set of balance tweaks — it was a delightful surprise for the community. Instead of a Battle Pass, players got a humorous new character, a system of free rewards, and a good reason to return to the game. Quortero may be one of Valve’s most unusual and memorable in-game promotions to date. Still, it’s classic Valve — delivering everything except the Battle Pass that millions of players are waiting for.
That said, free rewards are always welcome. And who knows — maybe you’ll be one of the lucky few to walk away with a brand-new Arcana thanks to this unexpected event.
