How To Respec in Dune: Awakening and Dune: Awakening Progression Guide

In Dune Awakening, the specialization system is designed to give players maximum flexibility. You aren’t locked into a rigid path — instead, the game encourages experimentation and allows you to adapt your playstyle on the fly depending on the situation.

From the very beginning, you’ll need to choose your primary class, which stays with you throughout the game. However, even with this, you still have plenty of freedom: you can adjust your Talents and rebuild your setup depending on the challenges you face. The secondary class offers even more flexibility — you can redistribute skills almost at any time, selecting the abilities that are most relevant for your current needs.

In this guide, I’ll take a closer look and explain in detail how the respec system works in Dune Awakening, when you can change your build, and what limitations you need to keep in mind.

Can You Respec in Dune Awakening and Change Classes?

Yes, Dune: Awakening offers a respec system that allows players to adjust their build as their character progresses and gameplay priorities shift. This is one of the game’s strongest progression features — it provides enough flexibility to experiment with different tactics and playstyles without the need to create a new character.

If you find that your current build no longer fits your needs, you always have the option to modify it. Dune Awakening lets you redistribute skill points using the built-in "Respec Skill Tree" function available in the Talent menu. On PC, you can activate it by simply pressing the "R" key.

One of the most convenient aspects of the system is that, under normal conditions, respecs are almost unrestricted: you can respec at any time as long as your character is out of combat.

Respec Cooldown

This is a very important detail to keep in mind. After each respec, you’ll need to wait 48 real-time hours before you can reset your skills again. This restriction prevents players from changing builds too frequently and encourages more thoughtful decision-making when allocating skill points.

Class Switching and Combination

There are no strictly fixed classes in the game. At character creation, you select your starting class, which determines your initial active ability and unlocks the corresponding skill tree. However, as you progress, you can unlock additional classes by completing tasks for specific NPCs. This allows you to combine skills from different classes and create unique builds tailored to your personal playstyle. All skill upgrades and combinations are handled directly within the skill tree, making the process simple and convenient, without the need to constantly search for NPCs or navigate through complex menus.

For example, you may start as a Mentat, then unlock Swordmaster skills to boost your melee combat, or acquire Planetologist abilities to improve resource gathering and survival in the harsh conditions of Arrakis. This system allows you to adapt to a wide variety of challenges, whether it’s PvP combat or world exploration.

Class Selection and Combination Tips

Let’s quickly go through each class to give you a better idea of which direction might feel more comfortable and enjoyable for your playstyle.

  • Mentat: Highly mobile with strong ranged combat capabilities, making it ideal for scouting and stealth operations.
  • Bene Gesserit: Specializes in control and manipulation, offering unique abilities to manage fights and influence enemies.
  • Swordmaster: Focused on powerful melee combat, perfect for players who prefer a more aggressive playstyle.
  • Trooper: A versatile class with an emphasis on mid-range combat and explosives, making it a great option for beginners.
  • Planetologist: Focused on survival, resource gathering, and exploration, improving mobility and resilience in the harsh desert environment.

By combining skills from different classes, you can create a build that perfectly matches your personal preferences and the challenges you face in the game.

Is It Possible to Change Classes in Dune Awakening?

There isn’t a specific class change feature in the game because the system isn’t based on fixed roles but rather on flexible skill and discipline choices. Essentially, by switching between various abilities, you create your own specialization. For example, you can focus on Mentat or Swordmaster abilities as your secondary path, but at the same time, you’re free to combine skills from any of the available secondary classes to build a setup that best complements your primary class.

Can You Change Your Primary Class?

This is the only element that remains permanent. While you can respec talents within your primary class, the specialization you choose during character creation — for example, Trooper — is locked and cannot be changed later. So, make sure to take your time and carefully consider your choice before committing. The Early Game Is a Perfect Time for Experimentation

At the beginning of the game, you can freely experiment and find your own playstyle. Try different approaches — this will help you better understand what you truly enjoy. If you're having a hard time in combat, focus on boosting your damage and defense. If you want more control over the situation, invest in abilities that offer crowd control effects. Early on, there’s no need to stress over every decision — the time for fine-tuning and carefully optimizing your build will come later, during the mid and late stages of the game.
