Diablo 4 Paladin Overview - New Class Breakdown and Core Mechanics

The Paladin was introduced in Season 11 with a new patch, marking the return of a classic archetype well known to players since Diablo 2. Empowered by heavenly forces, this class combines Physical damage with Holy attacks, fights in heavy armor with a shield, and provides the party with a wide range of support and defensive tools. In this blog, we take a closer look at the Paladin and its core features.

New Diablo 4 Class Paladin Identity

The Paladin is primarily defined by the use of shields and abilities empowered by heavenly power. He relies on auras that enhance both himself and his allies and can fight either with a sword and shield or, alternatively, wield a two-handed weapon.

All Paladin abilities are tied to the Faith resource. It is generated through the use of Basic Skills and the Rally ability, and also regenerates slowly over time.

The class is divided into four schools based on the chosen Oath, the Paladin’s unique class mechanic:

  • Zealots embody a fanatical warrior, unleashing a relentless flurry of attacks on their enemies.
  • Juggernauts represent an immovable force, relying on heavy armor and raw physical power.
  • Judicators mark their foes and destroy them with holy damage.
  • Disciples ascend into an angelic form, significantly enhancing their abilities.

Let’s now take a brief look at the main strengths and weaknesses of the new Diablo 4 character, the Paladin.

Paladin Strengths and Weaknesses:

Strengths
Weaknesses
Very high mobility
Mostly melee-focused
Exceptional survivability
Heavy reliance on cooldowns
Strong support tools for allies
Limited build flexibility

Diablo 4 Paladin Attributes

Diablo 4 Paladin Overview - New Class Breakdown and Core Mechanics 1

The four core attributes provide the following benefits for the Paladin:

Strength: Skill Damage (12.5% per 100), Armor (20 per 100).

Intelligence: Critical Strike Chance (2% per 100), All Resistances (2% per 100).

Willpower: Resource Generation (3% per 100), Healing Received (3.5% per 100).

Dexterity: Dodge Chance (0.6% per 100).

Strength is the Paladin’s primary attribute, as it scales all damage dealt. Willpower and Intelligence are also valuable, offering both defensive and offensive bonuses, while Dexterity has minimal impact on the effectiveness of most Paladin builds. Certain items can roll attribute bonuses, and in the later stages of progression, Paragon boards allow you to deliberately stack the stats that best complement your chosen build.

Equipment

As a rule, the Paladin fights using a one-handed weapon paired with a shield, though in certain situations they can also wield two-handed weapons. In addition, the class has access to its own unique weapon type - flails, which are available exclusively as one-handed weapons.

Diablo 4 Paladin Skills & Passives

From a skill point distribution perspective, nothing has changed, but there are a few small clarifications regarding the skill tree. Skill points are unlocked as you level up and through the Season Rank system. The more points you invest, the more sections of the skill tree become available. Active skills can be upgraded up to 5 ranks or even higher through items, increasing their effectiveness (usually by +10% to the base value) or reducing their cooldown by 5% for each additional rank. After unlocking a skill, you can further enhance it with another point and then choose one of three upgrades to specialize it further.

In addition to active skills, the skill tree also contains passive abilities. They are tied to specific skill clusters and provide situational bonuses to damage, defense, or utility. Passives help fine-tune a build toward a specific playstyle. Each passive has 3 ranks and usually scales evenly.

What’s worth highlighting is that one of the Paladin’s strongest aspects, dating back to Diablo 2, has always been its passive abilities.

Key Passives

What I want to highlight is one of the Paladin’s biggest strengths since Diablo 2 - its passive abilities.

There will be 4 Key Passives in total, and your builds will revolve around them. You can only choose one Key Passive, so make this decision carefully.

Coat of Arms scales your damage based on Armor and Block Chance. Your damage is increased by 75% of your Armor Percent and 50% of your Block Chance.

Path of the Penitent allows Zealot skills to ramp you into a frenzy. Your Zealot Skills cost 100% more Faith, but casting them grants all Skills 6% Resource Cost Reduction and 10% increased damage for 4 seconds, stacking up to 10 times.

Exaltation buffs you while transformed into Arbiter. During Arbiter your damage is increased by 85% and Wing Strikes strike 1 additional time.

Judgement Day creates Judgement chain reactions between targets. Consuming Judgement increases your damage by 6% for 5 seconds, up to 90%. Judgement now spreads to nearby targets without Judgement when it detonates.

Ultimate Skills

Ultimate abilities are the most powerful skills with long cooldowns. The player can choose only one of them, and it has a single rank with a simple two-step upgrade path that offers no alternative progression options.

  • Triplicate - heaven’s fury splits into 3 beams, dealing 36% x damage each hit for 7 seconds.

Fortress - juggernaut-themed, creates a fighting arena around you, protecting you from enemy attacks. Cooldown: 60 seconds. Make your stand, becoming Immune for 3.0 seconds and create a defensive area around you for 8.0 seconds. Standing in your Fortress grants you and your allies 2 Resolve stacks every 0.5 seconds.

  • Enhanced Fortress - while inside of your Fortress your Skills are free to Cast and you gain 4.0% damage per stack of Resolve.
  • Rampart of Thorns - enemies inside Fortress are Slowed by 50% and take 500% of your Thorns damage per second.

  • Empyrean Edge - zenith becomes a Mobility Skill, dashes to enemies, Weakens them, grants 25% Critical Strike Chance, and killing Weakened enemies with either Zenith strike reduces its cooldown by 2 seconds.

Arbiter of Justice - disciple-themed, transforms into Arbiter and enhances your skills for a time. Cooldown: 120 seconds | Lucky Hit Chance: 16% | Ascend to the heavens and crash onto the battlefield as an Arbiter for 20 seconds, dealing 600% x damage upon landing.

  • Reach of the Law - arbiter’s Wing Strikes now apply Judgement to enemies.
  • Seraph's Wings - while in Arbiter form, you gain 0% Movement Speed, Wing Strikes deal 200% increased damage, and nearby enemies become Vulnerable.
  • Divine Intervention - arbiter of Justice ascends for an additional 2 seconds, rains Blessed Spears on the battlefield, and upon landing bombards the area with 10 extra Blessed Spears, making enemies Vulnerable for 4 seconds.

Ultimate Passives:

Diablo 4 Paladin Overview - New Class Breakdown and Core Mechanics 3

The Paladin’s core mechanics are built around several gameplay effects, some of which are unique to this class and directly impact the effectiveness of its builds.

  • Resolve is tied to the Juggernaut path. It reduces incoming damage and can trigger additional buffs.
  • Judgement is associated with Judicator abilities and marks enemies, causing the mark to detonate and deal damage.
  • Arbiter is linked to Disciple skills and allows the character to assume an angelic form, significantly enhancing their abilities.
  • Fervor is characteristic of Zealot skills. This effect stacks over time and turns attacks into multi-hit strikes.
  • Retribution triggers Thorns explosions around the character and is activated by specific skills and passives.
  • Weaken debuffs enemies by reducing their damage and enabling conditions for other bonuses to activate.

At the moment, I see many similarities with the Paladin from Diablo 2, but at the same time there are elements that feel very different and genuinely exciting to try out. You can find a more detailed breakdown of the new DLC and the upcoming season in our blog, The Game Awards 2025: Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred - New DLC. In that article, we reviewed everything the developers shared at The Game Awards and briefly summarized what awaits players in the coming year.

Unique Class Mechanic - Oaths

Oaths are the unique class mechanic of the Paladin in Diablo 4. Starting at level 15, you gain the ability to choose one of four Oaths, allowing you to further specialize your build.

In most cases, specific skills and gameplay synergies already naturally align with a particular Oath. Because of this, Oaths tend to enhance and reinforce your chosen playstyle rather than define a build from scratch, as their effects are usually focused on supporting a specific Paladin archetype.

Summary of the New Diablo 4 Character: Paladin

The Paladin is one of the most iconic and time-tested classes, familiar to players since the days of Diablo 2. Most builds revolve around Auras that enhance both the character and their allies. Shields are often used not only to improve survivability, but also as part of the Paladin’s offensive toolkit. Each build concept is directly tied to the chosen Oath and represents one of four archetypes: Zealot, Juggernaut, Judicator, or Disciple.

My very first playthrough of Diablo 2 was with a Paladin, and I remember how disappointed I was when this class was missing from later installments. Now the developers have finally listened to the fans and brought this character back, which feels like a long-awaited return.
