Esports news Top Esports
In brief:
TOP Esports is a Chinese titled club founded in 2017 based on its League of Legends roster. First of all, it is famous for its LoL roster and, also, has squads in PUBG Mobile, Arena of Valor, and other disciplines.
TOP Esports appeared in the esports environment in 2017. The club was founded by a company that produces sports clothes called Topsports.
The foundation for the club was a League of Legends roster. It started functioning on December 21, 2017.
The first results in League of Legends
Created in December 2017, the club received a slot in a local league, having bought it from the team DAN Gaming. Demacia Championship 2017 was a debut championship for TOP Esports.
The big Chinese event beyond the LPL ecosystem was a full failure for TOP Esports. The team reached the top 15, having lost to the team Suning in the third round of the group stage.
At the moment, the roster of TOP Esports included such little-known Chinese players as Lies, xx, QiuQiu, Cat, and the South Korean legionnaire, Gnoong. The performance at the debut tournament predictably led to roster changes.
In 2018, the team started playing in the titled league LPL. The roster of TOP Esports included 12 players for the first split of the year, LPL Spring 2018, and their number was reduced to 7 in the summer.
Such in-team chaos led to unsatisfying results. TOP Esports placed 13th-14th at LPL Spring 2018 and 6th in the summer.
The slow progress allowed TOP Esports to catch up with their colleagues at NEST 2018 and Demacia Cup Winter 2018. At the last one, The top laner 369 made his debut, he will be associated with the club in the future.
The 2019 and 2020 seasons – the rise on top of the Chinese League of Legends
Having finished 2018 on a major note, TOP Esports had a more rational approach to playing LPL Spring 2019. The roster had 5 players who represented TOP Esports regularly: 369, Xx, Knight9, LokeN, and Ben.
The reshuffle was made before the start of 2019 and the new competitive season was successful. TOP Esports reached the top 3 in the group stage of LPL Spring 2019, having lost to Invictus Gaming a slot in the top two strongest teams with a difference in two lost maps.
Having proceeded to its first LPL playoffs, TOP Esports played against SinoDragon Club (3-0) and then lost to IG in the match for qualifying for the grand final.
On the outcome of the spring split, TOP Esports held the top 3, having prevailed in the match for the third place. LPL Summer was remembered for an almost identical result.
At the beginning of the tournament, TOP held the top 2 in the group stage, after which they moved to the playoffs. The opponent of TOP in their first match of the main stage was the almighty Royal Never Give Up.
The strongly reinforced TOP Esports lost to RNG in the playoff semi-finals. The victory over Bilibili Gaming in the third-place match with a score of 3-0 helped to soothe the bitterness of defeat a bit.
Having worked on all mistakes, TOP Esports entered the new season with an updated roster. 369 and Knight remained from the previous five and the roster was completed by Karsa, photic, and yuyanjia.
TOP Esports managed to overcome their past results at the first event of the season, LPL Spring 2020. The team finished 4th in the group stage, having won a tiebreaker against eStar Gaming, and passed two playoff rounds after that, having stopped in the grand final and lost to JD Gaming with a score of 2-3.
The 2nd place at LPL Spring 2020 allowed TOP Esports to qualify for Mid-Season Cup 2020 where TOP Esports shined bright. Initially, the team placed 2nd in their group and advanced to the playoffs later where it defeated Gen.G and FunPlus Phoenix, having lost only 1 map out of 7.
After the end of the Mid-Season Cup, TOP Esports returned to matches of the regular LPL season. The summer split brought the team the first big victory in the Chinese division.
In the grand final of LPL Summer 2020, TOP Esports avenged JD Gaming. TOP took revenge for the three-month defeat, having beaten JD with a score of 3-2.
Having become the champions of the summer split, TOP Esports deserved a slot in the world championship. The team played at the tournament in the Worlds series for the first time since its foundation in 2017.
The debut championship was not bad for 369 and his teammates but it was not perfect either. Having won Group D without special difficulties, TES advanced to the playoffs where they outplayed Fnatic (3-2) in the first round but lost to Suning (1-3) in the semi-final.
The home championship was over for TES with the 3rd-4th place in the standings and the year was over with a victory at Demacia Cup 2020.
The 2021-2022 season: the decline of TES
2020, which was filled with significant results, raised the quality level for TOP Esports. They entered the new competitive season with one replacement: yuyanjia was replaced by Zhuo.
The replacement was local but it influenced the team’s performance. That year, the team held the top 4 at LPL Spring 2021 and worsened the result by half later, having finished in the top 8 at LPL Summer 2021.
The jungler Karsa was replaced by Tian in the 2022 season. The 2019 world champion brought fresh ideas to the team and TES returned on top of the Chinese League of Legends again: the team managed to place 2nd in the regular split twice, having earned a slot in Worlds 2022.
The second tournament in the Worlds series in the club’s history finished way worse than two years before. TOP Esports failed to pass the group stage, despite being distributed into a playable group where their opponents were Rogue, GAM, and DRX.
Worlds 2022 was over for TES at the very beginning. The team held the top 10, after which started reshuffling: only Tian and JackeyLove stayed in the team and they were accompanied by Qingtian, Wayward, Rookie, and Mark.
How much Top Esports earned
The League of Legends division of TOP Esports played in 24 tournaments. The revenue of the team amounted to ~1,451,000 dollars of prize money for these tournaments. It is 60% of the overall sum of prizes.
