In brief:

Cloud9 is one of the most famous media multigamings in North America and beyond. The rosters of C9 are represented in many esports disciplines, including Dota 2, CSGO, League of Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Overwatch, and others.

We offer to take a closer look at the CSGO branch in this text.

The first appearance

Cloud9 appeared on the CSGO scene for the first time in summer 2014. Then, the organization signed the former players of Complexity:

  • Hiko
  • n0thing
  • SEMPHIS
  • sgares
  • shroud

The performance at ESL One: Cologne 2014 was the first challenge for the recently-created team. The team held the 5th-8th place there, which, however, can be called a pretty good result.

The first results

Besides the performance at ESL One: Cologne 2014, C9 proved itself at a couple more tournaments in the first year of its operation.

The team held the 2nd place at CEVO Season 5 Professional, the 1st place at GXL Universe 2014 CS:GO, the 5th-6th place at FACEIT League – Season 2, the 9th-12th place at DreamHack Winter 2015, and the 5th-6th place at ESEA Season 17 – Global Invite Division.

C9 replaced Hiko with ShahZaM at the end of the year.

C9 continued participating in various championships in the next season. Cloud9 placed 7th-8th at MLG X games Aspen Invitational, 2nd at Сlutch Con 2015, and 9th-12th at its third Major tournament ESL One: Katowice 2015.

Later, the team held the 4th place at Gfinity Masters 1 and the 7th-8th place initially at ESEA Season 18 – Global Invite Division and then at Gfinity Spring Masters 2.

The last performances led to changes inside the roster: ShahZam and SEMPHIS left the team and their spots were taken by Skadoodle and fREAKAZOiD. Cloud9 got into shape quickly with this roster and began dominating the American scene, demonstrating good results at international tournaments.

С9 became the champions of HTC Reborn Invitational, ESL ESEA Pro League Season 1 – North America, held the 2nd place at ESL ESEA Pro League Season 1 – Finals, the 2nd place at Electronic Sports World Cup 2015 and FACEIT 2015 Stage 2 Finals. The team finished 3rd-4th at CEVO Season 7 Professional a bit later.

The series of positive results was over with the performance at ESL One: Cologne 2015 where C9 held the 9th-12th place. That year, C9 tried to prove itself again at the Major tournament and missed it again. Cloud9 finished 9th-12th at DreamHack Open Cluj-Napoca 2015

The searches for an optimal roster and the dawn of Cloud9

The upcoming few years provided C9 with not the most stable results. The team proved it well at local championships and also created the struggle at international competitions, however, the luck was not on C9’s side at the main competitions. It happened at MLG Major Championship: Columbus 2016. The situation repeated at PGL Krakow 2017 later.

Cloud9 was looking for an optimal roster in 2016-2017. In 2016, they signed the young prospect Stewie2K. That year, fREAKAZOiD left the team and C9 signed another prospective player, automatic later.

Two legends of the North American professional scene became inactive in 2017: Shroud and n0thing stopped being active players and their slots were taken by RUSH and tarik.

During this period, C9 managed to win a few important tournaments. It definitely was ESL Pro League Season 4 – Finals and Americas Minor Championship – Krakow 2017. The second one gave a big boost to C9.

Also, the list of achievements in 2017 included the 3rd-4th place at Esports Championship Series Season 3 – Finals, the 2nd place at ESL One: Cologne 2017, the 3rd-4th place at ELEAGUE CS:GO Premier 2017, and the first places at DreamHack Open Denver 2017 and iBUYPOWER 2017.

The updated roster obviously demonstrated its best sides but the main achievement was just ahead.

The world championship and the rapid decline

C9 made the historical event in January 2018: the team achieved victory at ELEAGUE Major: Boston 2018, having defeated FaZe Clan in the final and become the first North American team to win the Major championship. However, Cloud9’s triumph was not long.

The team placed 2nd at WESG 2017 North American Finals and cs_summit 2 in February but the rapid decline started after that.

The team held the 9th-11th place at StarLadder & i-League StarSeries Season 4, after which the period of big reshuffles began.

Skadoodle was the first one to leave. Then, Stewie2K left the team after him. FNS arrived in the team and STYKO joined on a trial period a bit later. Golden, flusha, and KioShiMa came in the team later.

Definitely, such reshuffles were followed by devastative results. Cloud9 very quickly lost its shape after the victory at the Major at the beginning of the year. The 4th place at ESL Pro League Season 7 – North America and the 2nd place at Esports Championship Series Season 5 – North America was the best result after Boston. Also, there was the 9th-12th place at ESL Pro League Season 7 – Finals and ESL One: Cologne 2018. The peak was the performance at FACEIT Major: London 2018 where the reigning champions finished their performance 12th-14th.

2019-2020 or the vortex of reshuffles and futile attempts to return the past greatness

2019 was even more insane in terms of reshuffles.

Flusha left the team at the beginning of the year, cajunb joined the squad later. After that, Golden parted ways with C9. C9 changed its roster radically in the middle of the year. The new five looked in the following way:

  • daps
  • koosta
  • TenZ
  • Mixwell
  • JamezIRL

However, C9 was destined to play with this roster till autumn 2019. TenZ departed from the team in October and the rest of the players were replaced later.

Once again, Cloud9 demonstrated no results in 2019: the 9th-11th place at Intel Extreme Masters XIII – Katowice Major 2019, the 13th-16th place at DreamHack Masters Dallas 2019, the 9th-12th place at ESL Pro League Season 9 – Finals, the 13th-16th place at ESL Pro League Season 10 – Americas.

2020 was started with the updated roster. The team included JT, motm, oSee, floppy, sonic. With this roster, the five was playing till September but the renewed roster did not help. So C9 returned to the casual business of the past years – reshuffles

HenryG joined the team in September, he held the position of the main coach and had to assemble the roster from nothing. HenryG began with Alex who moved from team Vitality and became the key player of C9, having held the slot of an in-game leader. Later, the player was joined by floppy, mezii, es3tag, and Xeppa.

It is difficult to say that the regular changes helped the roster but Cloud9 entered the top 4 a couple of times in 2020, despite these tournaments being not that big.

The organization and rewards

Jacques Etienne who holds the position of the CEO and also his brother Paullie Etienne are the founders of the organization.

HenryG and Tiffany Chiu are the managers of the roster. Alex is a captain of the CSGO squad and coaching positions are taken by Elmapuddy and m1cks.

C9 cooperates with a row of big brands, including PUMA, Red Bull, Twitch, OMEN by HP, HyperX, Secretlab, AT&T, Microsoft, EPOS Audio

Since its foundation, the CSGO branch has already earned more than 2,460,000 dollars of prize money for the organization.
