The game is presented in the genre of an arcade racing game, where players, driving cars, play football.
The game was released in 2015 on Windows and PlayStation 4 platforms. Later, the project made its way to other current platforms as well. Major eSports organisations have been quick to assemble teams in this discipline. Below we give an overview of the cybersport component of the project.
Appearance of the first Rocket League tournaments
In the game the matches are held in a format of confrontation between two teams, which initially hinted at the cybersport potential of the project. Cybersport tournaments have been running since 2015.
The first major Rocket League championship was the Major League Gaming Pro League - Season 1, organised by MLG with a prize pool of $2,500. The winning team was FlipSid3 Tactics.
Rocket League tournaments of all kinds
Rocket League tournaments range from the smallest in-game tournaments to the biggest World Championships on LAN.
There are over 10 different types of Rocket League tournaments:
- School Leagues
- Mixed championships
- Qualifying tournaments
- Show matches
- Weekly tournaments
- Monthly tournaments
- Intra-game tournaments
- D-type tournaments
- C-tier tournaments
- B-tyre tournaments
- A-tyre tournaments
- S-tyre tournaments
- Majors
- World Championships
The classification is built around the size of the prize pool for which teams battle it out in tournaments. All pre-D-type tournaments have virtually no prize money and are played on enthusiasm or for token prizes such as game peripherals, accessories and other rewards. D-type tournaments start at $1,000 and at last year's Rocket League Championship Series 2021-22 - World Championship 24 teams competed for $2,085,000 in prize money. Team BDS earned an impressive $600,000 to win the year's main event.
RLCS - Rocket League Championship Series
The Rocket League Championship Series, or RLCS for short, is the premier Rocket League tournament series for professional teams. The RLCS has been running since 2016. In total, the RLCS schedule is divided into 3 splits, held in regions such as Europe, North America, Oceania, South America, Middle East and North Africa, Pacific North Region, Pacific South Region and Tropical Africa. There are 3 regional events in each region to qualify for the Major, the final split. The main event of the season is the Rocket League Championship Series 2022-23 - World Championship.
