The preview of ESL One Katowice 2019

12 famous teams will meet in Poland on February 19 to determine a champion and an owner of the main monetary prize in the sum of $125,000 and we will tell about recent results of teams and their chances to win the competition.

The format

The competition is not a part of the rating system by Valve, so the organizers have invited eight teams directly and four more rosters have passed a qualification in Europe, North America, China, and Southeast Asia. All participants have been divided into two groups where they will play bo2 matches by a Round Robin system and you can find out the distribution below:

Team Secret
Gambit eSports
Forward Gaming
Team Aster

On the outcome of the group stage, two worst teams of each group will be eliminated from the competition and the rest of the participants will continue participating in the playoff stage with a Double Elimination bracket. All playoff matches will be hosted in a bo3 format and only the grand final will be played in a bo5 format.

The organization of the championship

The company ESL organizes the championship ESL One Katowice 2019 and their competitions have always stood out with its good atmosphere, an absence of delays on broadcasts and players’ positive feedbacks. Each professional esportsmen would not mind visiting ESL One and a pleasant bonus for players is motivation from ESL partners, the company “Mercedes-Benz”, which gives a new car to the best player of the competition.

The importance of the championship

The competition is not part of the rating system, so the championship can’t be called very important for professional teams, which is reflected by the list of participants.

The prize pool

The organizers have revealed the prize pool in the sum of $300,000, however, rating Dota Pro Circuit points will not be up for grabs due to the championship hasn’t received a “Minor” status from Valve. A check for a new car by the Mercedes-Benz company, which is an ESL partner, can be added to the monetary reward.

The distribution of the prize pool:

The teams’ chances:

Team Secret — the odds on a victory: 1,7

The guys from Team Secret come to the competition as the main favorite because Puppey and the company have been demonstrating a stable and confident play since a reshuffle in September. The team took part in two Majors in the whole rating season. The team made it to the grand final at the first one and the guys became champions at The Chongqing Major 2019. At the moment, the team is the strongest among all participants and can lose only to themselves.

Fnatic — the odds on a victory: 6,7

The team headed by Jabz is considered to be the best in Southeast Asia for a reason, which they prove at various qualifiers to rating tournaments over and over again. Since the moment of creation, the team has already earned about $140,000, having entered the top eight at Major tournaments twice. The roster has come to the championship without stand-ins, so it will have to show its best play.

NiP — the odds on a victory: 7.5

The preview of ESL One Katowice 2019. Photo 3

NiP plays on a professional scene with an unstable success. They performed nicely at The Kuala Lumpur Major at the beginning of the year, having placed fourth. At The Bucharest Minor, the roster also held the fourth place but it can be considered to be a failure for the team like NiP. Now, the guys show a pretty strong play and have even placed first at the qualifiers to DreamLeague Season 11, having overcome such serious opponents as Team Secret, Team Liquid, and OG. PPD and the company might hold a good place, however, despite their will, Secret will not allow them to become champions if they want to.

Gambit Esports — the odds on a victory: 11.3

The team Gambit Esports is in a good shape and might perform well at the competition but it’s not worth for the guys to hope for a victory because they are far from Team Secret’s level. In 2019, the team managed to place second at The Bucharest Minor and NiP was defeated in the grand final of WePlay! Dota 2 Valentine Madness a couple of days ago by Daxak and the company. If the guys continue playing in the same way, they will have to reach the top six.

OG — the odds on a victory: 12.5

The reigning champions of The International 2019 have been unable to find their own play for a long time because they have already replaced two carries since the victory at the main competition of the year. Now, OG plays with iLTW and it’s pretty difficult to call their performance a good one because the team’s only achievement is an advancement to StarLadder ImbaTV Dota 2 Minor. Despite bookmakers believe in Topson and the company, there is a row of more interesting teams at the competition.

Chaos — the odds on a victory: 17

The guys from Chaos are strong enough but play with an unstable success due to unknown reasons. They can beat the strongest rosters, including Team Secret, but something went wrong at The Chongqing Major 2019 and the team placed only 9th-12th. After the Major, W33 and the company took part only in qualifiers to DreamLeague Season 11, which won without a special problem. As a result, the Brazilians might pass the group stage of ESL One Katowice 2019 but they are unlikely to make it to the upper bracket.

Alliance — the odds on a victory: 19

The guys from Alliance have recently started playing way worse and placed only 13th-16th at the previous Major tournament, after which were not able to make it to DreamLeague Season 11 and StarLadder ImbaTV Dota 2 Minor. The only Loda players’ achievements are the second place at LOOT.BET Winter Masters and the fourth place at WePlay! Dota 2 Valentine Madness, however, this is a bad consolation for the team, which strives to play at the Major.

Forward Gaming — the odds on a victory: 19.3

Forward Gaming was created in September 2018 and managed to enter the top six only at MegaFon Winter Clash during this time, however, there were only six participants there. The roster hasn’t learned how to play with UNiVeRsE and the team’s playing style still looks like 4+1. This tournament will probably not become an exception for the team and they will be able to enter the top four only if their opponents have a careless attitude to the competition.

Team Aster — the odds on a victory: 23.8

The preview of ESL One Katowice 2019. Photo 9

The roster is going through a really tough time because the roster has failed The Chongqing Major where held the last place. After this, loveyouloveme and the company haven’t made it both to DreamLeague Season 11 and the Minor tournament and Aster has won only two maps at the qualifiers. At the moment, the perspective is not very bright, so we would not even put them in the top eight.

Mineski — the odds on a victory: 29

The preview of ESL One Katowice 2019. Photo 10

The roster of the organization Mineski looked pretty well in Southeast Asia and they managed to win AMD Dota 2 Pro Series 2018 and DreamHack Mumbai Invitational 2018 in December. Despite good online results, the team has lost matches with Fnatic and TnC Predator for a spot at tournaments with Dota Pro Circuit points from Valve. At the end of January this year, Ahijt joined the team who reinforced the team obviously because the guys made it to DreamLeague Season 11. We do not fully agree with bookmakers who consider this team to be an obvious underdog and think that they will be “a dark horse”, which will surprise us all.

compLexity Gaming and For The Dream — the odds on a victory: 38.5

The preview of ESL One Katowice 2019. Photo 11

Despite compLexity Gaming and For The Dream represent different regions, their gaming level is almost equal, which is reflected by the bookmakers’ odds. And if the Chinese roster is just a weak team, compLexity consists of famous enough and strong players, however, they haven’t managed to create a team play. We think that these teams will not pass the group stage but compLexity might prepare and show some good matches.
